قمت بطلاء الأثاث الخاص بي في فترة الصباح وبعد الظهيرة. ثم أرسل السيد/كارتر حماره لي لأتمكن من الذهاب وزيارة " الـ " مقبرة، مقبرة توت عنخ آمون. رائعــة. كان السيد/كالندر هناك ثم تبعه الدكتور بريستد وحرمه وابنتهما الصغيرة. وقد تجولوا أعلي التل في كلا الاتجاهين. عاد السيد/ هاوسر و هوول من أسوان. السيدة و. & فـ. أتوا لعائلة ديڤيز لاحتساء الشاي.

أعتقد أنك علمت من البروفيسور نيوبري أنني متحمسة جداً لأن سجلات توت عنخ آمون، التي قام بتجميعها خالي، الراحل هاورد كارتر، ستقدم لمتحف الأشموليان كذكري له ولعمله. إنني في غاية الامتنان لكرم المتحف بتخصيص قاعة للوثائق خلال هذه السنوات الأخيرة الصعبة، مما كفاني عناء القلق الشديد علي سلامة هذه السجلات والحفاظ عليها. شرطي الوحيد في هذا الأمر أن يكون اسم خالي هو المتصدر دائما – وبالطبع لا داعي لذكر اسمي على الإطلاق.
أخبرني البروفيسور نيوبري أنه متأكد من أنك لن تمانع في كتابتي إليك لأطلب منك النصيحة والمساعدة في هذا الموضوع، الأمر الذي سأكون ممتنة له للغاية؛ وأرجو ألا أكون قد أثقلت عليك في طلبي هذا، وأضفت المزيد من الجهد على كاهلك، خاصةً خلال هذه الأيام، حيث أننا جميعاً مثقلون بالأعباء. أنا متحمسة جداً أن يتم العرض في أقرب وقت ممكن ، فإن هذا [الأمر] يشغل تفكيري منذ فترة. 
إذا قوبل عرضي للمتحف بالموافقة ، أود أن تتكرم بإبلاغي بما يستجد من إجراءات لازمة  في الوقت الذي يناسبك.

عزيزتي هيدي، 
وددت الكتابة لك، لكني منعتني أسباب عديدة. أولها، وقبل أي شيء، مرض اللورد كارنرڤون. فقد رأيته يوم الثلاثاء لخمس دقائق، ويوم الأربعاء تدهورت حالته. وكنت برفقة إيڤلين منذ قليل، حيث كان يوماً عصيباً عند تدهور حالته قبيل الساعة السادسة من مساء اليوم. كم كنت تعيساً جداً لكل ما يحدث في يوم عيد ميلادي. لماذا أنا شغوف به بهذا القدر؟ وتلك الفتاة البائسة كادت أن تحطم قلبي من قوة تفانيها لوالدها. فهي جالسة، ليلاً ونهاراً، مرهقة وقلقة، مستعدة لتهرع له في أي وقت. وفي صراع نفسي عنيف وقلق. الكارثة سوف تقع في أي لحظة من الآن. لكن إن استطاع أن ينجو من هذه الكبوة، فسوف يتعافى تماماً. بشكل أو بآخر، أشعر بالتفاؤل. فقد أراد أن يراني الليلة الماضية، لكنهم لم يسمحوا لي. وأنا أيضاً أريده أن يتجاوزهذه الأزمة.

عزيزتي، أعرف أن رسالتي هذه حزينة، لكنني محبط للغاية وقلق جداً على كارنرڤون العجوز. وأعيش هذه الايام في توتر بسبب مرضه.

تم اعداد الإضاءة اللازمة، كما تم عمل فتحة صغيرة في البوابة المختومة، تسمح بدخول جسم انسان.
حينها تبددت كل الشكوك، وتأكدنا من مكافأتنا بانتصارٍ أثريٍ عظيم.
وفي تلك اللحظة التي بلغت فيها الاثارة والحماس ذروتهما، قدِم المرسال الينا بالخبر الحزين، حيث آتي لاهثاً ليخبرني عن ثعبان الكوبرا الذي اقتحم المنزل متوجهاً ألي الغرفة [تلك التي نجلس بها حالياً] مروراً بالممر، ليلتف حول أحد قوائم المنضدة التي وضع عليها قفص الطائر، وقام بقتل طائري.
وعندما بدأت في استيعاب ما حدث، أدركت دلالة هذه المصادفة الغريبة رغم الاثاره العارمة لتلك اللحظة التي رأينا فيها محتويات الغرفة السابقة لغرفة الدفن على ضوء الشموع، وكشف الضوء رأس تمثال الملك وعلي جبهته رمز الملكية والحماية –الكوبرا.
وقت استيقاظ رؤساء العمال كان مرعباً: حيث كانت صورة الحية التي انهت حياة الطائر مازالت أمام أعينهم!
