Fantastic Effects zeroes in on the percussive end of club music, with a carefully curated selection of bold and direct tracks from some of the most exciting producers from Australia and abroad.

Crazy   Legs    (an   eminent   dance   freak   by   a   different   name),    The   Ghan    (Fishing),   and   Portuguese   kuduro   pioneer    DJ N.K.    open   proceedings   with   some   peculiar   rompler   workouts   before    T.Morimoto    and    DIN    (Chunyin/Rainbow   Chan /Moon   Holiday)   deliver   two   driving   cuts   from   different   perspectives.   We   then   call   on   Body   Promise‘s  H   ED Ardennes ,   Perth/Sydney   cyberpunks    Hot   Wavs    and   Melbourne   noise   duo    WDK    to   dial   up   the   overdrive   and     flip   us all   the   digital   bird.    fake    (Cassius   Select/BV)   and   dream   collab    DJ   Plead   &   DJ   Logic    offer   two   darker   atmospheres   at kick   on   and   kick   off   tempos   respectively,   and    Andy   Garvey    makes   her   spectacular   debut   with   a   floor-filler   only   a seasoned   DJ   could   create.    Poison    appear   courtesy   of   Melbourne   label   Sumac   for   a   small   taste   of   the   MIDI   east,   and to   cap   it   off   multidisciplinary   artist    Makeda    backs   up   the   ferocity   of    friendships    with   a   delicate   and   sublime cadence.

Fantastic Effects

Body Promise returns to the tape format with a 12 chapter missive from the Australian underground. 
With this stellar survey of corporeally-minded music, they compile some of the most interesting mutations of modern dance music. Smooth Sensation marks the third and final installment in the Body Promise compilation series. 

As the reels begin to spin, Fia Fiell (One Third of Jaala) builds to a textured wash of sound that eases the listener into the varied and exhilarating world this tape compiles. The leisurely, dubbed-out atmosphere of Low Flung and Freda & Jackson's contributions preface the bass-heavy boisterousness that both HED Ardennes (Fishing, Body Promise) and Letabruthaknow (aka Setwun) favour. Fishing's The Ghan opts for a hypnotic approach that slowly binds the listener in its spell until they realize it's time to flip over the tape. 

Waterhouse collates broken filaments of sound into a fissured mirror,  reflecting odd visions and ghostly presences. Lou Karsh's electro transmission has a spacey, introspective edge that it shares with the dissociative acid Andy Garvey has programmed for her return to the label. Both Lucy Cliche and DJ Yoni (Holy Balm) have been working at the nexus of DIY production and unruly electronics for aeons, each contributing demented dancefloor directives that are shot through with personality. We close with Emily Glass’ alien oddity, a pendulum that swings from shuddering intensity to eerie ambience until the tape stops spinning.

DJ Ground began as a DJ in Osaka and established him as a part of the club scene through his club appearances all over Japan, as well as locally in Osaka through organising the acclaimed ChillMountain festival Just outside the city, which has been running for 10 years now.

After a few years putting out singles, 12 inches, and tracks on a few compilations, this year he released his debut full length, Vodunizm on ChillMountainREC

His sound moves between a meditative, quietly confident breed of house, to full sound collages of sampled instruments, voices and field recordings. His arrangements are heavy with whirling synth textures, pulsing basses, a smattering of bongo and a whole lot of tape hiss.

Our guest mix this week comes from Kazan based producer @YancityGurl, one of the instrumental members of the growing wave of murky dance music flowing out of eastern Europe. His CV is well and truly blossoming; last month's Lacuna EP is a beautifully overdriven exploration into a gritty, snarling breed of lo fidelity techno, and his role in orchestrating the @opal-tapes U S S R (Ur Status Social Resistance) compilation has brought the dark underbelly of Russian and Ukranian club music into the spotlight. 

YancityGurl gets deep in the cut this week for Body Promise with a bunch of tapey lo fidelity jams for the moodier moments. There's plenty of unreleased and forthcoming material here, snag a sneak preview before these nuggets hit the press.

‘Open Book’ is a puddle. Stormwater. Runoff from the torrential babble of clubbers in clubs, talking over the music. Mouths held unnaturally wide open, gushing verbal porridge, desperate to accept and to be accepted by others. This doof dialect is always forming new idioms which will ultimately merge into a universal speech, yelled over a 909 kick by all humanity.

Freda & Jackson is the uncategorizable joint project of two musical omnivores - blending house, jazz, downtempo, broken beat and a few secret herbs & spices into a unique mode of self expression that transcends any genre boundaries. Their contribution “Flux” is a scattershot sample collage of diced breaks, booming voices and spiralling echoes that drift outward and coalesce together into a hallucinatory miasma as they’re dubbed in and out of the mix.

Letabruthaknow is another moniker of the multi-talented composer and bandleader Setwun. With this pseudonym, they seems intent on burning the signifiers of the UK’s soundsystem continuum down to a few red-hot embers. On “DANCEFLOORPULLINUP”, sirens wail and disincorporated MCs cut over the massive bassline and breakbeats, conjuring up the sweaty exhilaration of a rammed dance even on a quiet commute. In its element, unleashing this would be utter MURDERATION!

Hed Ardennes happens to be one-half of Body Promise, the lovely people who put this compilation together (They’re not the ones writing this, lest you accuse them of massive egotism). Before you write “Acid Funk”’s inclusion as mere nepotism, your well-hewn cynicism will be torn to shreds by this RIPPER. The rippling bassline is underpinned by taught, sinewy drum programming, particularly the steely slice of a incredibly sharp hi-hat, that balances out the shuddering low end to make for a lithe dancefloor killer.

Fia Fiell is the moniker of Carolyn Schofield, who channels her virtuosic skill as a pianist and refined understanding of timbre into visceral electronic music that evades the posthumous toe-tag of “ambient”, creating broad and shifting soundscapes that retract and expand, from tender melodies to dense walls of sound.  "Ladder" opens proceedings: the watery figures dance like sunbeams reflected by the sea, the parts forming together like shimmering threads intertwined into a gorgeous filigree.
