Once upon a time, a friend told me musicians write self-deprecating songs in order to get ahead of the haters and stifle their constant search to criticize someone using an artistic platform.

Well... I don't want to do that. Instead, I took that idea and turned it around and wrote a song about the things I like about myself. That only got me the verses though. It wasn't until the tragedy of a friend's death that I realized that I'm not the only one in need of self-love. So many of us give with full hearts and take care of others, and many times, we forget to care for ourselves. This song is dedicated to those who care enough to give and will hopefully inspire to turn that giving nature inwards as well.

Self-Love

I got the idea for this song by watching Brene Brown's Netflix Special The Call to Courage. Brene says some brilliant and inspiring things about vulnerability, and as one who has lived most of his adult life on stage, I listen to her and feel seen. She says living vulnerably is living life "in the arena" and she advises to not give anybody who has opinions that isn't living life in the arena any weight at all. She calls these people the "cheap seats". So this one goes out to you Brene, and to all living life in the arena of vulnerability!!

A friend and I set out to write a song from scratch one night and after seemingly solving ALL the world's problems through deep conversation, we started ranting about how people don't have these deep conversations enough. Then it hit me: why spend energy on those not having these conversations and why not write a song about those that do. So this song is for those who talk to each other about deep shit, even if it's just for fun. Cheers to you friends!!

I wrote this about a specific someone a while back that is off doing bigger and better things, but I continue to love this song because I feel like this song represents those who are attracted to qualities in a person that isn't just on the surface, like a solid sense of humor or absolutely owning a skillset. Physical attraction is something, but a hilarious somebody that can ball at they craft... (fans hisself)... yes please.

Number One Reason

Bob Linebarger is an all-around professional performing artist, having spent most his adult life pursuing an acting career in KC. He also runs a non-profit called Rising Tide Productions, dedicated to using art to create and spread more empathy into the world. Bob's main passion, though, is singing for people, so he is taking his empathy mission and building another label onto his career: musician. Might as well just call it exactly what I am when playing music then: Bob the Musician. The practicality of the name matches the practicality of the deep message I want to bring through my music, so, to me, it's perfect.
