Michael Mayer and German techno go hand in hand. In the late 90s Mayer became one of the co-founders of Kompakt, the Cologne institution that’s widely regarded as one of the world’s most important techno labels.

Outside of his quintessential imprint he’s also earned his stripes as a DJ, with an ear for melody and a flair for extended marathon sets helping to define his 20-year career.

He’s also been a staple of Farringdon history, with his Room One appearances dating back as early as 2003 and a legendary edition in our mix series. Mayer has played the club over 20 times since then, but one of the most memorable remains his Room One set from back in April 2012.

Closing out the room after a set of wizardry from Craig Richards, Mayer stepped up to deliver 3.5 hours of the warm, luscious house that’s been at the heart of his 20-year career.

With his return to Room One happening just a few days from now, we dug through our archives to find Mayer’s set from that night to share here in anticipation.

Habt ihr schon mal am Fuße eines Berges gestanden und euch gedacht, dass er majestätisch in seiner Größe ist? Er erdrückt einem mit seiner bloßen Präsenz und schaut aus den Wolken auf uns herab. Wie ein Gigant, der unbezwingbar scheint, stellt er sich uns in den Weg und scheint überhaupt nicht Notiz von uns zu nehmen.
Ein verrückter Gedanke ergreift in solchen Momenten Besitz von einigen unter uns. Dieses Gefühl der puren Abenteuerlust. Gepackt vom Ehrgeiz wird das nötigste in einen kleinen Rucksack gezwängt und der Weg hinauf zum Ende des Riesen eilig auf einer Karte markiert. Schnell gewinnt man an Höhe und ehe man sich versieht, wird der Weg unter den Füßen schmaler. Es geht bald nur noch vertikal vorwärts und unter einem ist nichts außer ein schauriger Abgrund. An der Wand hängend, durchströmt pures Adrenalin den Körper und der Rausch macht höhenblind. Wie weit es nach unten geht ist egal, was zählt, ist wie weit man noch nach oben kommen kann. Mitten in diesem Nichts ohne sichtbares Ende, wo Verzweiflung Nahe liegen würde, ergreift einen pures Erstaunen. Ein schier unendlicher Blick hinein in die Welt öffnet sich einem. Die Grenzen des Horizonts scheinen sich zu dehnen und das Auge zum ersten Mal frei zu sein. Man genießt den Ausblick und beginnt innerlich zu ruhen. 
Doch nur für einen kurzen Augenblick. Dann erinnert der Körper uns daran, dass wir nicht Muskeln wie Arni haben und unsere Kraft endlich ist. Mit steigender Höhe findet man immer weniger Zeit die Ferne zu genießen, da die schwindende Energie unsere ganze Aufmerksamkeit in Anspruch nimmt. Ein gefährlicher Automatismus schleicht sich ein und kontrolliert uns. Nur der Wille treibt uns noch voran. Er ist unser stiller Begleiter bis zum Ende. Kurz vor der totalen Erschöpfung, dann die Erlösung. Der einst so unbezwingbar anmutende Unbekannte offenbart uns sein letztes und schönstes Geheimnis. Pure Freude erfüllt den Geist und die Sinne. 
Auf genau so eine unglaubliche Reise möchte uns auch unser heutiger Gast Sander Ghielen mitnehmen. Seine deep story wird euch in einen Rausch versetzen, der euch bis zum Schluss packt und immer wenn ihr denkt es geht gar nicht schöner, nimmt der Mix eine Wendung und gewährt euch einen weiteren atemberaubenden Moment. Sowie der Berg, der euch mit jedem Höhenmeter einen weiteren unvergesslichen Ausblick beschert, bis sich euch am Ende das große Ganze enthüllt und ihr in Glückseligkeit schwelgt.

Wie eine FataMorgana erscheint der heutig Podcast vom jungem Künstler Vincent Gericke aus Düsseldorf. Vor ca. 5 Jahren hat Vincent angefangen an seinen ersten Sets zu basteln. Durch sein Studium hatte er aber dann erst mal wieder wenig Zeit zum Musik machen, erst nach seinem Umzug nach Russland 2016 hat er wieder richtig Zeit sich in die Musik zu vertiefen. Das war auch in etwa der Zeitpunkt wo ich über sein erstes Set gestolpert bin „Today's Tale｜Parallels“. Er ist ein wahrer Meister in der Disziplin Storytelling. Jedes Set ist für sich ein kleiner musikalischer Roman mit Höhen und Tiefen. 

Auch seine ersten eigenen Produktionen lassen noch viel erwarten in den nächsten Jahren. Nach seinen diversen Remixen und Edits unter anderem sei hier „Madre Selva“ erwähnt, hat er nun auch seine erste EP „Lucid Dreams“ bei den Schweizern Wildfang Music veröffentlicht … ein ziemlicher Knaller ;-)

Vincent viele lieben Dank für diese wunderbare Geschichte in Musik. Und meinen Hörern wünsch ich wie immer eine wunderbare musikalische Reise und genießt den Sommer.

@EtappKyle’s first full Ostgut Ton EP release sees the Ukrainian-born, Berlin-based Berghain resident emphasizing the connection between spaces, while avoiding Techno’s overt intergalactic clichés. By partially linking to his ‘Continuum EP’ (Unterton, 2016), the results are four tracks of pristine, sci-fi minimalism, propelled by Ambient synths and percussive explosions in distant skies – more utopian than dystopian.

Cooked up with a more melodic vibe and fusing elements of house and techno, Dense & Pika’s latest outing on Drumcode offers something different compared to their previous work. There is still that vintage feel to each of the tracks with analogue sounds and arrangements born and developed from experimental studio jams. Indeed, ‘Suki’ heavily utilizes the distinct harmonic tones of the Dave Smith Prophet 8 keyboard. While ‘Little Sun’ - A staple of D&P performances over the last three months - delivers a more classic Drumcode sound. ‘Lanky’ closes out the release with an infectious slab of wonderfully wonked-out raw funk.

NKR028: 01. Noisekick - FHRITP (Nekrosystem RMX)

Tale Of Us present a new collaboration with Vaal for the sixth release on their Afterlife label. Three years after they teamed up for ‘Concur’ and began to tour together, the trio return with their most anthemic offering yet. Vaal’s hauntingly-beautiful and instantly-recognisable vocals are the centre-piece on ‘Monument’, building on the style of her Wander To Hell EP (AL002). The drums and shimmering synth lines are moody and uplifting in the way Tale Of Us have made their own, arranged perfectly for the psychedelic breakthrough.

On the flip side, ‘The Hangar’ takes a different approach to equally devastating effect. It pumps with added urgency and a thunderous, steely bassline lunges out from the low-end. Designed for large soundsystems and big rooms, ‘The Hangar’ finds Tale Of Us and Vaal at their most direct and it’s something to behold.

Barnt and Stephan Bodzin, two artists whose stand-out performances at recent Afterlife events have made them firm favourites with the crowds, are tapped for the remixes (AL007). They both take on ‘Monument’, Barnt opting for a rolling, percussive direction and Bodzin more ethereal and transportive.
