Nicolas Jaar - With Just One Glance

A new collaborative pairing making its debut, LADS combine German techno mastery and South African soul and flair. The result of this symbiotic relationship is a brand new three-track EP that sees "Miss Jean" arrive at Proton Music.

Situated in Western Germany between Cologne and Dusseldorf, Langenfeld resident, Luc Angenehm, has hit the heights of the techno and deep house genres with his distinctive sound and rhythmic maturity. An accomplished pianist with over a decade's worth of experience and schooled at the Modern Musik School, Cologne, Angenehm's production work has been much-lauded. A century of production credits can be found against his name after an initial remix for Slaap Records in 2013 and Angenehm has not looked back with his work signed to City Life, Traum and Solid Shape. Furthermore, two original EPs in the shape of the "Kaiserkraft" and "Isabel" EPs for Proton Music have enhanced a golden reputation.

From Pretoria, in Guateng Province, close to the Johannesburg capital, South African, Deep Suite, has a similarly impressive background to his German counterpart. Describing his production soubriquet as "an intense and heartfelt set of musical contributions", his work has featured on Atal Music, Crevasse Records and Nothing But. Furthermore, his eponymously titled Deep Suite Records has also provided a vehicle for his production work to thrive.

Coming together under their own names, Luc Angenehm and Deep Suite joined forces on "Abgehn" for July 2016's "Tour De Traum XII", as the pair now collaborate once more, this time under their LADS pseudonym.

Opener, "Unterberg" is a wonderful study in stripped back beats and intricate percussive programming, while a sublime melodic phrase builds in analogue glory across the seven-minute piece. Modulating and filtering in vibrato glory, counterpoint melodies converge and drift apart with consummate ease. A sumptuous orchestral section fills the mid-point breakdown before familiar refrains build once more.

Illustrating elegant musicianship, as a sublime arpeggio rises and falls in reverb-laden glory, the title track is a work of modern art. Muted and layered with glassy, distorted overtones, "Miss Jean" sees a rich aural tapestry painted, reaching its denouement in the third movement. Juxtaposed against harsh, staccato vocal phrases, the resultant piece is a triumphant offering.

The final track, sees a collage of deep house chords combine with ticking, clicking, percussive groove in a deliciously sounding sonic texture that is "She". The aural landscape is then further enhanced by a loquacious vocal sample that proclaims the title while expanding on a theme that eloquently describes that "She's the fire upon my rock", "…grew wings like butterfly", "…leaves today, arrives tomorrow". A glorious exploration in sound and narrative, "She" tells a beautiful story.

As LADS forms a stunning new partnership, "Miss Jean" arrives on the scene with beauty and poise.

Sol Selectas run by Sabo welcomes back Unders who has been a prominent feature in the label's back catalogue. Unders has also contributed to other imprints including Kindisch, Under Your Skin, Sincopat and Katermukke along with his own Happy Camper Records.

Unders, is a producer from Holland, who had a break through song called “Syria” on Sol Selectas three years ago, and is a huge fan of the band Morphine, so he created this dance floor remix of their track “The Other Side” for his DJ sets.

With the intention of keeping the original Morphine legacy alive along with the spirit of deceased lead singer Mark Sandman, the original members of the band have agreed to officially release this incredible remix, as every time Unders played it the reaction was incredible.

Already rated by Mixmag as one of the hottest tracks of the Summer in 2017, even though it had never even been released, this special remix of an American classic will surely take its listeners on a journey to “The Other Side”, where “life is better”.

Morphine was an Alternative Rock group from Boston which formed in 1989. Morphine’s unique sound combined blues and jazz elements with more traditional rock arrangements, and the lead singer Mark Sandman had a distinctively deep and laid-back tone. After five successful albums in the early '90s they disbanded after Mark Sandman tragically died on stage of a heart attack. The founding members reformed into the band Vapors of Morphine, maintaining much of the original style and sound.

With a slow, smouldering sound consisting of saxophones, soft percussion, two finger bass and beatnik-style poetry lyrics, the bands bluesy sound has been captured fully in Unders stunning rework.

The lyrics of the track talk of “crossing over to the other side” and this version pays homage to the original and celebrates the living achievements of Mark Sandman before he sadly passed away.

Created by Helia Jamali, the Artwork was influenced by the song lyrics, and is intended to be a visually stimulating journey to an unknown but familiar place “with the preacher's wife”.

Ijsbrand & Gert had always wanted to create balkan inspired music, and hence came the duo Stavroz. Beyond just sharing the same musical tastes, these two buddies bond over both being sound engineers (live for Ijs, studio for Gert), which makes them real "goldsmiths" behind each and every production (such can be seen in this short clip which presents their title 'The Ginning'). 
Their music is imprinted with original inspirations while keeping to a jazzy/burlesque influence, leaving little to be left displeased. The bridge, so it seems, borderlines between minimal and jazz-house.

The first title of the EP, 'The Ginning' is constructed around guitarist, Max Honckelinx. The track’s instrumental harmony is skilfully constructed by the duo as they borderline minimal and deep house.

The second original title of the EP, 'The Finishing' is merely a dialogue between a rhythmic stratospheric universe and the sax of Nathan Daems, well preserved from the first studio recording. The end result leaves us with 8 minutes of lyricism soaked in sophistication and technicality.

In regards to the remixes, Felkon, who has been presented several times before on the Délicieuse, takes on 'The Ginning' by including vocals which create a more dance-like ambiance. 
Britta Arnold, a legendary pioneer from Bar 25 and Katerholzig, worked on 'The Ginning' as well with Sascha Cawa. They delivered a version more obscure yet wickedly effective.

As for the remixes of 'The Finishing', Powel continues to captivate us while executing his deep and melancholic twists. He entirely redesigns the piece’s structure by retiring the "voice" of the sax. 
And then there’s our man, Viken Arman, who spins his version of 'The Finishing' by refiguring the rhythm pattern and adding a new dimension to the bass.

Our fellow Belgian "Stan Lee Cole" released his album and asked us to do a remix for his hit single "Separated". Since the track is utterly beautiful (and so is the video), we just couldn't say no. "Separated" won first prize in the Prestigious International Songwrting Contest, judged by a.o. Tom Waits and Suzanne Vega.

Our version is a little sunnier than the original, creating more a feeling of hope.
