DEXT Recordings has reached it’s landmark 10th release, and we now enter our next phase with this very special 2 track EP from a vital part of our label: Bodyjack. 

Aside from his collaboration with Special Request at the end of last year, this is Chris’s first new music under his Bodyjack alias since the Summer of 2016 (his “Cobra Effect EP” for us). His time away has helped him refocus, and its clearly paid off; Paul Woolford (who has been road testing this for a while) has stated it’s his best work to date and we absolutely agree.

“Nataraja” (Hindu for “Lord Of The Dance”) is one of those tracks we can’t actually describe, but it’s Bodyjack on rare form. His signature quirky percussion & synthwork is stripped down more than on his previous work, but this is one works in so many situations, we can’t wait to hear what you think.

On the flip, “Tandava” (the name given to the dance of Nataraja!), is a peak-time Detroit Bass style workout with booming drops and razor sharp edits aimed right at the floor.

Bodyjack - Nataraja EP [DEXT010]

The 6th Bodytrax release is the first in a new series and marks the first appearance of artists other than Bodyjack on the label. He has invited some of his favourite kindred spirits along for some duelling action over the machines with the simple premise for each EP; both deliver a track apiece, which is then remixed by the other.

It is with great pleasure to say that the first to step-up to the plate is Fiedel (MMM, Ostgut Ton, Berghain etc). The Berliner whose work has featured in Chris’s DJ sets for aeons, has been behind some of the music that has without question influenced the Bodytrax label since the outset. His idiosyncratic production style meshes perfectly with Bodyjack, and it’s safe to say fans of both will not be disappointed to have this duel kick off the series.

Another bullet from the Hypercolour stable, Bodyjack debuts on the label with this two tracker, the anthemic ‘Feel Real Good’ and the darker strains of ‘The Widowmaker’.

Bodyjack, AKA Chris Finke, has been producing some well polished techno and house grooves for a few years now, for labels like Trapez, Luke Slater’s Mote­Evolver, and his very own Flux Recordings. ‘Feel Real Good’ finds him in a housier mood, albeit one that pumps up the jams to 11, and carves out a bona fide club killer. With its solid, skippy beats and classic bassline groove, the vocal clips ring out in true rave fashion, whilst the b­line ramps up, coming across like a vintage Guy Called Gerald or 808 State joint, with some subtle warehouse stabs keeping the cut nicely bouncing.

On ‘The Widowmaker’, Bodyjack flexes his techno leanings, throwing down a muscular and urgent groove, Reese style bass washes and a classic vox sample from the 80s. Another winner from Bodyjack, and a superb offering for Hypercolour.

With over ten years of touring, DJing and producing under his belt already, it’s a pretty safe bet that if you’re into techno music you’ll already know a little about the man behind Bodyjack, Chris Finke. Having recently retired from his government name in music, his Bodyjack alias’ main focus seems to simply be living up to its name with Finke writing and releasing physical and irrepressibly catchy music under the moniker on labels like Hypercolour, Unknown To The Unknown and his own self-titled imprint. As a resident at Birmingham’s Atomic Jam and a UK DMC finalist Finke’s already got a brimming history, but it’s very much the future he was concerned with when we caught up with him earlier today to discuss his music, the Chicago indebted mixtape he made us and his upcoming appearance in the Dance Mania hosted Room Two on Friday 20th March.

Bodyjack Vs Chicago Mix For Fabric [March 2015]

BodyTrax drops it’s second EP of 2016 with another fine 3-tracker from Bodyjack; mastered by Alden Tyrell and out via Clone.

“Laugh It Up” opens things up and we are in vintage Bodyjack territory from the outset. Rough (and we mean rough!) beats and percussion, vocal hook and a metallic riff combined with possibly his ugliest bassline to date to make this an essential addition the bag/crate of any house DJ. “Slow Clap” strips the track right down to just drums and bass taking the A1 even more rawness. File under “Warehouse”.

The title track “I’m Here All Week” on the flip is one of those simple-but-infectious house tracks that you’re going to remember after a night out. Once again, our man’s synth n’ bass work duck around those sharply programmed beats he's known for to round off the EP with a bang.

Fans of Bodyjack won’t be disappointed with this one, and there’s a lot more to come this year from the label, so stay tuned…

Firstly, a huge thanks to everyone for supporting us so far - 2016 has seen the DEXT label continuing to go from strength to strength, with our Callahan and Mella Dee EP's backed with remixes from Hodge and Endian which have been been super well received. Now for the third EP of the year from our resident comedian Bodyjack.

Bodyjack has been an integral part of DEXT since he remixed Dubspeeka on our 2nd release and headlined our label takeover of Privilege in Ibiza last Summer. We are very excited about his return to the label with this 3-tracker (and our first full solo artist EP!), and we think you're going to dig this...

The title track “Cobra Effect” is one of those tracks you aren't going forget in a hurry. Intense and brooding, we are hard-pushed to categorise this, but layers of sinister bass coupled with dark, driving snares and erie synth work culminate masterfully, making this the perfect DEXT track.

“Hydra Effect” lifts the vibe with a straight up peak-time house jam with a sting in the tail. A raw-but-infectious bassline winds along under Bodyjack's signature killer drum programming, before blasting off with something you aren't going to expect.

Rounding the EP off is “Slowine Effect”: a proper dancehall workout (reminiscent of Bodyjack's earlier work) and a real cross-genre party starter. The most upbeat of the 3 tracks; this again takes all the elements of what we love about the music from the past and cleverly works them into something special for the rave.

And that's not all for Bodyjack on DEXT this year – he will be back with a one-off Ltd record called “Hot Shot”, backed with a very “Special” remixer...but more on that soon!

This is a live recording of my support set for Leftfield on their "Leftism 22" tour at the Manchester o2 Apollo. It was the second show of the weekend and the set I felt I really got to grips with, so I was happy that it also worked when I played it back. It's not a peak time set by any means, and its one of the rare times I got the chance to play a load of my favourite electronic records together in a huge venue for a really receptive crowd. Bodyjack's "Christmas In Detroit"  - Threads Radio (Dec 20)

Over the last few years, Bodyjack (aka Chris Finke) has been confidently carving a path very much his own through the stormy and unpredictable waters of electronic music, and refreshingly doing it on his terms. 

From the outset, his early productions on Hypercolour UTTU and Ultramajic showed incredible depth and dance floor sensibilities, frequently mastering that difficult line between genres that producers seek, but often fall short of (and often sounding contrived when trying). His vinyl-only label series “Bodytrax” (which he proudly runs with the Clone.nl crew in Holland) is an ongoing outlet for these productions; one that ebbs and flows through his passion for creating what he feels like organically and not what’s being hyped at the time. Drawing on his years of experience as a DJ and not being one to settle simply for “getting the job done”, his output is renowned for being incredibly effective and standing out in the sets of DJs the world over, with his music consistently featured on Radio 1 shows and essential mixes. In 2016, he dropped his critically “Cobra Effect EP” on DEXT which was championed by the likes of Black Madonna and Jackmaster, which led to an invitation by legendary pioneers Leftfield to remix "Song Of Life" on their historic 22 Year Anniversary re-release of “Leftism” in 2017. He also explored collaborations including “Hotshot” with long-time supporter Paul Woolford aka Special Request, and his new “Duel Series” which kicked off in late 2019 with Berlin legend Fiedel.

On the performance side, his early days saw him as a DMC DJ Championship competitor, and then cutting his teeth worldwide as a techno DJ (including a residency at the UK's largest and most respected parties “Atomic Jam” in Birmingham). His lifelong obsession with seeking out and collecting music has also paid off in spades in the form of his vast record collection, which he explores with mixes and shows he has produced for the likes of Radio 1, FACT, Mixmag, DJ Mag, and Rinse FM. Armed with these experiences and credentials, he is known as a technically skilled and incredibly intuitive DJ, taking risks where they count and never playing the same set twice. Tapping into his love affair with music and working the floor, he prides himself in being able to play pretty much anywhere, be it techno, electro & EBM in the main rooms of Berghain or Fabric, jacking Chicago and acid house alongside the originators in the “Dancemania Mixmag Lab”, or electronica & beyond supporting Leftfield on their Leftism 22 UK arena UK arena tour in 2017.
