He started off as a software engineer building artificial intelligence systems in Los Angeles.  He gave that up and joined the Gentoo Linux open source project for a number of years, during which he saw adoption of open source in general–and Gentoo Linux specifically– grow by leaps and bounds, disrupting well-established commercial players.
