Esteban Servat is an Argentinian scientist, anti-fracking and climate justice activist. The interview was conducted on Sept. 30 at the NRW Climate Transition BarCamp in Düsseldorf, organized by the Munich Environmental Institute e.V.  

In his keynote address – titled “An Anti-Colonial Perspective on Climate Justice: Global System Change from the Bottom-Up” –  he introduced the new “Debt for Climate'' movement which is led by activists from the Global South and was launched a year ago during the G-7 summit protests in Germany. https://www.debtforclimate.org The initiative aims to build power from the bottom-up by uniting workers, Indigenous, feminist, faith, environmental, social and climate justice movements in the Global North and South, to cancel the financial debt of the Global South in order to enable a self-determined, just transition.

Back in 2018, Servat went head-to-head with his government and the world’s most powerful energy companies. The issue: the Vaca Muerta oil and gas drilling mega project in Northern Patagonia, the planet’s second largest shale basin, and averting environmental catastrophe for the region and the people who live there. According to him, debt is not only the major driver of such “carbon bombs” and the climate crisis, but also the most powerful common denominator behind which all of these struggles can unite and fight for global social, ecological and climate justice.

In his speech, Servat referred to the successful 2000 Jubilee debt relief campaign that led to the cancellation of more than $100 billion of debt owed by 35 of the poorest countries, suggesting the idea to launch a similar global interfaith campaign in the year 2025 to turn debt into climate action. The Old Testament Book of Leviticus (Lev. 25:8-17) describes the “Year of Jubilee”, which came every 50th year, as a year of releasing people from their debts, freeing slaves, and returning property to those who owned it. 

Countries in Global South countries are currently spending five times more on repaying debt than they are on addressing the impacts of the climate crisis.

Interview with Patrick Kabera, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Rwanda, on the role of the Green Climate Fund for developing countries in the global climate finance architecture.

Ahead of this week’s annual World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) meetings in Marrakesh, the German government hosted last Thursday a high-level international replenishment conference in Bonn to mobilize financial commitments for the Green Climate Fund (GCF). Established in 2015, the fund is a critical element of the Paris Agreement to support developing countries in their efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change. At the Bonn summit, 25 nations pledged about $9.3 billion for the 2024-2027 programming period. GCF hopes for contributions from more countries in the coming weeks on the road to the COP28 climate conference in Dubai.

In 2016, Rwanda was the first country to get access to the fund and so far completed ten projects in partnership with the GCF, receiving a total of $127 million, to accelerate the national climate adaptation capacity and green transition.

According to Kabera his country and the GCF have grown together in the process: “Countries like Rwanda, that are not major contributors of emissions, are equally committed to play our part to build a climate-resilient world.”

Earlier in September, the Government of Kenya and the African Union co-hosted the inaugural UN Africa Climate Summit to discuss sustainable solutions to global climate challenges under the theme "Driving Green Growth and Climate Finance Solutions for Africa and the World." The summit culminated in the Nairobi Declaration, backed by the leaders of the continent’s 54 countries, that calls on the world's biggest emitters and richest countries to keep their promises, in particular the unfilled pledge of $100 billion in annual climate finance to developing nations, and to rally behind a global carbon tax on fossil fuels, aviation and maritime transport.

Says Kabera: “The Nairobi declaration is a demonstration of the political will of our governments towards real climate action, but also a call for a reform in the global financial architecture. In order to unlock Africa’s growth and transformation, we need to invest in renewable energies, in green job creation for our population. We need to transform agriculture, adapt to climate change in core sectors like transport.”

Climate finance to developing countries is currently largely provided in the form of loans (71%) - and only 26% provided as grants.

For our first Bonnections podcast interview, we met with Rafaële Giovanola, co-founder and artistic director of CocoonDance.  Giovanola speaks about the recent 2016 Into-the-Fields Dance Festival in Bonn and the company’s newest production, “Momentum”, that will premiere on April 7. 

Giovanola is a Swiss dancer and choreographer, who was born in Baltimore and worked with William Forythe’s Frankfurt Ballet and other international dance companies. Rafaële spoke to Bonnections on March 22 about her Bonn-based modern dance ensemble, her philosophy and her own professional journey.  We also talked about her work with youth and non-professional dancers, including refugees in Germany and young dancers in Mali, and what she learned from this experience.

CocoonDance was founded by Giovanola and her husband Rainald Endraß in 2000. The company directs and curates the dance division of the Theater im Ballsaal in Bonn-Endenich and has established itself as an internationally acclaimed contemporary dance institution that offers a vibrant and stimulating environment for creative self-expression and team work. Over the last decade, CocoonDance has developed innovative arts education projects which led to the founding of the Junior Company Bonn, a youth ensemble with more than thirty members between 7 and 17 years of age.

Meet Rafaële Giovanola, an amazing dance artist and inspirational world citizen

Said Nazir Afridi is the managing editor and co-founder of the Tribal News Network, a radio and internet news agency in Pakistan. TNN is based in Peshawar, the capital of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of northern Pakistan.

The interview was conducted at the 2017 Global Media Forum in Bonn, Germany on June 19. Against the backdrop of the World Refugee Day which falls on June 20, he talks about the situation of the Afghan refugees in his country. Pakistan has been hosting Afghan refugees for three decades. A year ago,  the government  announced that more than 2 million refugees — some in the country since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 — needed to go home. 

Their forced return of Afghans has come at a particularly dangerous time. A total of 3,498 civilians killed and 7,920 wounded in 2016, more than at any other time since 2009.
 
TNN  provides a free mobile news service in remote tribal areas of Pakistan, where mobile Internet services are unavailable. Many people do not have smartphones or are illiterate. Through the service they are able to use their phones to listen to the news. The news is updated every hour and each segment includes a minimum of three news stories. It was such a great success that TNN received 631,000 calls in the first month. 

Working with over 40 reporters, TNN produces and broadcasts a 7-minute local news bulletin from 11 partner radio stations in Pakistan-Afghanistan border region, three times a day. TNN also provides news on its website in Pashtu, Urdu and English. www.radiotnn.com. 

To promote female journalists in the conservative Pashtun society, TNN has trained 22 female journalism students through an internship program in the last three years.

#WALKTOGETHER FOR #MANDELA100
Nelson Mandela would have turned 100 this year on July 18. To mark the Mandela Centennial and support the global WalkTogether campaign of the Elders, Bonnections has launched a local story telling project (online & offline) to celebrate his 100th birthday and renew the Madiba legacy in Bonn.

In this #WalkTogether podcast series, we are asking people from near and far what Mandela means to them and about the significance of his life and legacy with regards to the global inqualities and challenges of our times. 

Annedore Smith is a German journalist and former anti-apartheid activist, who has worked many years on the African continent as a foreign correspondent and media trainer.  Smith met Nelson Mandela for the first time in London at a press conference covering as a BBC reporter his historic visit in spring 1990,  just two months after his release from prison, where he’d spent 27 years of his life. 

Smith will also give a special Mandela100 Eco Monday Talk next Monday (July 23) at 6 PM  in Bonn as part of a local #Mandela100 Action Week.  It includes an intercultural Summer Fest with a grassroots tribute concert featuring local hiphop artists, folk musicians and singer-songwriters.  (The Mandela100 Fest starts at 5 PM at Eutopia.)

On April 16, 1990, Mandela went on stage at the "International Tribute for a Free South Africa" charity concert at London’s Wembley Stadium. The musical lineup included the Simple Minds, Lou Reed, Chrissie Hynde, Tracy Chapman, Bonnie Raitt, Natalie Cole, Neil Young and Peter Gabriel, but the person who brought down the house was Madiba himself. 

Speaking in front of a crowd of 72,000 — and millions who were watching the TV broadcast in more than 60 countries  — Mandela thanked all his supporters around the world, saying:

"Thank you that you chose to care, because you could have decided otherwise. Thank you that you elected not to forget, because our fate could have been a passing concern. We are here today because, for almost three decades, you sustained a campaign for the unconditional release of all South African political prisoners. We are here because you took the humane decision that you could not ignore the inhumanity represented by the apartheid system."

#Beleafit // Inspiriert von der keniansichen Umwelt- und Menschenrechtsaktivistin  Wangari Maathai hat Felix Finkbeiner(21) als neunjähriger Schüler die Kinder- und Jugendbewegung Plant-For-The-Planet ins Leben gerufen.  

In dem Podcast erzählt er, wie es dazu gekommen ist, was diese Umweltorganisation macht und warum eine massive weltweite Aufforstung wichtig für den Klimaschutz ist.  Dafür hat Plant-For-The-Planet vor einem Jahr die Trillion Tree Kampagne gestartet.  

Zu den 1000 Milliarden Bäumen für die Zukunft der Kinder kann jeder beitragen: Unter www.trilliontreecampaign.org kann jeder sein Baumziel festlegen. Wenn jeder Mensch auf der Erde 150 Bäume pflanzt in seiner Lebenszeit, schaffen wir gemeinsam die 1000 Milliarden, so Finkbeiner.

Plant-For-the-Planet hat sich zudem zum Ziel gesetzt, eine Millionen Kinder weltweit als Klimabotschafter*innen auszubilden. Bisher gibt es 82.000.  Am 5. Oktober findet eine Plant-For-the-Planet Akademie in Königswinter statt.  An der Akademie für Klimagerechtigkeit beschäftigen sich 9-12-jährige mit den Ursachen und Folgen der Klimakrise. Die Parents for Future werden beim "Life Giving Forests"  Thementag der #Week4Climate am 22. September tagsüber beim KlimaCamp im Bonner Hofgarten die Klimaschutzorganisation Plant-For-The-Planet und ihre neue "Beleave It" Kampagne vorstellen. 

Das Interview wurde am 16. September am Rande der “Verantwortlich Zukunft gestalten" Konferenz im Bonner Kunstmuseum geführt, die von dem in Bonn ansässigen Senat der Wirtschaft und der Europäische Technologiekammer (EUTECC) organisiert war. Es ging bei dieser Veranstaltung um eine Bestandsaufnahme hinsichtlich der großen Herausforderungen der Weltgemeinschaft in den Bereichen Entwicklung, Energie und Klima mit einem besonderen Fokus auf Afrika.   Das Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) hat bei der Veranstaltung die Multiakteurspartnerschaft "Allianz für Entwicklung und Klima" vorgestellt und dafür geworben, dass sich Unternehmen daran beteiligen zur Umsetzung der Agenda 2030 und zum globalen Klimaschutz. https://allianz-entwicklungklima.de

Interview mit Plant-For-The-Planet Gründer Felix Finkbeiner (Bonn 16.9.19)

Finance For Future // Am 12. November war Moritz Schröder-Therre, Pressesprecher von urgewald e.V., zu Gast bei GreenDrinks Bonn, um einen Einblick in die Arbeit der Umwelt- und Menschenrechtsorganisation und die globale Kohle-Divestment-Bewegung zu geben.

Wer Geld gibt, trägt Verantwortung. Dieser Gedanke prägt die Arbeit der NGO urgewald aus dem Münsterland. Sie deckt auf, wo Banken, Investoren und Konzerne mit ihrem Geld Projekte ermöglichen, die die Umwelt zerstören oder Menschenrechte gefährden. https://urgewald.org

Divestment ist das Gegenteil von Investment. Kohle Divestment bedeutet, der fossilen Wertschöpfungskette das Geld entziehen.  Wie das funktioniert, erklärt Moritz Schröder-Therre in dem Podcast Interview.  

Im September hat Urgewald  mit 30 Partner-NGOs im Vorfeld des UN-Klimagipfels in New York ein Update der "Global Coal Exit List" (GCEL) veröffentlicht. Sie ist die weltweit umfangreichste Datenbank von Unternehmen, die Geschäfte mit Kohle für die Energieerzeugung machen. https://coalexit.org

Die Liste verdeutlicht laut Schröder-Therre, dass Kohlefirmen immer noch viel Geld erhalten, um neue klimaschädliche Kraftwerke und -minen zu bauen.  Über 400 der 746 Unternehmen auf der Global Coal Exit List planen nach wie vor ihre Kohleaktivitäten auszuweiten. Daher sei es höchste Zeit der Industrie das Geld und die politische Unterstützung zu entziehen.

Zum Weltspartag am 31. Okober sind bundesweit Gruppen und Organisationen dem Aufruf von urgewald gefolgt und haben vor und in Sparkassen für Klimaschutz und Frieden demonstriert. Aktionen gab es in 30 Städten, unter anderem auch in Bonn, organisiert von lokalen GreenPeace und Fridays for Future Aktivist*innen bei der Sparkassen-Filiale am Friedensplatz. Mit einem Info-Stand und „Die-In“-Flashmob protestierten sie gegen die Finanzgeschäfte der Sparkassen-Gruppe und Deka-Investment Fonds mit Kohle- und Rüstungsfirmen. 

Bereits einige Tage vor der Aktion hatte die Sparkasse KölnBonn neue Nachhaltigkeitsrichtlinien veröffentlicht, in denen sie sich unter anderem verpflichtet die eigenen Finanzanlagen nicht mehr in große Kohlefirmen wie RWE und in Produzenten von Atomwaffen zu investieren. Dies zeige, dass sich etwas bewegt, so Schröder-Therre, doch es sei noch einiges zu tun.

Mahnmal gegen Gewalt an Frauen in Bonn enthüllt //
Seit Beginn der Zivilisation sind Frauen in bewaffneten Konflikten geschlechtsspezifischer Gewalt ausgesetzt – von sexueller Gewalt über Vergewaltigungen bis hin zur Versklavung und Völkermord.

Am 8. März wurde im Hof des Bonner Frauenmuseums eine Friedensstatue und “Mahnmal gegen Gewalt an Frauen in Kriegen” in Anwesenheit der Künstlerin Andrea Kreipe eingeweiht. In dem Podcast Interview berichtet die Bildhauerin aus Böblingen über den Entstehungsprozess des Mahnmals, für das 50 Künstlerinnen aus ganz Deutschland Entwürfe eingereicht hatten. Im Sommer 2019 entschied sich die Jury für den von Kreipe.

Die 62-jährige Künstlerin hat an dem Wachsmodell für die Skulptur monatelang gearbeitet und sich dabei intensiv mit der Situation der Frau in der Gesellschaft auseinandergesetzt. “Ich kenne fast keine Frau, die nicht selber schon Übergriffe erlebt hat,” sagt sie.

Die 1,80 Meter große Bronzeskulptur zeigt eine Frau, die sich schützt und schämt, gleichzeitig aber auch einen Schritt raus aus dieser existenziellen Situation macht. “Das zeigt die Hoffnung auf, dass sie ihr Leben wieder in den Griff kriegen kann. Und das kann sie nur, indem sie sich bewegt,” so Kreipe.

Am Pfingstmontag  hatte das Bündnis „Alle Dörfer bleiben“ zu einem Konzert der besonderen Art eingeladen. Auf einem vom Braunkohletagebau bedrohten Bauernhof in dem Dorf Keyenberg bei Erkelenz spielen 58 Profi-Musiker*innen aus dem Rheinland Beethovens 6. Symphonie („Pastorale“). Mit dem Corona-konformen Freilluft-Wandelkonzert setzen die Musizierenden ein Zeichen für den Erhalt der Dörfer am Braunkohletagebau und für den Klimaschutz. Das Orchester wurde eigens zu dem Anlass auf private Initiative des Bonner Bratschisten Michael Bergen zusammengestellt. 

Das Bonnections Interview mit ihm wurde kurz nach dem Konzert und begeisterten Applaus der 150 Besucher*innen aufgenommen.  Bergen sagt darin: "Wenn Beethoven heute leben würde, wäre er hier gewesen und hätte uns unterstützt. Denn die Pastorale ist ein musikalisches Abbild der Natur."  

Beethoven habe gerne seine Inspiration bei langen Spaziergängen in der Natur eingenommen.

Das Konzert war ein Beitrag zum „World Pastoral Day“ des in Bonn ansässigen UN-Klimaschutzsekretariats am 5. Juni 2020 (World Environment Day). Das Beethoven Pastoral Project hat Musiker*innen und Künstler*innen in aller Welt dazu aufgerufen sind, die mit einem Statement zum Klimaschutz zu verknüpfen.

Beim Pastorale Konzert in Keyenberg, kaum 300 Meter vor der Tagebaukante, spielten die Musiker*innen verteilt auf dem Gelände eines alten Hofes: auf der Wiese, zwischen Strohballen und landwirtschaftlichen Geräten, im denkmalgeschützten Innenhof. So konnten nicht nur alle Abstand voneinander halten, es ergab sich auch ein ganz besonders Klang- und Naturerlebnis.

Interview mit MIchael Bergen zum Beethoven-Wandelkonzert in Keyenberg

Kole Ade-Odutola is a Nigerian world citizen, poet, environmentalist and impact communications expert, currently working as a Yoruba lecturer in the Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures at the University of Florida, Gainesville. But above and beyond he's a great storyteller. Kole joined us virtually as a special guest for the Countdown GreenDrinks Bonn event on Oct. 13, 2020, co-hosted by Bonnections and the Tannenbusch House.  Kole told us the  tale of "The village where the king ordered that all trees be cut before the next day..."

Dennis Josef Meseg hat eine Kunstinstallation kreiert zum diesjährigen Internationalen Tag gegen Gewalt an Frauen aus 222 orangefarbenen maskierten Mannequins/Schaufensterfiguren.  Sie war am 25. November auf dem Münsterplatz in der UN-Stadt Bonn zu sehen zur Unterstützung der globalen  #OrangeTheWorld Kampagne und den #16Days of Activsim. "Broken“ ist ein Aufruf, ein öffentlich sichtbarer stummer künstlericher Aufschrei, die Gewalt gegen Frauen endlich zu beenden. Parallel zu der vom Zonta Club Bonn untestützten Kunstinstallation gab es am Nachmittag eine Corona konforme "Reclaim the Night" Kundgebung und Mahnwache für die Opfer von Femiziden, sexualierter und häuslicher Gewalt, organisiert von der lokalen frauen*streik Gruppe mit Beteiligung eines diversen Spektrums von Bonner Frauengruppen, Organisationen und Künstler*innen. Häusliche Gewalt an Frauen hat in der Coronakrise weltweit zugenommen und wird von der UN als die "Schatten-Pandemie"  bezeichnet.  In den kommenden  16 Tagen -- bis zum Internationalen Human Rights Day am 10. Dezember -- wird die Installation auf eine Städtetour quer durch Deutschland ziehen.
