This is a warmup loopy jam recorded at Bird & Egg Studio with my friend Cody Rhodes on drums. I was playing a Fender Bass VI. Cole Williams engineered.

Bird & Egg Jam

This tune was a super fun exercise in DAW-less looping. Cole had been wanting to make a tape loop by physically cutting and splicing together 2 bars of a drumbeat I performed. After he made the loop, I added guitars, bass, and synths. Cole even synced up a drum machine with the loop, which took a few attempts to get locked in due to time phasing.

After we filled up 8 tracks, Cole did a console mix by adjusting the faders in real time and doing delay throws to the SpaceEcho. He also changed the tape speed midway thru.  Pretty cool analog nerd stuff :)

The only time it touched the computer was for mastering.

DAW-less Tape Loop

This started as a "production study" in which Cole and I tried to match the drums, congas, guitars and bass to the original song as best we could. Then it ended up turning into a Toro y Moi inspired dreamy textured synth landscape. I really like how the piano turned out. Cole used Ableton's stretch tool to make the tails all glitched out. Note the well-timed Juul hit at 1:01 that serves as a nice wash of white noise ;)

Running Away -  Roy Ayers

This one's hot off the presses. I'm out of town with a mini setup right now (laptop, Akai MPK mini, and a SSD with my audio library). This one was a fun challenge because I couldn't track any actual instruments and I was working against a self-imposed deadline. The only elements that aren't my own homemade samples are the Kick and Snare one-shots and a couple instances of the TAL-U-No-LX soft synth.

You Will Live To Write Another Song

In April of last year Cole and I found a box of free records on the sidewalk in West Berkeley. There were some gems but most of them looked weird as hell and in bad condition. I remember there was a really creepy record that consisted only of tongue twisters, “Chopin for Kids”, and the CSUMB Class of 1976 Jazz Ensemble, which was actually pretty good. 

We took the records home and used them for a sound design session, playing them at various speeds into a rather involved effects chain which included the filter of a Korg MS20, a vocoder, Roland Space Echo, and various pedals. 

Today I rediscovered the audio from this session and cut it down from 3 hours to a more reasonable 30 minutes.
