Fischgeist was recorded in a former water tank in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg in August 2019. The nineteenth-century brick building consists of five layered circles, with a spiral staircase in the middle leading up to an exit to a hilltop. Inside, it's humid and cold, the temperature always around 8–10 ℃. The building’s acoustics produce a long reverberation that lasts up to 20 seconds.

‘One day between recording sessions, a man, a passerby, wanted to look inside the building. He told me that it used to be full of fish. For a second I imagined a huge round aquarium with loads of fish swimming around in circles. Then I realized that he meant dead fish were kept there, to be sold on markets during the GDR era. But the image of fish swimming in the space stayed with me.’

In conversation with the space of the water tank, Tomoko Sauvage searches beyond the limits of her self-invented ‘natural synthesizers’: porcelain and glass bowls, filled with water and amplified with hydrophones.

While she continues to develop some of the classic techniques heard on her previous album Musique Hydromantique (Shelter Press, 2017) – hydrophonic feedback (Kinetosis Study) and ‘fortune biscuits’ (porous pieces of terracotta that emit tiny singing bubbles) (Deluge) – here new elements are combined with delicate gestures to make curious noises: stroking bowls’ surfaces to imitate the voices of sea mammals (Metamorphosis), drawing dots and circles by rubbing stones against stones underwater (Exit) …

The underwater amplification of quasi-inaudible sound is even more magnified in the air by the echo of the water tank. Not only tiny bubbles, but also micro-movements of the bones and veins of the hand holding the sonorous objects in the water, are intensely amplified – sounding like a tempest on the opening Deluge.

Sauvage's longtime research into hydrophonic feedback develops with her new obsession with natural harmonics and sympathetic resonance. In Flying Vessels, the percussive notes of struck bowls resonate and turn into feedback loops before decaying, fueled by electric signal gain. Kinetosis Study is a sonic etude on fluid dynamics – the flow velocity, pressure and density of manually shaped water waves directly controlling the aquatic synthesizer's parameters.

August, when the mid-summer Ghost Festival is held, is traditionally known as the Ghost Month throughout East Asia. The spirits of the dead visit their living families, who welcome them with feasts, dancing and music. Miniature lantern-laden boats are released in rivers, to help lost ghosts find their way home.

Animated by formless matter – water, electricity, sound – Fischgeist celebrates a phantasmagoric journey, as the souls of aquatic lifeforms find their way out of the labyrinth of the water tank.

“OMOKENTRO” is the second release of Ingrid Schmoliner and Elena Kakaliagou’s “Nabelóse“ that sees them blend their voices with the sounds of the former’s prepared piano and the latter’s French horn. Recorded in the big water reservoir in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg as part of the fourth edition of bohemian drips’ “Speicher – festival for site-specific music“ in 2020, this LP captures a one-of-a-kind performance, influenced both by the surroundings’ idiosyncratic acoustics as well as by two very different social environments—with and without an audience. Spanning over 45 minutes, “OMOKENTRO” takes the attentive listener on a journey through time and space—not only reminiscent of the duo’s music reverberating through the reservoir but also through the memories of its enchanted visitors.

The duo draws on a variety of musical influences ranging from New Music to Minimal, as well as, occasionally, Greek folk music, or their own English-language compositions for voice in order to integrate them into their artistic approach. When playing together, they blur the lines between composition and improvisation while being mindful of the resonant qualities of the space and the people around them. The duo interacts with sensitivity and freedom to each other as to the environment and the audience, that become both a source of inspiration and resonant bodies in this process. Ingrid Schmoliner works with a piano, prepared with wooden sticks and even porcupine needles as well as e-bows to approximate the aesthetics of electronic music through the use of mostly acoustic means. Elena Kakaliagou invents unconventional new techniques for her horn, that make the instrument sound like the wind, the sea, or like a roaring animal; a few minutes later the well-known lyrical sound of the french horn accompanies the voice of Ingrid Schmoliner in a more classical duo.

While the production of “bohemian drips’“ latest release – “Iván Paz’ Visions of Space“ [BD007] – was dedicated to the exploration of virtual space in a physical context, the label’s next “binaural“ in-house production reaches out to new recording ethics: “Die Milchstrasse Flockt“ [BD008] marks a turning point in the label’s history, as a group of Berlin based artists got together only for this record: The quintet consisted of Ruth-Maria Adam, Alexander P. Jovanovic, Inox Kapell, Josefine Lukschy and Alexander Meurer. They have no collective history or collaborative background – the group was only set to drive out to “Schloss Freudenberg“, a looming Chateau built in 1905, with a truckload of instruments. Their aim was to embrace the possibilities of the space, its historic collection of rare and strange instruments and its acoustics. Formed organically through the time spent in the castle, the album turned out to be an obscure yet beautiful assemblage of strange noises and sounds, staged and amplified through the space itself and the perspective of a “KU-100“ dummy-head microphone. All music was created with a wide range of acoustic instruments and unique sound devices, captured in binaural “Kunstkopf Stereofonie“. 

“Die Milchstrasse Flockt” expanded the possibilities of spacial arrangement during the recording process, resulting in unique soundscapes that might be considered “Non-Music”. The LP takes you back to early electronic music, such as Ash-Ra Temple or Klaus Röder’s “Kristallationen“, despite the fact only acoustic instruments were being used: Side A starts off with playful twists and turns, kraut à la “Cluster“ or “Popol Vuh“, and lets you travel through trippy improvisation into soft-psychedelic landscapes, micro-sounds and unconventional sound-art experiments. 

The A-Side exhausts the possibilities of the castle’s expansive collection of historical instruments such as one of the few “cristal baschets“ worldwide, “singing drums“ or Professor Klaus Fessmann’s "Klangsteine“, and bends the ideas of musical structure. Side B is based on the massive array of gongs of different sizes and materials from the castle’s private collection and can be described as classic drone, with a swerve into primitive music: This facet can be attributed to Ruth-Maria Adam’s anti-classical use of the violin and the recorder combined with Inox-Kapell’s remarkable understanding of the castle’s gong collection’s sonic potential.

The key to this album is capturing the first meeting of five musicians, who all come from very different musical backgrounds. This created a fresh and unbiased scenario for sonic exploration within the unique space of “Schloss Freudenberg“. A scenario prefaced by its transformation in the 1980’s, described by Hugo Kükelhaus as a “field of experience towards the unfurling of the senses and thoughts“.

[BD009] "Mazen Kerbaj – Walls Will Fall: The 49 Trumpets of Jericho"

A site-specific composition, recorded live and in binaural audio, in the big water reservoir of Berlin-Pankow.

[Information]

"Walls Will Fall" is a site-specific composition by Mazen Kerbaj which premiered on May 19th 2018. The piece guided 49 Berlin trumpeters through the unique acoustics of a large water reservoir in Berlin-Pankow, whose winding corridors are reminiscent of a labyrinth as in early depictions of Jericho’s ancient city map: According to the old testament, Jericho’s walls collapsed under the sound of seven trumpeters, blowing their horns for seven days while circling around the city. Far from the religious background of the story, it is the idea of music breaking walls and barriers that is central to this composition. During the performance of "Walls Will Fall" the water reservoir’s natural reverberation becomes the accomplice of every sound and movement. As the musicians walk in the space while performing the seven parts of the composition, an acoustic labyrinth unfolds. 

This performance was mainly captured by the 3D-perspective of a binaural “Kunstkopf KU-100“ microphone. Thus, headphones are recommended for listening.

[BD010] Microtub – Chronic Shift LP

Microtub is the world’s first and only microtonal tuba trio, exploring Just Intonation and the rich harmonic potential of the tuba. This album features material from Robin Hayward’s pieces „Sonic Drift“ and „Star System“, recorded in the stunning acoustics of the large water reservoir in Berlin-Pankow, reworked and mixed with analogue synthesizers by Peder Simonsen.

Recorded in „Kunstkopf“ stereophony, this unlikely combination of tubas and simple synth pitches provides a meditative and immersive experience, and an auditory glimpse into a truly unique acoustic space. While „Chronic Shift“ zones in on the neutral microtonal harmonies that underly „Sonic Drift“, the synths on „System Reboot“ mainly shadow the harmonics in the giant room, both as sustained pitches and as spaced out droplets lending movement to the track.

Recorded during the first edition of ‘Speicher – festival for site-specific music’, this LP represents an abstract measurement of space and a complex dialogue between two dedicated instrumentalists and composers, exciting the heavily reverberating acoustics of the old water reservoir where the festival takes place. Dörner’s unique electronically-augmented trumpet and Scott’s highly prolific array of synthesisers and electronics create a rich, ever-changing textural ambience for the two pieces, which cohere around a mutual listening of the unpredictabilities of each other’s playing. Their compositional approach is given further dimension by their engagement with the space in which these performances take place, whose extraordinary acoustic qualities are directly shaped by the presence or absence of the bodies of the audience. While the A-Side was captured in a ‘classic’ recording session; each individual sound reverberating in the cavernous empty space, the B-Side documents a more dense live performance, the musicians enveloped by a deeply engaged festival audience, whose presence influences both the movements of the sounds in space and the interaction between the two musicians.

The spatial information on this LP was captured with a binaural dummy head microphone (Neumann KU-100) – listening with headphones is recommended for a more immersive experience.

The third EP of Berlin-based band Dog Dimension navigates through a world of dystopian pool parties and throbbing stretches of asphalt, captured on five slick songs that maneuver between experimental rock, grunge and alt-metal on a classic guitar-bass-drums setup: While "Sticky People" is lush with tribal rhythms and hypnotic vocals, "Scrunchy Face" rattles through your ears like a speeding e-scooter on cobblestones. A cool-headed verse and a slow-mosh chorus exchange an affirmative nod on the title track "Endless Summer" – the doom-disco bridge lurks patiently behind the next cowbell. The power trio sprinkles "Doggernaut" with the occasional blast beat, while "Drop Shadow by the Pool" gently grazes avant-rock territory. A record that is, simply put, fun – or to quote the band’s singer: "My brain is hanging on a thread / It’s summer and I’m happy / I don’t want it to end"

A1 – Sticky People

After LISLBAR finished the Compilation "Who's That Man - A Tribute To Conny Plank" in 2012, bohemian drips teamed up with Simon Clement aka ESCLÉ from Leipzig to do a Live Sessions Tour in five german cities. In munich driptastic Ur-Kraut-Monsters EMBRYO played a massive, worldmusic fusion show at one of munichs finest clubs - STROM. Finally we found some time to listen through all the recordings of the concert - WERMUTH. found nearly 2h of material for your pleasure. With breaks, applause and ambiency - all out of the material we found on a fieldrecorder. Strange impressions - out in space.

The Berlin based artist collective “bohemian drips” collaborated with the Norwegian sound designers from “KLX Audio” for their first vinyl release: “Zuhause im Weltall”. A record containing binaural Kunstkopf recordings,that were quite literally captured in the Berlin underground. The concept of the LP marks a counterpoint to contemporary production and recording habits: Six artists were invited to compose a piece of music referring to the reverberations of a 60 meter-long underground tunnel under the old Kindl Brewery in Neukölln where Portishead recorded their masterpiece “Machine Gun”. The vinyl is limited to 300 copies and features six compositions over 30 minutes by Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten), Clockyange a.k.a. Anklepants & RATBAG, Mini Pops Junior, Matti, DYN and Kolophonium. Binaural recordings provide the listener with a three dimensional slab of audio porn, best enjoyed on headphones.

After his incredible performance at the "Secret Illegal Caribbean Floor", Berlin based artist "Caribbean Thomas" decided that time has come to share his interpretation of tropical music with a broader audience. "The Birth of Caribbean Thomas" is a mindbending trip through an intergalactic universe of backwards-talking dolphins, steeldrum infernos and the well-known font "Comic Sans". This mix was recorded in the maybe most secret illegal tropical place in whole Berlin Neukölln. Caribbean Thomas' signing on bohemian drips is an important milestone for the collective. Together we look forward to explore the mystical depths of tropical music.

“Marika” is an improvised free jazz trio from Istanbul, formed by Korhan Futacı (alto & tenor saxophones), Berke Can Özcan (drums) and Barlas Tan Özemek (bass). The Berlin based label “bohemian drips” invited them to work with the amazing acoustics of the old “Kindl” brewery’s Sudhaus and its massive copper tanks in the middle of Berlin-Neukölln. This was made possible with the kind support of the “KINDL - Centre for Contemporary Art”.

The LP was recorded live and in binaural audio with “Kunstkopf” 3D microphones. Listening to these recordings on headphones gives the audience the threedimensional perspective of being seated literally in the center of the recording scenario. “bohemian drips presents: Marika” is the trio’s debut record and will be released on audiophile 180g vinyl by bohemian drips in august 2015.

Mystical Communication Service is an ever evolving music project fronted by the fictional Yanez Di Mompracem, and backed occasionally by his collection of eccentric and very non-fictional bandmates from various corners of the world. It is an amalgamation of wayward drifters, uniting to bring the long lost art and bygone spirit of classic music back to the mainstream music scene. Soaring guitars and drums deeper than heartbeats, give their sound a touch of psychedelic rock infused with the wanderings and wondering of nomadic gypsies searching for a long forgotten home.

Microtub is the world’s first and only microtonal tuba trio, exploring Just Intonation and the rich harmonic potential of the tuba. This album features material from Robin Hayward’s pieces „Sonic Drift“ and „Star System“, recorded in the stunning acoustics of the large water reservoir in Berlin-Pankow, reworked and mixed with analogue synthesizers by Peder Simonsen.

Recorded in „Kunstkopf“ stereophony, this unlikely combination of tubas and simple synth pitches provides a meditative and immersive experience, and an auditory glimpse into a truly unique acoustic space. While „Chronic Shift“ zones in on the neutral microtonal harmonies that underly „Sonic Drift“, the synths on „System Reboot“ mainly shadow the harmonics in the giant room, both as sustained pitches and as spaced out droplets lending movement to the track.

Fischgeist was recorded in a former water tank in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg in August 2019. The nineteenth-century brick building consists of five layered circles, with a spiral staircase in the middle leading up to an exit to a hilltop. Inside, it's humid and cold, the temperature always around 8–10 ℃. The building’s acoustics produce a long reverberation that lasts up to 20 seconds.

‘One day between recording sessions, a man, a passerby, wanted to look inside the building. He told me that it used to be full of fish. For a second I imagined a huge round aquarium with loads of fish swimming around in circles. Then I realized that he meant dead fish were kept there, to be sold on markets during the GDR era. But the image of fish swimming in the space stayed with me.’

In conversation with the space of the water tank, Tomoko Sauvage searches beyond the limits of her self-invented ‘natural synthesizers’: porcelain and glass bowls, filled with water and amplified with hydrophones.

While she continues to develop some of the classic techniques heard on her previous album Musique Hydromantique (Shelter Press, 2017) – hydrophonic feedback (Kinetosis Study) and ‘fortune biscuits’ (porous pieces of terracotta that emit tiny singing bubbles) (Deluge) – here new elements are combined with delicate gestures to make curious noises: stroking bowls’ surfaces to imitate the voices of sea mammals (Metamorphosis), drawing dots and circles by rubbing stones against stones underwater (Exit) …

The underwater amplification of quasi-inaudible sound is even more magnified in the air by the echo of the water tank. Not only tiny bubbles, but also micro-movements of the bones and veins of the hand holding the sonorous objects in the water, are intensely amplified – sounding like a tempest on the opening Deluge.

Sauvage's longtime research into hydrophonic feedback develops with her new obsession with natural harmonics and sympathetic resonance. In Flying Vessels, the percussive notes of struck bowls resonate and turn into feedback loops before decaying, fueled by electric signal gain. Kinetosis Study is a sonic etude on fluid dynamics – the flow velocity, pressure and density of manually shaped water waves directly controlling the aquatic synthesizer's parameters.

August, when the mid-summer Ghost Festival is held, is traditionally known as the Ghost Month throughout East Asia. The spirits of the dead visit their living families, who welcome them with feasts, dancing and music. Miniature lantern-laden boats are released in rivers, to help lost ghosts find their way home.

Animated by formless matter – water, electricity, sound – Fischgeist celebrates a phantasmagoric journey, as the souls of aquatic lifeforms find their way out of the labyrinth of the water tank.

The Berlin based label “bohemian drips” was founded in 2011 by Alexander Meurer and Fillipp Vingerhoets and is specialized in developing, publishing and staging site-specific compositions in settings with distinctive acoustics. The inclusion of the spatial sound in as a compositional dimension forms the basis of this production process: To capture a three dimensional image, those productions are recorded in binaural audio ("Kunstkopf-Stereophonie"). Following this approach, the label organizes a yearly festival for site-specific music in two old water reservoirs in Berlin, Pankow. Since 2016, "bohemian drips" also releases studio LPs.
