This was the first performance of GAUNG, a progressive-psychedelia instrumental band formed by Rama Saputra, a former Under My Pillow and a current Fa'al bass player. He was asking me to join him not long before this first appearance of GAUNG. Maulana Fariduddin then came along as the drummer.

Credits was given to Atika Syahirna for her effort to record a video of this long performance before I converted it into an audio piece. I really don't think that this performance was the best one but I think it was quite historical.

Bin Idris, the wanderer of the unconscious world through sound. Bin Idris is Haikal Azizi's true and deepest persona as a musician. Note that he is also the frontman of a psychedelic rock band, Sigmun. This recording showed his strong ability to bring the exploration of his unconscious mind into a long piece of atmospheric composition through his acoustic guitar.

I've been friends with him since 2007 and he's quite influential to my guitar playing. We even formed a band called LOUD in 2008, but unfortunately I quit the band in 2010 due to some reasons. LOUD changed their name to Sigmun circa 2011. Now, you probably already witnessed how Sigmun and Bin Idris start to conquer the Indonesian so called independent music scene. Well, I can say that he's one hell of a genius in music. Have a listen.

This is my last performance with GAUNG, a progpsych trio band. After 2 years working with Rama Saputra, a multi-instrumentalist musician, I finally decided to focus on my project, KAITZR, along with, also a former GAUNG member, the drummer, Iman Firman aka Imanmord.

Credits was given to Ami, Imanmord gf, as she was the one who operate my portable recorder to record this performance, Rajin Sihombing, my partner guitarist at KAITZR, for helping me while I setting up the sound, and also Roi-radio.com for the review and documentation.

Salon Vol. 1: A Conversation in New Music Teaser

Haikal Azizi also known by the pseudonym Bin Idris is a musician whose musical roots encompassing delta blues, blues rock, and psychedelic rock. In addition to his interest in esoteric music, he also explores echo, reverb, loop, and delay modulations through his acoustic guitar. Subconscious elements that support his musical improvisation activity then becomes one of Bin Idris’ musical work characteristics. His interaction with guitar layers slightly resembles the impression from a German guitarist and composer, Manuel Gottsching, known for his work in Ash Ra Tempel and Ashra. The repetition characteristic presented by Bin Idris can also be perceived as a mix between Minimal Music in the academic music and Krautrock in the popular music. Although at first glance his musical tendencies are in the same realm, in this case the Repetition Music or Minimal Music, Bin Idris is the antithesis of Erik Satie who is often referred to as phonometrician (one that measures the sound).

Duto Hardono is a visual artist who frequently uses installation as well as readymade objects such as tapes and vinyl records or LPs as the medium in his works. Among the three artists involved in Salon Volume 1, the influence of John Cage seems to be most pronounced in Duto Hardono’s work. As with Riar Rizaldi, Duto also has a considerable interest in noise music, and in this performances, he will offer a sensastion from what is called musique concrete. Realizing his interest towards readymade objects in the realm of visual art, no wonder if he then seems to unite Marcel Duchamp with Pierre Henry or Francis Dhomont through musique concrete which in some ways has a similar characteristic to the readymade object compositions (musique concrete is an experimental musical composition technique using sound-recorded as the material object).

Salon Vol.1: Duto Hardono

Riar Rizaldi is both a visual artist and a filmmaker who utilizes his admiration towards the audio and visual technology as well as their attachments toward each other to then be used as the inspiration or the drive for making an artwork. Rizaldi who is also a noise musician then utilizes his interest in overhauling analogue instruments or objects to make ‘disturbing’ sound. The tendency of ‘disturbing’ sound or noise generated by analogue object manipulations at least described what is aspired by a futurist named Luigi Russolo in his 1913 manifesto entitled The Art of Noises. In addition to his idea about noise as one big part of what makes a culture develop, Russolo is also known for his noise maker machine called intonarumori. Other names such as Nam June Paik and Ryoji Ikeda also appear to be a strong influences in Riar Rizaldi Salon Vol. 1 performances.
