Defected Radio Show: Nic Fanciulli & Butch Takeover - 05.05.23

The Stairway to Nowhere (FSQ Remix) is part of a large collection of previously unreleased FSQ remixes, available exclusively to Soul Clap Records Bandcamp monthly subscribers. Titled "FSQ - The Remix Special 2" this collection covers unexpected remix work that the Soul Clap Records stalwart group FSQ has undertaken in the past decade.

The original track "Stairway To Nowhere" was released in 2021 by dynamic producer / songwriter Le Chev (Michael Cheever) and Mexico's finest, Pato Watson and singer songwriter Drew Citron.

For their remix, FSQ turns down the tempos on the original, and adds heaps of slinky Spanish styled guitars, booming funk slap bass, turning this stairway into a path to the Balearic isles. FSQ's One Era (aka Matt Coogan) provides most of the additional instrumentation here, including his trademark pocketed disco drumming and Caribbean percussion stylings.

Le Chev (Michael Cheever) is a musician, producer, and DJ. He is known for his songwriting, recording and production work with LP Giobbi, Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters), Crush Club, Purple Disco Machine, SSION, Matthew Barney (artist), Lauren Hill, Johnny Stimson, SOFI TUKKER, Fischerspooner, and many more.

If you have danced in Mexico you’ve heard about Pato Watson for sure. Close to being legendary educating Mexican clubbers for over 20 years, the Mexico City native, is part of the successful duo NSM PSM (No somos machos Pero somos muchos). He was part of the Mexican Institute of Sound, has performed in some of the most important festivals worldwide, including Coachella, Vive Latino, La Fete de la Musique (Paris), Rock al Parque (Bogota, Colombia), also in countries like Sweden, Norway, Spain and USA. He has shared the stage with artists such as Soulwax, 2 many djs, MSTRKFT, Digitalism, Fisherspooner, Felix Da Housecat, Z-Trip, Mix Master Mike, 2 Bears to name a few …

Brooklyn indie-rock stalwart Drew Citron formed Beverly in 2013, after having got her start as a touring member with Frankie Rose and The Pains of Being Pure of Heart. With Free Now, Citron, one of the most beautiful voices in Indie Rock, comes to the table with a whole lot of pain to sing about and the full musical knowledge to put herself, and her talents, front and center.

South African duo Logo Alloy & Zam T bring spiritual depths to new EP for Vibe Me To The Moon. This duo hooked up back in 2021, and since then, they have been helping to shape the contemporary deep house underground in SA. Their mission to craft timeless sounds steeped in real emotion has taken them to labels like Harley & Muscle's Soulstar Records and Little Angel, as well as the likes of Open Bar Music. The richness of their sound designs and always infectious grooves have seen them climb high in charts, and this latest EP on Nightsteppaz NYC label is another big step up.

 Opener 'Care For Me' is a deep house gem built on a groove with a subtle skip and enveloped with warm, diffuse chords that call to mind greats of the genre like Terrence Parker and Louie Vega. Silky, soulful vocals glide up top with a sense of intimacy and vulnerability that blends dancefloor energy with tender melodic textures. The superb 'Goin Nowhere' cruises on low-slung drums and louche claps that lay the foundations of a dreamy late-night vibe. Starry-eyed chords shimmer through the mix, while jazzy keys add a playful charm to a velvet-wrapped soundscape that’s equal parts house and lounge.

 Next up, the dubby 'Let's Go' has more drive and percussive texture with some subtle cosmic FX. A spoken word vocal layers in further smoky depths to this late-night, chord-infused cruise to the stars. Last but not least, 'Don't Go Stay' showcases Logo Alloy & Zam T's melodic flair with a mix of soft, sugary chords and Roy Ayers-style keys that bring subtle celebration and life-affirming soul to another buttery smooth groove.

Malta's Melchior Sultana is a multi-instrumentalist with releases on labels like Ten Lovers Music, Oath and Underground Quality. Not to mention his own Profound Sound Music label or collaborations with Owen Jay. Here he debuts on Cataleya Music with Ghost, which is an uplifting deep winner with a Mediterranean feel. The vocals from Janelle Pulo give it a spiritual edge. Guitars and synths do the heavy lifting. Kai Alcé's NDATL Remix really focuses on the piano keys, taking it further into Deep and Spiritual territory. Vick Lavender's Higher Frequency Remix is a brass and key journey. This heavier interpretation gets seriously jazzy later on. Ghost is a strong debut from Sultana, backed by high quality remixes.

Fast becoming the golden boy of a new generation of broken beat producers, Danvers, shows no signs of slowing up with this latest release on Boogie Café.
Four cuts of soulful broken beat tinged deepness, kicking off with ‘Desire’ a double bass groover interweaved with hazy pianos and chopped up vocals. On remix duties, Harry Wolfman lays down a woozy, sun-drenched, emotive rework. Awash with jazzy keys, dreamy synths and tight drum loops it offers up the perfect soundtrack to kick back to, beachside, Pina Colada in hand…
On the B side, Danvers is back at the helm with ‘I Can’t Let Him Know’’ an afro tinged, bruked up jam, heavy on the live bass, syncopated synths & vocal litanies. Last up, ‘Someone To Count On’ is a crunchy, late night, soiree coupling a full bodied bass synth, crushed up drum hits and sleazed out pads.
 Heaters a plenty on this one, taking Danvers one step closer to world Danvination.
