Drifting Away

I made this one back in 2008. It's supposed to be a flipside for my first ever vinyl record on Brand:Nu Recordings but unfortunately, the label stopped functioning before the release. Now it's finally out on our latest @MicrofunkMusic cassette 'Lost Dubs 3' alongside 9 bangers by Oak, Synkro, Hybris, Jason oS, Dissident, Akuratyde & Kharm, Elsewhere and Abstract Elements.

The third edition of Microfunk Music’s coveted ‘Lost Dubs’ series is finally here. Featuring 10 rhythmic glitch patterns from the Russian labels usual suspects, you can expect compositions from Synkro, Oak, Hybris, Akuratyde, Dissident, Kharm, Jason oS and of course label boss Bop. The record will be available on all digital and streaming platforms after a week-long exclusive on Bandcamp and will be pressed to a limited run of 100 cassette tapes, which will not last long. With distinguished artwork courtesy of none other than the infamous Trickartt, this is truly a collectors item and not to be missed.

Many things slip through the sands of time, but thankfully these beautiful songs will know no such fate. The introductory ‘Time’ from Manchester's Synkro is laden with a hopeful sadness, as melancholic sonics reverberate beautifully from start to finish. You could be forgiven for thinking this may set the tone for the LP to come, but what follows is a compendium of beautifully crafted musical delights, as varied in character and constitution as the seasons themselves.

A frequent partner of Bop as both a performer and artist, Oak graces the imprint once more with a deep electro cut ‘The Bay’ and tells a down-tempo tale in ‘Airwalk’, which is available to download upon pre-ordering the full LP. Rampant in it’s sheer textural beauty, the likes of Elsewhere follow suit with an expansive and heart-fluttering take on the 170BPM tempo in the form of ‘Procession’. Things take a techy turn as Jason oS delivers an introspective stepper in his ‘Hidden State’, but not before Akuratyde and Kharm weave their own atmospheric wonder ‘Enamoured’.

Although never fearful of pushing the boundaries or confinements within the D&B universe, Microfunk Music remains true to the genre that inspired it with the likes of Hybris injecting his trademark sonics into a sublimely styled technoid roller. Last week Navalny was arrested when he returned to Moscow from Germany, where he had spent five months recovering from 'Novichok' poisoning. After that their team released a documentary about Putin's secret palace (www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipAnwilMncI). There are lots of interesting things inside among 17 691 square meters (alongside some even more interesting info about whose money spent on it) and one of them is a place called Aqua Discoteque which became a meme here in Russia pretty fast. 

I hope someday I'll wake up in a country where taxpayers money won't be spent on one man's whimsy toys. And when the palace turns into a museum, I know what tune I'll play first in the Aqua Discoteque.

Opening piece ‘NDE’ casts Bop’s archetypal and skittery off-beat rhythms across a palate of soothing synth pads, adventurous arpeggios and dusty hoover bass drones. Subtly funky throughout, the tinges of garage vocal stabs shimmer across this imaginative stepper.

‘Take Your Time’ offers up thought provoking chord progressions amongst Bop’s contemplative sound . A super low-slung drum pattern makes way for the crisp, immersive vocal tones that flutter elegantly above.

Switching to fifth gear, ‘Beach Simulator 3D’ leads the charge with up-tempo breakbeats racing across dubby chord stabs and eerie percussive effects. A late-night ride you’ll need to buckle your seatbelt for, Bop initiates intergalactic mode on this one.

‘Skolzkaya Dorozhka’, meaning ‘Slippery Slope’ in Russian, is a wobbly dub groove that channels styles from mid-noughties DMZ and Tempa releases, a heavy sub drives through a minimalist half-time groove.

Finally, the 150+ BPM whopper ‘Hiding’ is a nod to Bop’s love for dance music which can be found at the faster end of the electronic spectrum. Ticking hats and warm atmospherics are the perfect wrap-up to a truly special release.

No stranger to pioneering successful moves outside the realms of 174BPM, Bop secured the number 1 spot on the Beatport Garage chart alongside Subwave with ‘Haze’.
