Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, iconos de la música tradicional colombiana, el legendario productor de dub ingles Adrian Sherwood y Diego Gómez de Llorona Records se unen en DUB DE GAITA  (EL FIN DEL MUNDO), un disco que explora las raices de la cumbia y las musicas de gaita a partir de la sonoridad y las técnicas de mezcla del dub. El disco grabado entre Colombia e Inglaterra y que cuenta con los nombres mas representativos de la música de gaita en Colombia además de invitados especiales como Mario Galeano (Ondatropica y Frente Cumbiero) y legendas del DUB / REGGAE ingles como Skip McDonald (Little Axe), George Oben y The Ital Horns, será lanzado en Colombia y el mundo en el 2014.

Hot Rocks is the musical partnership of Jesse Munro Johnson (Gulls), and Mike McKinnon (Natural Magic). Since day one, each has followed their own musical path, but for the past 20 years, their journeys as musicians and engineers have been intertwined in various studios across the West. Working in tandem as engineers and producers with the likes of Elite Beat, Mdou Moctar, Sávila, and many others, a chemistry of distilled musical enthusiasm and kinship solidified. In 2021, they began gathering weekly in the Boomarm Nation studio, experimenting with the intention of building up a new sound.
Minerals (Versions) is the first offering from a harvest sown from those weekly gatherings. The sonic palette is earthy and cosmic, cool to the touch yet emanating a warmth that travels effortlessly. The woody melodic tones of tuned hand and mallet percussion, resampled brass, and bamboo flutes float in the anti-gravity of shimmering chordal clouds and throws of dubby solar flares. Built from live jams, re-spun, resampled, looped, and reassembled in a live all hands on the board mix. Each of the three versions rides an arc of slow-mo, mid-tempo glow and a weighty soundsystem embrace. This is a heartfelt dose of something fresh for your speakers!

Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto are Colombian cumbia roots icons, legendary in their homeland as guardians of ancient regional musical and cultural traditions. Here they are joined by another legend, On-U Sound founder and dub producer Adrian Sherwood. Alongside Llorona Records ́s Diego Gómez, Sherwood and the band have created an absolutely unique sound that seamlessly blends timeless cumbia rhythms and sonorities with powerfully restrained dub mixing.

It is no exaggeration or hyperbole to call this mystical music, a heart-centered psychogeographical journey from the Caribbean Coast of Colombia through Jamaica and UK dubscapes. The heartbeat rhythms this team explores so deftly unite musical cultures in such a natural way that the sound they produce feels almost inevitable. Vocal exhortations, massed flutes, organic bass and keys, extraordinary volleys of percussion, echo trails, reggae skanks, and truly masterful arrangements and dubbing make this a simply crucial release. Miles beyond most attempts at cross-cultural musical fusion, we guarantee you will be mesmerized by the beauty and power of Dub De Gaita. There is simply nothing else like it.

ZamZam is proud to present a long-awaited 7” from Portland pillar Gulls AKA Jesse Munro Johnson.  Johnson is known the world over as label boss of Boomarm Nation, one of the jewels of underground Cascadian sound.  The Boomarm aesthetic is one of experimental brilliance, sound system music from outer worlds and inner dimensions, responsible for many heads’ first exposure to artists such as El Mahdy Jr and Iskeletor.  

A&R moves aside, some of the most unique and memorable moments in the Boomarm catalog are Gulls’ own.  In a scene full of copycats strong on presets but weak on voice, Johnson is a producer that has fully digested many influences to create a truly unique sound.  Deploying hardware, software, live instrumentation and desk-as-instrument, Gulls knows his history and the present moment but stays focused on manifesting his saturated, distorted out sound from way in.  

Water Creature is a 110 bpm beast of fuzzed bassline, panned toms, 80s claps, syncopated snares, shimmering, distorted synth melody and insistent rave-ish stabs. Dubbed & delayed guitar figures recall West Africa without resorting to ethnographic forgery or facile sampling.  An enveloping, mesmerizing, neck-snapping journey through shades of dancehall and dub techno that will demand replays, lingering in the psyche long after the runout groove.

On the flip Gulls delights as band leader of the Gulls Rhythm Force, a real-time ensemble of horns, percussion and electronics deployed in the service of the same simmering, shimmering Gulls aesthetic.  A steady 140 bpm 4/4 kick pulse anchors a hallucinogenic world of ghosting skanks, a static, hazy motif that feels like double and triple exposed silver-gelatin prints, clear images giving way to abstract grain. Mirage-like guitar, smearing trumpet and bubbling keys float in and out of focus, emerging from a haze of pink distortion and purple reverb, only to be subsumed in the thick atmospheres and overlapping echo trails once more.

This month Carhartt WIP Radio brings you music of a label from Portland, Oregon that listens to the name Boomarm Nation and has been launched in the year 2009 by Jesse Munro Johnson aka Gulls. The vibe of his music platfrom is experimental by nature, deeply rooted in dub aesthetics, international collaborations, electronic exploration and the sound system culture. Boomarm Nation’s artists come from all around the world like Algeria, Iran, USA, Canada, Tunisia, Mali or Europe. For Cahartt WIP Radio Gulls conducted a mix that give a broad arc of the label's history and aesthetic by including a selection of classic Boomarm tracks, as well as unreleased, and forthcoming material by artists such as Mdou Moctar, E3, Sky High, Saint Abdullah, Elite Beat and many more.
