Oh no not another Prince edit!!!!

Well look, I've never done one before and after finally watching the 'Sign O' The Times' concert film, I wanted a version of the live version of this track to play in my sets and I couldn't find any online and so at least this is an original idea. I've given it some very simple embellishments which I hope are not cause for sacrilege. Hopefully useful wherever you're playing this summer.

The final track, Nine Palms has a real quirky, almost broken beat feel to it with its high-hat ride pattern and punchy bass drum. A wickedly twisted analogue organ riff is quickly introduced, which is cleverly used as both a rhythm device and the melodic platform that sets up the whole track. Lex & Locke seem to be total masters of a ‘free-style funky synth lead’, and we’re treated to another slice of this particularly tasty pie in ‘Nine Palms’. Whereas Balandra is the late-night stake-out, Nine Palms is the final act where Lex & Locke high five each other following another successful bust.

As usual, there's no confirmation as to who is behind this edition of the Semi-Skimmed Edits series, but as the previous volumes were the work of scalpel fiend James Greenwood, it's likely he's made these reworks, too. There's plenty to admire throughout, from the grandiose horn arrangements, starry instrumentation and club-ready jazz-funk grooves of 'Tea For Two', and the driving, heavily orchestrated disco-funk hedonism of 'Boogie Drunk', to the Chic-style guitar licks and sweaty drums of closing cut 'You Control Me', whose swirling, filtered breakdowns will do a terrific job in spiking energy levels out on the dancefloor.

It's been three years since the last instalment in the "Giant Cuts Presents" series, so this fiery and funky four-tracker from Mexican hero Hotmood is long overdue. He's naturally in fine form, brilliantly joining the dots between loopy disco edits, James Brown and groovy deep house on tasty opener "The Rhythm Is There", before serving up a slightly deeper flavour of disco-house on the dewy-eyed bounce of "My Darling (Dina)". Doc Jam does his best Tiger & Woods impression on his loopy and life-affirming house revision of "The Rhythm Is There", while closing cut "Tropical Space" is an inspired fusion of jazz-funk, disco-house and evocative tropical jazz samples bringing  the summer vibes for the cold winter days.

@djduckcomb unearthed this 7" and played it on KCRW a few months back.  We ripped it at my place and did an edit together.  I love this version so much, the playing is inspired, singing is fun, and love the synth section in the middle.  The original recording is poor so we did a lot to restore as best we could, reworked the intro and outro and extended some sections, otherwise no added production- classic re-edit style
