(en)Following stunning solo releases from Julienne Dessagne aka The Twins and Sascha Funke, revered techno balladeers SASCHIENNE reunite for a stunning offering called GOLDEN PRINTS, a gorgeous set of synth-driven, beat-bound soundscapes rich in atmosphere and suspense. 

It's a kind of unruly romanticism that perfuses the budding techno scenarios from SASCHIENNE, often starting with a deceptively simple hook - which slowly evolves into a tense drama as abrasive as it is therapeutic. GOLDEN PRINTS is no different, smudging the volatile faultlines between anthemic electronics, cyber folk and industrial drones from the get-go. 

The A-side's double bill kicks off with the crawling synths from CHAMBRE BLEUE, a dusty, introspective vignette whose increasingly queasy mood is balanced by Julienne's self-assured narration and an unswerving bass line. THE ERA OF THE LEOPARD continues the trek through barren lands with a strong instinct for survival, embodied by its sunburnt guitar licks, throbbing bass and resonant leads. 

The flipside belongs to the somewhat ominously titled DON'T PUT YOUR FINGERS IN THE SOCKET, an exquisite arrangement of contorted feedback loops, foreboding synth sequences and a relentlessly mechanical beat. Short vocal interjections seem to only further the mystique, merely containing the seemingly erratic outbursts of a cut deliberately spiralling out of control. This is music for adventures and other transgressions, undiluted and unfaltering - an exciting new release from two people who know which way to twist the knife.

Es ist eine Art von ungezogener Romantik, die sich durch die aufkeimenden Techno-Szenarios von SASCHIENNE zieht, oft gepaart mit einer täuschend einfach gehaltenen Hookline - die gerne in ein intensives Drama von Reibung und Therapie mündet. GOLDEN PRINTS macht da keine Ausnahme und verwischt von Anfang an die ohnehin flüchtigen Grenzen zwischen hymnischer Elektronik, Cyber-Folk und industriellen Lärmschlieren. 

Die Doppelvorstellung der A-Seite beginnt mit den krabbelnden Synthies von CHAMBRE BLEUE, einer grobkörnigen, introspektiven Vignette, deren zunehmend mulmige Stimmung durch Juliennes selbstgewisse Erzählweise und eine unerschütterliche Bassline in Schach gehalten wird. THE ERA OF THE LEOPARD setzt den Marsch durch karges Terrain fort, dank eines starken Überlebensinstinkts der sich hier in sonnengegerbten Gitarren-Licks, pochendem Bass und resonierenden Lead-Sounds äussert. 

Die Rückseite gehört dem einigermassen ominös benannten DON'T PUT YOUR FINGERS IN THE SOCKET, einem exquisiten Arrangement von verzogenen Feedback-Schleifen, unheilsschwangeren Synth-Sequenzen und einem unermüdlich mechanischen Beat. Kurze Vocal-Einwürfe scheinen den geheimnisvollen Nimbus nur zu verstärken, kaum daß sie die vordergründig erratisch anmutenden Ausbrüche eindämmen könnten, welche den bewusst aus der Spur gelenkten Track heimsuchen. Dies ist Musik für Abenteuer und andere Grenzverletzungen, unverschnitten und unbeugsam - ein neues aufregendes Release von zweien, die ganz genau wissen in welchem Einfallswinkel das Salz in die Wunde gestreut wird.

For close to 15 years, Gui Boratto has been a core member of the Kompakt family and remains one of Brazil’s most cherished electronic music producers of our generation. His work over the years includes five studio albums, countless EP releases and remixes for the likes of Massive Attack, Pet Shop Boys and Paul Simon to name a few. Beyond that he operates his own label imprint D.O.C. which houses fledgling and established Brazlilan acts such as L_CIO, Shadow Movement and others.

Gui Boratto and Kompakt proudly inaugurate a new live recorded set series on the label entitled “Backstage”. A live set recorded in June during the peak of lockdown in his Sao Paulo studio, Gui Boratto that brings forward new life to his most classic recordings along with new, unreleased music in a seamless live mix. His live shows have been a huge part of what fans have come to love from this charismatic producer and “Backstage” is here to exemplify that.

“Backstage” coincides with the release of his new EP for Kompakt entitled “Wake Up” – of which all three of the tracks appear in the live mix. Gui Boratto’s signature style is back and bolder than ever. His classic debut “Chromophobia” has an inescapable essence that rings through the title track Wake Up. His wife Luciana Villanova returns on vocals to caress us on a cloudy tom tom driven breakdown of a beat. “Beksy’s” brings that mid-tempo energy Gui is so good immersed in dramatic synth stabs that make it heavenly sounding. “Endless Holidays” is a disco-house tinged affair that relies on a killer bass line to move clap happy hi hats and a duelling guitar to unpronounced levels of positiveness.

Berlin-based duo Booka Shade, aka Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier, have carved out a reputation as one of the most celebrated electronic acts to come out of Europe over the past two decades. 

With their beginnings in Frankfurt and their sights originally on synth-pop, the duo Booka Shade quickly gained a strong following within electronic music, and in 2002 the pairing formed the now legendary dance label Get Physical Music (together with M.A.N.D.Y., Thomas ‘DJ T.’ Koch and Peter Hayo), where they would have a platform for their own music. 

Three years later, in 2005, their EP’s ‘Mandarine EP’ and ‘Body Language’ - the latter co-produced with M.A.N.D.Y. - launched Booka Shade into the stratosphere with both EPs becoming international successes, whilst the following years soon welcomed an extensive body of work featuring a combination of stand out albums and singles that quickly achieved further global success.

Since their break-through performance at Sónar in 2005, Booka Shade have earned huge recognition with their innovative live shows, even being named one of Resident Advisor's Top 5 live acts in the world in 2010. They have opened for legendary acts such as Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk, whilst headlining stages at the likes of Coachella, Glastonbury, Rock Werchter, and Red Rocks just to name a few. In recent years, the band has appeared amongst the likes of DJ Mag’s ‘Alternative Top 100 DJ List’ (2018), whilst their notable live sets have led to key mentions amongst a host of distinguished festival reviews and round-ups, including placement within DJ Mag’s ’10 Unforgettable Sets From The History Of Exit Festival’.

Booka Shade were also inducted into Pete Tong's BBC Radio 1 Hall of Fame, having received strong support from the station throughout their careers, playing at both the ‘40 Years of Radio 1’ celebration with Annie Nightingale and the ‘20 Years of Essential Mix’ party, whilst also mixing Pete Tong’s ‘All Gone Ibiza’ compilation album. 

The duo’s fan base is in no way restricted to electronic music enthusiasts, with great success playing slots at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Lollapalooza, and more by utilising their massive crossover potential, which is as evident in their billings as it is in their remix credits, including acts like Depeche Mode, Moby, Hot Chip, Kings of Leon, Woodkid, The Knife and many more.

Add to the mix their Blaufield Music imprint, founded in 2013, and it’s clear and easy to see the pairing's musical knowledge not only as producers but also adept A&R’s, with releases to date on the imprint from both emerging and established talent alongside their own productions resulting in a string of releases and collaborations that can be regularly found amongst the upper end of Beatport’s Top 100 charts and championed by many of the industry’s biggest names.

Twenty years, dozens of EP’s and six albums later, Booka Shade have become more than a household name, they have become synonymous with the spirit which drives electronic music and have set a precedent to which electronic music is still held to today.
