This is how I felt the desert. This is what it inspired in me. Once I recorded it, I could also hear a breathy tenor sax in the lower register, imperfect, where not all the notes are articulated, the ends of phrases slurred, like a tired, dazed man, almost delirious, with little energy but with his heart awake and crying. Stumbling in the desert, full of regret and gratitude now that he knows death is near. He is mumbling to his wife far away how much he regrets forgetting her and how much he loves her, how grateful he is for all that life brought him, his children, ... He sees them growing strong and healthy, smiles as he sees their children. He remembers his friends and all the dear moments, full of life, hurt, honesty, regret, loss.

He lies there breathless on his back in the sand, his eyes open, mouth slightly parting, ....with a gentle smile on his face. Redeemed in his last steps.

Finale

I made this song while in Tokyo a few months after the Fukushima disaster. There was a quiet sadness in the air, water and the people of Japan. I felt the events of Fukushima everywhere.

My version of "Destiny's Door" using primarily the vocal and percussion track of the original as the inspiration for this version of the Bleeding Fingers Contest.

This one started with the bass line on the upright. I built everything else around it. I cycled the sections in threes. One of the percussion parts is a syncopated cracking branch.

I felt like a bird up there. A track I made on the 39th floor of a hotel while in Shin-Yokohama near Tokyo. The sun was shining and the sky was blue.
