The 1970s was one of the golden times for soul music. Detroit. Memphis. Philadelphia. Atlanta. The dominance of the feel-good Motown sound of the 1960s gave way to a more daring and profound period in which producers from Them Bell and Gamble & Huff,  to Issac Hayes to Quincy Jones, flourished. Even Barry Gordy, the man behind Motown, had to adapt to the new boldness that further unveiled the Black experience as never before, and he had the power trio of Holland/Dozier/Holland, among others, to help. Combining Black gospel with rhythm and blues up until the late 1960s, soul music of the 1970s was a fertile period of creativity that may never be duplicated.


Playlist creator spotlight:
Velanche, a DJ and tastemaker for over 20 years, is the founder of Soul Dust Productions, a collective of local DJs with a deep love and respect for all things soul and funk, but whose musical palettes stretch the spectrum. The collective has put on many events and parties throughout San Luis Obispo and surrounding cities, from theme parties to company events, since its founding in 2016.

Velanche was also a radio DJ, having hosted the long-running “Urban Landscapes” for over 15 years on KCPR, the college radio station at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. The show and podcast has showcased a wide variety of jazz, soul and club-influenced music from around the world until its final airing on radio in 2015. The show will soon return with new episodes, in podcast form.

On the subject of Cal Poly, Velanche has moved to San Luis Obispo to attend the university, then hired there after graduation. Having just recently retired from Cal Poly, he’s putting his focus on sharing his love of music, including music production, social media content creation (YouTube and Instagram) and eventually live performances. And surely, there’s more to come.
