Following the sublime smash debut “X17”, LA-based label Elbow Grease head conductor Dave Aju continues on his righteous piece-by-piece journey toward a multi-genre multiverse, where deep musical roots come together in kaleidoscopic expression, and unfakeable funk reigns supreme. 

“Spacio Tempo” picks up where we last left off, though with a notable drop in bpm as the title implies, with a rolling 4/4 textural tapestry that combines pulsating layers of soulful synth work, effervescent live percussion, and heavenly strings into a dense yet open-as-the-night-sky extended gem yet again. Just as the machine patterns of near-equator rhythms bubble over and begin to lock into a hypnotic groove, a bold left turn into a dank latin jazz noir vibraphone solo and SH-101 duet tango ensues, before landing us safely back at home base - right on time, at its own spacial pace. 

As per the Elbow Grease release recipe so far, the B1 cut offers DJs a more driving flex, this time in the form of the “Acido Tempo Mix”: a raw 303-driven take on the original which will undoubtedly stomp its way fiercely thru many bass bins in sweaty basements and warehouses worldwide. Finally the B2 blessing “Domingo Dub” closes things out, removing all but the highest vibes as an ambient drifting and uplifting take on the main theme, where the faintest of vocal tones, space echoes, and light percussive touches leave us elated in a West Coast, with subtle splashes from the D, sunset dream. Another solid single turned three-tracker sure-shot from EG.

Inner Science is a solo project by Masumi Nishimura. This talented producer creates ear-pleasing soundscapes designed to heighten your senses and brighten the world. Born in Tokyo, he’s been crafting highly impressive sonics, remixing audio masterpieces, and collaborating on some unusual projects like designing the music for a planetarium under his illusive guise for almost two decades. Landing on Cosmocities right on cue for summer, the Japanese producer deals out a new entry into his shimmering, shape-shifting mindset, the ‘Cosmo Tracks EP’.  Carrying us off to a dreamy and colourful headspace that bristles with vibrant sound design to wrap your ears around, Inner Science exhibits the elevating power of his music through these three original joints, with two remixes by Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard and Giegling staple Map.ache. 
 
The acid-infused glitter of ‘Unfold’ paves the way, making the rounds between club territory and exotica. ‘Quiet Track’ follows a similar course with its chiming melodies and driving bass on stealth mode, all scudding and mingling with haiku-esque spiritual balance, while ‘Never Fade Away’ blows the winds of poetic transcendence through a finely engineered mix of a racing groove and shower of lush textures.
 
UK treasure Joe Goddard takes ‘End of the Beginning’ for a slower jaunt across sun-soaked pastures. Laying his emphasis on the synth work and build-up, Goddard channels Inner Science's many facets and exuberance through a more directed and orchestrated path. Tackling the closer ‘Momentary Spread’, Map.ache treats us to a floor-friendly approach where bleached-out pads evaporate into the ether as the bass etches its way deep into your musical mind.

ChUd - Intro (Daniel Paul Remix)

For the second release on Frits Wentink’s new Bobby Donny label, he hands over to San2, aka Geert Schilder.

Hailing from Eindhoven in the south of the Netherlands, Schilder takes his production name from the building which houses his studio, on the second floor of the SAN building where the legendary radios and tape recorders were built by Philips.  With this in mind, it seems to follow suit that his music is mainly produced with analog techniques, incorporating equipment like the Roland TR-606, SH-101, SBX-1 and AKAI MPC 2000XL. 

The EP opens with the title track, ‘Impartial Perspective’ with its marching beat gradually forming into a machine groove that’s raw and funk-fuelled.  Moving on to San2’s second track, ‘Distinguishing Bias’ sits perfectly alongside the kind of wonky house manoeuvres that Frits is also known for.

And talking of Mr. Wentink, the EP also includes his remix of ‘Impartial Perspective’, which twists up the original into a deep and trippy, lo-fi journey, while still maintaining the raw groove of the original.

The Bobby Donny label hits number four with a first EP of 2016. After efforts from label owner Frits Wentink and Eindhoven producer SAN2, this one comes from Tlim Shug. The low-profile American producer has only one EP to his name so far, but it was an impressive one that came on Echovolt Records last year and suggested he has a passion for moody and lo-fi deep house.

'Rari Techno' is up first and operates in an underground cavern. It sets a sombre tone with its swirling pads and buried deep kicks all obscured by a grainy sheen of dust. That analogue warmth continues with 'Wig $plit' which has a loose and raw percussive line laid over tender piano chords, bumpy drums and a gritty vocal rap. It’s a fresh fusion that will get clubs on their toes before 'Mutuality' again sounds all knackered and broke, scuffed up and imperfect with its squelchy synths, off time hits and stuttering kicks. Last of all 'Overcaste Tune' is another zoned out and moody deep house offering that sounds like L.I.E.S. artist Terekke at his best. This is a brilliantly insular and atmospheric EP that oozes subtle emotion and a cautious sense of optimism.

Estonian pioneer Raul Saaramets exists in many parallel musical universes and this is reflected in his stellar output as Ajukaja, mining a rich furrow of stand out, oddball yet eminently danceable, groovy house and beat experiments. As the program co-director for Estonia’s national radio station Raadio  2, he’s given his country unprecedented access to some of the hottest music on this planet. He’s also made some of the finest underground dance records over the last few years including ‘Stranger’, ‘Benga Benga’ and “Rare Birds’ (made with long time production partner Andrevski) which were hammered by the scenes elite. His Bergerac debut has been a long time coming but well worth the wait. 

Mhmhmh is a super vibey late night burner which quite obviously gets its title from the faintly Germanic, sleazy vocal sample which goes ‘um hum um hum’. 

Sklad trips you out even more with a mangled, ecstasy tinged fading in(tro) which gives you ‘that’ feeling

Ajukaja puts his disco hat on for side 2 with Ekleeer. A super danceable disco cut rolls out until the vocals drop in and you realise that David Lynch is on the remix. 

Walk previously saw light as a tape only track but it’s playful scuffed up jiggery pokery cried out for a vinyl release so here it is..

As we continue the descent down the 3000’s of the Snowdonia mountain range. 3000.6 is Glyder Fawr at 3279 ft (999m) and is the higher of the two Glyderau summits which is gained up a scree slope above Glyn Y Can (Lake of the Dogs). The exact highest point between Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach is a matter of debate and they are only a few metres apart so you might well want to touch them both and join the rucksack club as we wiggle down the mountain side. Artwork is made with love for the local feral mountain goat population of Snowdon Massif, who were recently touted as bate by an idiotic hunting firm from across the borders by offering ‘the chance to shoot goats in the Welsh mountains for £1000’ yes you are reading this correctly… Protect our goats, protects our mountains, let this nomadic ancient breed run free and let our music take you to the niPPiest of peaks. 222 Units only.
