Home Sweet Burrow (Full Of Acorns)

"The Spark," written for the Climate Music Project concert at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, is about the 2018 Camp Fire, the most deadly and destructive fire in California history.  The fire was caused by several factors, including a very wet rainy season followed by a prolonged drought.  This is represented in the piece by the drops of water in the background, each of which represents a day with rain.  This, along with high winds, created the perfect conditions for disaster, one that was finally triggered by a faulty BG&E transmission line.  The fire covered an area of over 150,000 acres destroying more than 18,000 structures and killing 85 people.  While this disaster was sparked by potentially illegal negligence on the part of BG&E, the effects of man-made greenhouse gasses and global warming led to the conditions that make fires like this one more likely to start and spread.

The Spark

Total Control is Vexx's theme for the imaginary video game Parallel.  It was written for SFCM's 2020-21 Sony Collaboration Project and was recorded at Castle Studios in Nashville in January of 2021.

QSC "Now You Hear Us" - Rescore

A New Reality is my version of the main theme for the imaginary video game Parallel. It was written for SFCM's 2020-21 Sony Collaboration Project and was recorded at Castle Studios in Nashville in May of 2021.

Even more so than last time, everybody's work from this round absolutely blew me away. It was a massive honor to work with so many amazing people in bringing all of our music to life! Sadly, the compilation album isn't out yet, but I'll link it here when it releases (probably later this year).

Episode 2 - Paprika

Happy holidays from The Spicecast! Reuben is joined by special guests Benjamin and Andrew to talk about many types and species of cinnamon. The episode goes into cinnamon production and history, describes some medicinal uses for cinnamon, includes a cinnamon tasting, and ends with a few cinnamon references in pop culture.

Correction: During the tasting, Korintje is referred to as another name for Saigon cinnamon, but it is actually Indonesian cinnamon. We apologize for the mistake and confusion.

Episode 5 - Black Pepper

Reuben is joined by special guests Stephen and Natasha in an unusual episode of The Spicecast, one not focused on a particular spice. This is because, due to COVID-19, the speakers could not all be in the same place during the episode, and so could not taste spices and foods together.

The episode talks about The Spice from the Dune Series, gives a hypothesis on whether coffee is a spice (and whether a cappuccino is a milkshake), assigns spices to The Spice Girls based on their names, includes a brief rendition of Jingle Bells played with partially full spice jars, and goes into a number of other topics in an unstructured manner.

We hope to be back sometime in the near future with more of our regularly scheduled content.

Episode 8 - Turmeric

Black lives matter, now and always. Since long before the murder of George Floyd late last month, black people in the United States have been systemically marginalized, oppressed, and killed by white people in positions of power. The act of murder that was committed by police officers in Minneapolis on May 25th, 2020 is the direct result of the white supremacy that continues to pervade our government, society, and country as a whole. The insane lack of accountability that police officers have for their violent actions is part of the system we must fight to change, as are so many other institutions that discriminate against people for the color of their skin. We stand with all those who protest police brutality and other injustices, who risk their lives even during the worst pandemic the world has seen in a century. We stand also with the victims of violence, prejudice, and oppression--those whose names are known, and the many whose names will never be known because of the same system that sought to bring them down in the first place. No justice, no peace.

In an interview-style episode, Reuben is joined by special guest Francine to talk about Jamaican spices, seasonings, and cooking. The conversation ranges from the meaning of spice and seasoning in our lives to common and lesser-known Jamaican spices and dishes.

Episode 9 - Jamaican Spices

"Live your dreams, eat your garlic" - Ancient proverb

Reuben is joined by special guests Layne and Sophie to talk about garlic. Though garlic is technically a vegetable, it is commonly used like a spice, so The Spicecast is covering it in this episode.

The episode begins by discussing what garlic is and the many types of garlic that are grown worldwide, then ventures into common culinary uses for garlic and the history of garlic. The second half of the show features traditional and modern medicinal uses for garlic as well as the various and sundry appearances of garlic in pop culture.
