Restless and pensive, looking out from a balcony at an unlit street enveloped in complete silence, Sergio found himself drowning in the hollow night, and in an attempt to combat the loneliness, started composing. “I guess this melody is what I would tell the moon if I could talk to her.”

As is custom for Sergio’s pieces, The Moon Song has an instant sense of nostalgic tenderness — it is a song about sleepless nights, glasses of wine, and unread books next to an unmade bed. Written during that part of the night in which everyone else is sleeping, the piece is an intimate affair; a gentle and at times heavy left hand is contrasted by a trickling, tethering right, playing with altering intensity but immaculate emotion. There’s a tense determination lingering beneath every note, an unanswered question floating in the air, only to be left hanging, as the piece drifts into the comfort of the decision to simply give up for now, and try again tomorrow.

The Moon Song releases on the 14th of May, featuring artwork by French artist Inès Panizzi.

The Moon Song

Inspired by the magic of long summer nights, Swedish artist Sofia Nystrand, the person behind Vargkvint, has created her own version of my piece Pomegranate – a track originally released as part of Postcards, the double-single I published last year on limited edition 7-inch vinyl. 

To celebrate the first anniversary of Postcards, we are releasing this rework through New York record label Sonder House, featuring artwork by Jordan Amy Lee.

My double single "Despedida / Viaje a Cusco" is now available on Spotify, Apple Music, and all the other usual places via the link in my bio and stories. This little project is dedicated to my parents and my sister, who I haven't seen in over two years. It is a reminder of what we have been through as well as a little thank you for all the sacrifices they have made for me to be here today. 

Despedida, the first piece, is about our last day together. It is explaining to my 9-year-old sister that I am not abandoning her and that I will do my best to see her soon, it is hugging my parents and grandparents for the last time until who knows when –because if there's something that these times have taught us is how uncertain life is– and it is crying silently on the line of security at the airport because I miss them already. 

Viaje a Cusco, the second piece, is about the farewell trip we made to Cusco before my departure to Spain. One of the activities we have always enjoyed doing as a family is traveling, and that last trip is the one I hold closer to my heart. I remember hiking together to magical places such as Machu Picchu or the Rainbow Mountain, finding an old French piano in a tiny, cozy restaurant, walking through the lovely streets of San Blas, riding the train to Aguas Calientes, visiting the Maras Salt Mines, and much more.

This piece is a reminder of the adventures I have experienced with my partner along the years: the cassette we released together back in 2017 when we first met, the postcards we collected during our trips around Spain, Germany, Austria and Hungary, various small objects we encountered in diverse flea markets, museums, and antique stores, and other meaningful items that evoke our precious memories together.

Flores secas en un jarrón hecho a mano

Barranco is a small, lovely district in Lima, Peru, known for its artistic and bohemian atmosphere. I started frequenting its neighborhoods around the time I began my music studies at university. I remember visiting with Jose Antonio the home of Chilean poet Pancho Casas, eating lunch and drinking wine on his balcony with a view to the pacific ocean while listening to Chabuca Granda on YouTube, and then the three of us going to exhibitions at fancy art galleries. There was a beautiful cafe called Bisetti, where I tried french press, chemex and cold brew for the first time, which made me fall in love with coffee, but that is a story for another day. 

I remember, too, spending an entire summer with Paula attending an art performance workshop where we met the most peculiar people. I would often go to Burrito Bar with Estefanía and order vegetarian tacos —the best ones in the city— and lemonade, and then walk together around Barranco, exploring its shops. That is how we came across El GATO TULIPÁN, my favorite place in the world. Owned by Patricio and Pilar, it is an art gallery, cafe, music venue, and bar, all at once, and it is full of cats. I played my first show ever there, as well as my last one before moving to Europe. I worked there for a couple of years, too, which allowed me to meet some lovely humans from around the world and to live beautiful experiences, all of that while serving coffee and passion fruit (maracuyá) juice.

Maracuyá / Barranco

This piece is dedicated to Otto and Elsa, the incredibly talented musicians in my family that shaped the road I walk on.

Otto was my grandpa (from my mom’s side), and Elsa, his sister, is my great-aunt. My grandpa only saw me play piano once, during a classical music recital when I was around twelve years old. Elsa, on the other hand, is the person that guided me as a pianist and composer until the day I left Peru. Otto was a natural genius that played for diverse orchestras and bands, from salsa to jazz, and released various amazing records. My great-aunt is a talented multidisciplinary artist, classically-trained pianist, and the most inspiring teacher I have ever had. They have completely different styles, personalities, and life stories,  but there is a piece that I know both of them love: La Comparsa by Ernesto Lecuona. I love it, too, and hope to learn how to play it one day. Until then, this is my gift to them.

Canción para Otto y Elsa

This song, which I wrote with my dear friend @Lo-fang, is dedicated to Seraphina, my partner, with whom I have learned to love selflessly. She is a soft ray of sun during a spring afternoon, a foggy autumn morning, my moon and ocean, my home.

About this precious collaboration with Lo-Fang: Our paths crossed in Valencia, Spain, a few years ago, when the world was a bit different. I remember with clarity the day I visited his studio to improvise together. It was such a beautiful experience that it only felt natural to consider collaborating at some point. One day, while working on my new album, I wrote a piece that I felt was asking for something different. So, I sent it to him. He wrote the lyrics, sang them, and played violoncello too, taking the song to a whole new dimension.

Can I read life as a book?

In between composing, writing, rehearsing, and recording, I have been improvising a lot, and this track is the result of one of those moments. It is very different from what I am working on but, somehow, it holds my essence, and it makes me feel well. Instead of letting it disappear along with many other pieces that I never share with others, I have decided to publish it in celebration of #pianoday2018. I hope you enjoy it.

Fryderyk (Piano Day 2019)

Prelude is the first of a series of stand-alone singles that will be released during the first half of 2020 in collaboration with New York-based record label Sonder House. This piece marks a new beginning  on Sergio’s musical adventure —a more personal, thoughtful one— and is accompanied by a series of illustrations created by multidisciplinary designer Ryan Carl exploring topics such as interconnectedness, emptiness, and freedom through the use of simple structures and patterns. The cover art, just like the music, is a journey from beginning to middle to end, everything fading into a greater point of clarity and then fading back out again.

In a contemplative exploration on solitude, Sergio Díaz De Rojas has delved into a nostalgic state of mind after moving from Peru to Spain, leaving friends and family behind for a new chapter of his life. Various late nights by the piano led to the creation of a softly sorrowful tribute to one of his favourite composers, Fryderyk Chopin.

The project got its title from Sergio’s fascination of old postcards to be found while slowly strolling through a quiet flea market, lending a vivid visual for the wistful sense of (dis)connection apparent in the two pieces. Porcelain, beautifully fragile, has a solemn intensity in its movement, flowing with the grace and concentration of a dancer, easily evoking a sense of lonesome mindfulness. Pomegranate is equally graceful but harbouring a hint of sensuality; it beckons and moves away, slow-burning but relentlessly passionate.

Listening to Peruvian pianist and composer Sergio Díaz De Rojas feels like waking up with soft sunlight on your face. His songs are raw and soft, like terracotta and honey, and flow through the world like a tranquil river. 

With over twenty million streams worldwide, several concerts around Europe and South America, and collaborations with record labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, 7K!, and LEITER Verlag, Sergio’s second full-length album Muerte en una tarde de verano was released on the 10th of March, 2023, via Nettwerk Music Group. The release was accompanied by a forty-minute-long film, two handcrafted vinyl editions, an exclusive CD edition for Japan, a collaboration with American singer-songwriter Lo-Fang, and a European release tour.
