Tim Reaper returns to Lobster Theremin with a weighty masterclass of all things old school jungle, rave and D&B. 

2020 has been a massive year for the rising London-based DJ/producer Tim Reaper, with an impressive output of twelves on labels such as 7th Storey Projects, Disc World & Repertoire, Beyond Electronix. On top of this, Reaper was also nominated in the ‘Breakthrough Producer’ category at this years DJ Mag awards, as well as the ‘Best Remix/Edit’ category. 2020 has paved the way for what is set to be a massive future from the versatile producer, his infectious brand of high energy jungle & D&B is making him the producer on everyones lips. 

His latest outing ‘Teletext’ EP for London based record label Lobster Theremin explores deep all things bass driven, head high rave breaks sit on top of euphoric vocals and synth patterns, creating a feel good masterpiece. Tim joins forces with long time friend & collaborator Devnull on two tracks, blending both of the producers individual sounds into a hybrid mash up, which works oh so good.

Lyon, France’s LB aka LABAT inaugurates his new imprint Poumpet Records this February with its first single, ‘Feel The Beat’, backed by a remix from Australia’s partiboi69.

Over the past seven years Strasbourg-born now Lyon-based, DJ, Producer and Live Act LB aka LABAT has been soul drenched, dusty House, Techno, Electro and Downtempo grooves via the likes of Wolf Music, Steel City Dance Discs, Groovedge Records and course his own Alélah Records run alongside Polow with a focus on cassette and vinyl releases. Here though we see LB aka LABAT open a new chapter in his career with the launch of his new imprint Poumpet Records which will be dropping a single every month throughout 2022 alongside remixes from some kindred spirits along the way.

To set the tone of Poumpet Records, LABAT launches with debut single ‘Feel The Beat’, a dynamic rave-tinged groove fuelled by hip-house vocal chants, crunchy, organic drums and an amalgamation of jazzy keys, wandering strings and airy atmospherics throughout its near eight-minute duration.

Mutual Pleasure and Unprotected Records artist partiboi69 also steps in on remix duties to kick things off, upping the energy levels even more with a robust, broken rhythm and snaking arpeggio bass hooks ebbing and flowing amongst fragments of the original’s vocal lines and ethereal pads.

Hailing from Vienna, Austria, Steve Michael has been an active participant in the local electronic music scene for nearly a decade. He has contributed to some of the most influential event series, including Hausgemacht and Kein Sonntag Ohne Techno. His latest endeavor is a multi-art platform known as Vienna's Filthiest, which also functions as a record label.

Steve excels in mixing genres, blending various styles of house and breakbeat across multiple publications. His passion lies in exploring music, studying styles from both the past and present, and fusing new ideas to create synthesized forms of new songs that are perfect for dancing.

His latest release, "POSITIVE ATTITUDE" features a heavy piano riff accompanied by a driving hard house groove and bassline. Baraka has always been synonymous with "lucky star". And it is true that you can find some of that in this duo. In 2020, as the world prepared to go into lockdown, Cristofeu (DJ and producer) and sa+ga (DJ, singer, poet, author) got together to compose a series of tracks featuring poetic vocals, acid sounds and synthetic layers. You can feel the influence of trance, trip-hop, drum'n'bass and artists such as Prodigy, Massive Attack, and even Björk. But it is on stage that Baraka's music really comes into its own. Capable of transforming a concert hall into a dancefloor or building up a club’s energy to the level of a punk show, the duo electrifies every venue they play at: from the Berghain/Panorama Bar (Berlin) to the Trabendo (Paris), from Positive Education festival (Saint-Étienne) to Boiler Room. Łukasz Seliga needs little introduction to anyone even roughly following Poland’s dance and electronic underground, as his contributions – as a live performer, producer, remixer or DJ – embellished the better part of its story. Between his solo endeavours under the slg moniker, and projects such as Casiopepe or Seltron 400, he has long traversed genres and sounds, aptly and joyfully, always staying true to his distinct musical vision rather than being prompted by periodic shifts of fancy.

On Sideways, his newest EP outing for Trance-Atlantyk, Łukasz appears under his own name – Seliga – for the first time, thus restating his identity and underlining the honesty of his craft. In a time when dance music tends to be driven increasingly by nostalgia, Seliga takes but a sip, ultimately eschewing it. As a result, the music we hear is more of a direct expression of his own abiding purpose – a lived, rather than re-lived experience, an auditory utopia, sung in a language the artist is deeply anchored in, but whose expressive qualities he seeks to enhance, and not simply exploit.

Across the EP’s four tracks we are treated to impeccable, entrancing house riddims – masterfully executed, with subtle, yet meaningful nods to dub and ambient, and echoing inspirations such as The Orb, Andrew Weatherall’s remix work and the early Warp catalogue. Driving and soothing, kinetic and cordial, refreshing and utterly danceable, these four tunes succeed in conveying a unique sense of the melanphoric – and this is precisely what makes for their delicious seligability.

France’s Olympe4000 joins forces with DJ Physical this June to release their new ‘Hack Me I’m Famous’ EP, perfectly blending together their individual high octane styles across five original cuts.

In recent years French producer and DJ Olympe4000 has been steadily etching her mark on the contemporary electronic music scene through her residency radio show on Rinse France, festival appearances and output on her Adrenaline Quality imprint. Here she returns to her own label once again, this time round though, collaborating with DJ Physical, notably known for releases on Shall Not Fade’s Lost Palms sub-label, 1Ø PILLS MATE, Molekül and Life In Patterns among others.

Opening the EP is ‘Sex Symbol Sex Target’, perfectly setting the tone for the EP through a combination of ethereal pads, swinging breaks, murky acid bass and crisp, saturated percussion. Title-track ‘Hack Me I’m Famous’ follows, laying down stuttering trance like melodies and airy atmospherics atop a bouncy bass groove and bumpy drums. ‘Name Drop Me’ is up next, shifting gear back to a frenzied acid lines at its core alongside sporadic amen breaks, cinematic strings and a sturdy rhythm section.

‘Free Access To Nothing’ then sees the duo veer into deeper realms with delicate synth textures and twitchy arpeggios floating atop choppy bass stabs and heavily swung percussion. ‘Out Of The Race’ then rounds out the release, fully embracing a jungled tinged aesthetic this time courtesy of roots reggae vocal lines, heavy doses of sub bass and the genre’s iconic shuffled drum breaks.

Following well-regarded outings on Phonica Records and Wolf Music, and a superb "Many Shades Of House" compilation released this year, Lausanne-based Lea Lisa joins Smallville Records this June with ‘Poem For The Lost Souls’, accompanied by remixes from Kuniyuki and Session Victim as a special Double-12“ package.

For these tracks, Lea Lisa has worked with several musicians in the studio to transform the warmth and organic feel of real instruments into her musical universe. The original mix of ‘Poem For The Lost Souls’ leads, a jazzy house journey that ebbs and flows through fluttering flute melodies, ethereal chords, wandering piano and funk-infused bass grooves running atop organic percussion and disco tinged drums. On the B Side, the ‘Broken Mix’ follows, as the name would suggest, rhythmically shifting focus towards off-kilter drum breaks alongside the other melodies and again - all the ingredients that make a classic house track.

Opening the C-side on record 2, acclaimed Japanese artist and Mule Musiq regular Kuniyuki steps up to rework ‘Poem For The Lost Souls’, in typical fashion the Sapporo born producer extracts the core grooves from the original and shapes it into something uniquely his own, laden with warmth, soul and dynamics. The duo Session Victim then round out the release on Side D with their interpretation, fusing together the original synth melodies with their own amalgamation of intricately intertwined keys and atmospherics, underpinned by a shuffled rhythm section and bouncy low-end drive.

It’s coming with a gatefold cover-artwork by Stefan Marx for a cherry-blossom glimpse of Yoyogi Park in Tokyo.

New York based artist Ma Sha has unveiled her latest sonic venture, through her ‘Pull to Stop’ EP, marking her debut release through Steel City Dance Discs. 

Having founded her own record label, Kindergarten, Ma Sha’s influence, namely within New York, spans further than the four walls of the club. Her sound is defined by a strong sense of unpredictability; the driving force of her latest project,‘Pull to Stop’; a four track serving of mind-warping, club-ready hitters. 

‘Pull to Stop’ is an EP with a chameleon-like character, as Ma Sha brings us into her seemingly ever-evolving sonic state. Within the project, the producer flexes her stylistic versatility, smoothly transitioning between genres, while maintaining an unchanging identity to her sound. For our next release of 2024 Command D, the dynamic Australian artist residing on Gadigal land, returns to Pure Space with his next EP, "New Devices."

"New Devices" is a testament to resilience and innovation, instigated by the theft of his laptop and loss of production files in motion. The need to start the EP journey afresh led to a subsequent shift in his music production methods. As Command D explains, "The tracks came from the production of my first live set and are a representation of my workflow during this time. Most elements were made using a more hands-on/'live take' approach."

Opening the EP, "Swallow" captivates with its low slung bass and swirling percussion. Let the dubbed out synthesis warm you as you drift into the abyss, with the four to the floor beat keeping you grounded through the dance.

Next up is "Madman," a heady and energising cut that continues Command D’s exploration into deep dance grooves. The staunch synthesis keeps your head down until the dub chords lift you up. One fitting for sunrise or sunset, up to you really..

"CG Phrase" introduces more intensity released only as the swirling atmospheres lift. The track toys with tension as it pulls you deeper into the sonic vortex.

The EP culminates with "Heavy Clouds," a cathartic and heavenly composition that offers a moment of introspective rapture. Its ethereal melodies and soothing rhythms provide a serene contrast to the preceding tracks, closing the EP on a contemplative note.

A fresh release out of Manchester this summer sees two of the city's mainstays, Obeka and Left, Right & Centre, team up for the first time ever to pack a fiery punch with a ferocious 6-track EP. Featuring a guest appearance from Bryte as well as a spicy remix from Bitter Babe for good measure, the release is a real statement of intent from the label and producer alike.

Hailing from Bermuda, Obeka makes up one-third of the Me Gusta Collective, an event series championing global sounds in Manchester, bringing world-renowned DJs, producers, and musicians to the UK for truly unique showcases. Obeka draws direct influence from Bermuda with this release, channeling the island's energy and influence into his production, particularly through the use of percussion and rhythmic qualities that really shine throughout. Contrasting this with the makeup of the city he now resides in, the "Commence" EP uses the disparity between these two environments, alongside his personal connection to both, as the backbone of the music within it.

“Badman Silo” introduces the release with a tension-building, club-ready hit that infuses pitched-up electronic influences with organic percussion sounds and chopped vocals to really set the tone. “Ya Betta” is, however, the highlight, featuring the unmistakable sounds of Bryte, whose call-and-response-type vocals create an invitation for true dance expressionism. The final track features Bitter Babe on the remix of the same track, an artist whose Colombian flair combined with contemporary club styles has put her on the map in recent years. Her contribution here uses that Latin influence alongside Obeka’s Bermudan style for a drum-laden hit ready to destroy dancefloors everywhere.

CYRK is a live show and studio project by Sammy Goossens and Pascal Hetzel. They mix up a love of Italo, Detroit-influenced techno, acid and electro on cult labels like Running Back, Polari and Lone Romantic. This one sees them link with Hard Ton, aka Wawashi Deejay and heavy metal singer Max. They have been leading the way in Italo disco and Chicago fusions since 2008, often with anthemic vocal tracks that come with a proudly oversized queer persona.

'Take Me To The Top' is a superb collision of worlds—throwback 80s synth sounds, crashing drums, and Italo arps are all topped off with sensual vocals. The results are raw and physical but steeped in heartfelt emotion and brought to life with plenty of retro-future colours.

Remixer Jorkes is a force on the European underground who has the queer community at the centre of his work. He has released passionate house and disco on labels like Robert Johnson, Permanent Vacation and Freeride Millenium. The remix is a slightly more paired back trip infused with pixelated chord magic and warm, heartfelt grooves that cruise through cosmic worlds with style and grace.

After two successful VA Releases, Apranik Records returns with their Debut EP "Polychrome," by label co-founders Nesa Azadikhah and AIDA. Brandon Knocke is a Portland-based musician who may be more familiar to you as @Body-san. Knocke has released music under a number of different aliases throughout the years, perhaps most notably as Discoverer, on the dreamier and more experimental side of the spectrum. His music as Body-San has a similar flavour to it, keeping that same West Coast haziness but generally in a more house-leaning direction. With two fantastic long format cassette tapes released via 100% Silk and 1080p, as well as a couple of singles over the past two years, Body-san is back with his first 12" which will be released by East London's Lo Recordings, a label that has quietly been around for 20 years, releasing music from a very wide variety of artists.

"Pacific Reasons" is a four track EP chock-full of sun-kissed melodies, warm chords and crisp percussion. From the twilight vibes of 'Topaz Chalice' to the meditative feelings of 'Central Casting' and 'Liquid Entrance', Brandon Knocke's music continues to evoke emotion while still being dance floor appropriate. The title track and our premiere today, B1 'Pacific Reasons' starts off very subdued with some airy chords and hazy atmospheres. The drums and bass act more like supportive elements in this slowly developing moody number rather than being up front and centre. Vocal melodies and synth lines emerge from the mist, like the sun peaking in through early morning fog until we get a chance to bask in the full warmth of its rays, but only for a brief moment as it is once again submerged in the clouds.

Dream Raw Recordings, self-proclaimed underground label for all kind of fresh dreamy, hazy, lo-fi, raw house, are gearing up to release a V/A comp of gems from a staggering, 36 artists. Faithful to the motto, “too many good tracks,” DRR decided it’d make sense to organize a digital release full of tunes from artists you may already follow, and a bunch you most likely do not. The collection of tracks is wide ranging, spanning mellow house full of dreamy pads and emotional detuned lo-fi pianos to tape recorded acid jams and jungle.

An immediate standout from the pack, Belfast producer Wallabee’s “Feel” features a dramatic, vintage sounding piano loop that creeps over deep drums and under signature lo-fi hats and snares. Adding more fuel to the fire, a heavily reverbed sample of Timbaland’s famous adlibs on Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody” is the perfect complement to an already tripped out track. If you were up on your stuff, you would have heard this track already. Five months ago, Wallabee self-released it via his SoundCloud page. Having smartly signed the track, Dream Raw adds an excellent track to an already impressive collection of tunes. A dig through Wallabee’s discography shows a penchant for deep lo-fi house, glistening pianos, and heavy reverb. One could easily get lost in more than one of his productions. Hint, hint…someone should sign his other track, “2K17.” For many, this will be a nice intro to an unknown producer, and we’ll certainly be watching out for Wallabee’s next releases.

Axe on Wax readies the second release from their sub-label PNP and as we’ve come to expect from them it’s a quality V/A stocked full of bangin’ edits. Fans of lo-fi, disco house, and deep house will all find something worthwhile here, and these will certainly be receiving club play from many of your favorite DJs.

In addition to tracks from Slamb, Turk Turkelton, Fede Lng, and gutinstinct, the PNP 002 features a track from the 18 year old German slugger DJ Swagger (soundcloud). Swagger, having previously released on Natural Sciences and E-Beamz, is in top form here, delivering an energetic track with a cheeky sample, buttery smooth chords, and a classic 909 drum workout. This isn’t ground breaking work, but compared to more “basic” lo-fi disco edits this proves to be something special. Swagger’s choice of sample was key here, and his manipulation of the female vocal is the cherry on top of an already solid record. If you’ve been following his progress as a producer, you already know that Swagger is a versatile musician; he’s released everything from lo-fi house to deep house to breaks to acid and techno, a testament to the young German’s matured musical talent. Keep an eye on this kid.

Following in the scuffed up, skate shoe footsteps of many of this year's breakout producers, Slamb (soundcloud) came on our radar after appearing at the top of Axe on Wax’s PNP 002 — a Bolting Bits favorite and thoroughly of the times V/A compilation of cheeky and sleazy edits and reinterpretations presented. Once again holding on to his A1 spot, Slamb is now debuting on Whyte Numbers’ (remember, sometimes Blaq Numbers) 4th release alongside fellow up-and-comers Tilman, Enliven, and DJ Psychiatre.

All four tracks here are perfectly in tune with the current movement of rough, DJ-ready tracks with well enough intrigue for the casual listener. With “I Want Your”, we’re treated to Slamb’s knack for unearthing catchy samples and combining them with dusty, in your face grooves. Nothing’s hiding in this straightforward belter and it comes to life as a perfectly suited club track arranged to dance-floor perfection (well, almost perfect — we’ll let the listeners and DJs decide about the surprise fade out at the end of the track).

On "You will feel better I promise" Tilman goes toe-to-toe with Slamb for banging, feel-good edit while dialing up the crunch factor somewhere between an old cassette and your Aunt's forgotten (and dusty) record collection. The B-side tones things down ever so slightly with Enliven smart and synthy, "Waitsome" and DJ Psychiatre's perfect closer of a track, "Let me tell u".

With his shift to a more deeper sound in the past few years @DeejayAstral has crafted a dark and brooding style reminiscent of earlier house and techno. On “Duality” from his new Pack the Pipe split EP on @whos-susan with @Fede-Lng, the Berlin based producer creates a moody atmosphere with elements from both the UK and German scenes. 

The bassline drifts and drifts across the track, leaving space for the warmth and pulse of the kick and hi-hats. Over time it loosens more and finds moments to fill the space in between other sounds with its depth. The main sample builds slowly with a tunnel reverb that bleeds out behind the drums and melodies while vinyl grooves and noise move in and out of the left and right channels of the stereo field. While the layering and sounds present interesting sonic palettes, it comes as no surprise from a DJ known to play with the likes of Baltra and Mall Grab.
 
All the while the main vocal sample slides in and around the other elements of the track. As is tradition within lo-fi house tracks the sample manages to evoke both somber and uplifting emotions all at once. It matches the brooding feel of the bassline while also reaching the heights of the main refrain. With subtle reverb giving it the sense of desperation and tension it cuts through the mix and compliments the songs main melodic presence. As he teases another drop at the end of the track you’re unsure of whether the person talking to themselves in the bathroom mirror made it out to conquer their adversity.

When it comes to producing dance-floor ready edits, few are doing it better than Tilman and Johannes Albert. Having started the label Fine together back in 2016, these German-based lads have used their imprint to share their takes on some of disco's greatest tunes from the past. In their upcoming release titled The Weekender, the two have decided to join forces once again by coming out with a 4-track EP that will have DJs around the world chomping at the bit to rinse them out in their sets.

The lead track from the EP is called "Beach Reach," and was produced by Mr. Albert. Fans of the British funk band Delegation will instantly recognize this song as an edit of their original "Stand Up Reach For The Sky." Johannes is quite respectful in his rendition of the tune, leaving a lot of its key elements intact. Instead, Johannes chooses to up the intensity by using expertly selected guitar riffs and percussion to create looped melodies which transform the song into an unadulterated groove!

LA-based music company, Godmode, is known for taking way-left artists and bringing them slightly more to the center.  After breaking Shamir and Yaeji, the label is back with their latest signing, Channel Tres. Channel grew up in the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles, and his music is a clear representation of the surly attitude of West Coast rap reimagined with the stylings of Detroit house. Fans of Galcher Lustwerk would be wise to check out this project. Similar to the NYC legend, Channel’s voice is effortlessly deep, expertly processed, and a perfect compliment to his deep, sultry instrumentals.

“Top Down” oozes swagger. While a Paranoid London-esque acid bassline rips through ethereal pads, Channel croons, “bet you ain't never heard shit like this from the block before.” He’s not completely wrong. While he’s not the first to champion a sound like this, he certainly has few modern peers. Aside from how dope the song is, I really appreciate the emphasis he places on individuality as an artist. He says, “never let the scene choose you. Never met a man this cool.” For me, it’s essential for a musician to be original, to believe in the uniqueness of their music, and to not conform to the standards set by a saturated scene. Going forward, I hope Channel sticks to his words. It’s not everyday you hear a debut this polished and full of a variety of influences. I’ll be waiting to hear these tunes at my NYC after-hours, but until then, I’m about to cut the top off my Saturn and slow-ride through Brooklyn. Here’s your invite.

London powerhouse Slothboogie is gearing up to drop the fourth installment in their SBEDITZ series, this time with an EP of slammers from international man of mystery, Joe Cleen. This time around, the Berlin based producer has delivered four raw and ready cuts in various styles. We’ve got serious disco heat (one soaked in 80’s nightclub neon), a glorious piano jam laced with dubbed out gospel vocals, shuffling drum machine hats and a pimped out G-Funk synth, and ‘​The Fun Part​’, a bubblin’ bass funk groover filled with crisp percussion and jazzy Rhodes.

‘Give You All I Got’ is the perfect opening track for an amazingly cohesive project, a certified disco monster with infectious brass, erotic vocals and huge space toms reworked to launch any dancefloor into the stratosphere! Steadily swung percussion rides nicely in front of a fat bottomed bassline, while Joe takes us to church with a sensual vocal that glides smoothly over the instrumental. ‘Give You All I Got’ keeps the energy contained, and it moves through four minutes with a graceful swagger that’ll surely capture the attention of eager dancers. Honestly, I just watched the new Quincy Jones documentary on Netflix and this EP sounds like something he’d like. That’s saying a lot.

Ben Gomori, label head of Monologues Records and Stern Edits, might be one of the busiest men in the industry today. When he's not providing us with the freshest dance music through his two labels, Ben can be seen spending his "leisurely" time hosting podcasts, radio shows, and video series like Turned On, Monologues and RecordReplay. If that wasn't enough, Ben puts on club night fundraisers for Help Refugees and the highly esteemed album listening sessions Pitchblack Playback. We honestly do not know where the man finds the time, but he does.

Given his absurd work rate, we were not surprised to learn back in July that Ben Gomori also produces under the previously anonymous moniker G. Markus. Mr. Gomori's reasoning for starting the project was "[...] to make deeper, freakier, trackier stuff than I was known for under my own name. It was a breath of fresh air starting from a blank canvas and sending music to labels anonymously with no preconceptions, having no social media and so on."

Whether he's releasing music under his own name or G. Markus, one can argue that Ben has a knack for making edits that rivals any of his contemporaries today. And this unique skill is on full display throughout his latest track titled "Red E," in which he takes on an 80's classic. Using the infectious vocal sample as a centerpiece, Ben chooses to pair it with an equally catchy assortment of lively piano house melodies and cheeky synths that are reminiscent of greats like Kerri Chandler.

Coming as the penultimate track on the upcoming various artists compilation EP from Nerang Recordings, Freaky Friends Vol. 1, Berlin-based Australian DJ Swagger’s “The Phone Talky,” serves as the compilation’s searing climax. This compilation is the first of a new series by the label showcasing the talents of six exciting producers from across the globe. Its title serves as a fitting encapsulation of the general spirit of these tracks-- raw, unadulterated, down-and-dirty dancefloor anthems. Despite its hair-raising opening drum-line and head-spinning BPM, Swagger’s cut is surprisingly measured in its bravado. As the salacious, over-the-phone vocal sample emerges, a cushy, lush synth and gorgeous piano melody gently steer the track away from complete hedonistic abandon. This juxtaposition works alarmingly well, as Swagger expertly works more traditional rave elements into the fold, such as turntable scratches, chopped vocals, and handclaps. The track has all the workings of a peak-time banger, yet the overwhelming feeling it leaves leans more towards self-assurance and composure in its overt sexuality, rather than frenetic, reckless revelry.The track’s appeal to get down is conveyed concisely in its vocal sample-- a woman soliciting a man she deems worthy of her and her body. As a whole, the track emulates this confidence and frank treatment of sexual desires. There’s no room for beating around the bush, no time for prevaricating, Swagger suggests. Just let the music do the talking.
