Release Info: 
Sound Avenue's second offering of 2019 finds the label showcasing new interpretations of 'Shadow People' by Madloch and Subnode. Originally released in October of last year as part of the duo's 'Second Sight' EP, it marked the beginning of a creative partnership between the Belgian artists. Sound Avenue now calls upon Charles Webster and Nordfold and Budakid to reinterpret the track for the new year.

The second and final interpretation of 'Shadow People' is provided by Nordfold and Budakid who also make their label debut. Hailing from the Netherlands (although Budakid now resides in Berlin) the Dutch duo have been occasional studio partners since making their collaborative debut in June of 2017. Both owning impressive solo discography's, collectively the pair have showcased their music on All Day I Dream, Atlant, Last Night On Earth, Lost Diaries and Lost and Found, with joint releases coming on the equally impressive Einmusika, Stil Vor Talent and Sudbeat Music. Now presenting their first collaborative effort of 2019, Nordfold and Budakid round the release out with a fresh take on 'Shadow People'. On a backbone of buoyant beats and neatly tailored percussion comes retro grooves and solemn atmospheres. Fluid, bouncy and tastefully nostalgic, it's a piece that moves through a variety of reflective motifs. Initiating the main break are wispy overlays, descending over the framework as a hazy harmonic resonance saturates your senses, before the groove resets for a celestial finale. A stunning interpretation from Nordfold and Budakid who's studio synergy seems to grow with each successive outing. It caps off a well rounded remix edition for 'Shadow People' which is sure to find its way into a broad range of DJ sets over the coming months.

PREMIERE: Madloch & Subnode - Shadow People (Nordfold & Budakid Remix) [Sound Avenue]

Making his original EP debut for Proton Music in summer 2018, Stas Drive provided another triumphant moment with his twin-track "Abyssal" EP. As Particles now returns to the EP, remixes from the Netherlands and India provide new intrigue.

An artist with a long-involvement in the underground dance industry though his work with Club Paradigm and as co-founder of the Klopfgeist label, Niels Schilder's Malbetrieb production moniker has been a byword for quality. With a strong passion to understand the world of synthesis and a 'fully analogue set-up', Malbetrieb's production work has seen him feature on a host of leading imprints that include Dave Seaman's Selador, BOg's ATLANT and Dutch behemoth, Click Records. Supported by such leading lights as Eelke Kleijn, Robert Babicz and Minilogue, the Malbetrieb sound has spanned a decade after a March 2009 debut for Magnitude Recordings. 

A debut for Proton Music saw a stunning rework of Dousk's "French Sauce" in May 2018, while a contribution to Izzet's "Summer Goodbye" on Particles saw a sublime remix of "Timer Set". Now returning, the Malbetrieb remix of "Abyssal" is a dark and brooding affair with stripped back groove and authentic techno credentials. Echoes of Stas Drive's riff pierce the mid-range, waxing and waning in sumptuous fashion, while gloriously textured pads ripple across the stereo spectrum with ease. A dynamic bass pattern adds further weight in a spellbinding interpretation.

New Delhi resident and owner of the ever-growing Qilla Records, Kohra's star continues to grow in the underground dance firmament with over a century of production credits to his name. Partnered by Vipul Angirish under his SHFT pseudonym, the pair have ridden the crest of a wave with their unique collaborative sound that has continued to bear fruit since a May 2014 debut for Patent Skillz. A host of blue-chip imprints have since gone on to bear witness to the Kohra and SHFT sound including Steyoyoke, Perspectives Digital and Traum, with a further quartet of releases on Qilla.

A remix of Arthur Minnahmetov's "Hole", marked the duo's Particles debut in August 2017 and it is therefore a pleasure to welcome back the celebrated Indian partnership with a standout remix of "Modular Porn". Characterised by a seismic kick and techno inspired rhythm, the refrains of Stas Drive's melodic phrasing ripples into aural range alongside a machine-gun fire hi hat percussion. A glorious arpeggio with its thematic roots in the original creates a scintillating impact as a rasping bassline punctures the low end with ease. Subtle vocal flourishes juxtapose enticingly against raw analogue power in the third movement to create an inspiring and innovative new version.

In this one, windy noises float around and almost seem to be talking. Bringing you further into the buildup of a strong and deep bassline, working in perfect harmony with brasses and bells alike. When you hear the alarm sounds coming up, you just know you are in for a treat. In combination with his smartly placed percussions and toms he manages to create a wonderful groove and the story is complete. Rave Sickness is one to keep an eye on for sure!

Really hard to choose!

8Kays Feat. Kyla Millette - NEL [Sincopat UpSideDown 12]

2019 sees the introduction of a new ATLANT concept in the first of our Re-WIRED series, which presents a track from our back catalogue to different artists who take the circuitry, stems and elements apart - to create something new fresh and innovative.

Thodoris Triantafillou’s original of ‘Scorn’ garnered attention from a host of DJs in 2018, with the likes of Solomun, Black Coffee, Adana Twins and John Digweed all featuring the infectious vocal in live sets and radio shows. Given Scorn’s genre crossing popularity it seemed the logical choice to remix and Jonas Rathsman, Night Talk and Prop & Ganda all demonstrate creativity and diversity in their approach.

First up is Sweden’s Jonas Rathsman [ELEMENTS] with his intricate and unique take on ‘Scorn’. Even though Jonas fuses many layers there is always a complete sense of space throughout this mini opus. Buzzing lines, simmering arps, clanging organic percussives and chopped up vox awaken your senses as deep bass, a nagging groove, modal diatonic chords and a momentous breakdown engulf you. The off kilter keys and use of the iconic vocal throughout make this the perfect mood setter.

Already part of the ATLANT family, Switzerland’s Night Talk returns to the label fresh from the ATL020 Moran EP and releases on his AYM label, plus MoBlack. Lukas’s remix is a dark classy 4/4 synth infused builder, using the vocal to increase the drama alongside jagged lines and stirring FX before emotional flowing keys enter for a driving sustained dance-floor barrage. Plus the DJ friendly outro is perfect for extended looped musical transitions.

This maiden Re-WIRED journey completes a perfect circle bringing ‘Scorn’ back to Greece via Prop & Ganda, who have close links to Thodoris Triantafillou’s Glory Hill Studio under the hill of the ancient Acropolis citadel. With a real dusk vibe Prop & Ganda have produced a pure club gem that froths away, unleashing menacing arps and heavy bass. The ‘Scorn’ vocal is used to full effect, especially in a breakdown that make you imagine your hands are raised, feeling the cool night air on your fingers amongst a hot intense crowd all swaying in unison to the beats.


All three of these remixes have been road tested by ATLANT impresario BOg from Tel Aviv and Beirut to Kiev and Odessa. It’s safe to say that all three re-imaginings work brilliantly. So it’s a huge thank you to all four artists involved with re-calibrating the wires and circuits on this project.
