Song Of The Machine

Modulate Octophonic Loop System, is an 8.1 sound installation, first created for exhibition in May 2011 at SONM, a new sound art centre in Murcia, Spain, directed by Francisco Lopez.
Controlled via Max/MSP, the 8 speakers (plus subwoofer) are placed
in a semi circle/crescent. Custom software chooses multiple sound files in random order, overlaying &amp; panning/diffusing them through the system, each sound has it's own path, each permutation revealing new configurations and spacial aspects
though time.
The playback system has been developed by Bobby Bird, using audio
content created in collaboration with Mark Bunegar &amp; Mark Harris, exploring new ways to present Modulate's unique sound.
Supported by SONM and Arts CouncilEngland.

I was one of 7 artists to participate in a project directed by international sound artist Francisco Lopez, in collaboration with AVA/Modulate. The participants created a shared a pool of location recordings made in the city, which subsequently underwent a series of  transformations through further collective and creative processes. These recordings and transformations have formed the basis of the final compositions created by each artist,  the project culminating in a CD release and concert performance at Ikon Eastside.

Combustion

Performed and recorded live at a Modulate event over a 6.1 sound system at the X-ray Factory in Smethwick 2003. All sound sourced from an antique musicbox.

Musicbox live version

A site specific sound and light installation by bobby bird. One of 4 installations created by sound and visual artists at 'Immerse' , part of Meteapod Expo at a Victorian swimming and wash baths, the Moseley Road Pools in Basall Heath birmingham 27/28 October2000. Made with recordings of the building, the boiler room and piping, played back over 8 speakers installed in the cubicles of the disused washrooms. Exploring audio montage,spacial sound, auto composition, multi speaker playback systems and sound to light.

A sonic re interpretation of the process of manufacturing, and an exploration of sound as a  by-product of the manufacturing process, using as  source material location recordings made at LTI, the makers of Black Taxi Cabs, and one of the last outposts of manufacturing in Coventry.
