Ulla Records is back with another VA : « Shifted Frequencies ». For our two years anniversary we wanted to treat you with something special, our first physical release, on vinyl !

Now you know our mojo : to explore that 80s inspired, wonky disco sound, in all its shapes and forms ! From Italo to acid, EBM or New Wave, we wanted to showcase some of the multiple facets of the label, our interpretation of these « Shifted Frequencies ». Between France, Italy, UK & Germany, we gathered a fine selection of talented artists, a mix of familiar faces and new encounters.

We’re thrilled to welcome Younger Than Me and REES for the first time on the label, and equally so to have Alberto Melloni back with us, alongside label founders Austher and Naranja. All together, they captured some fragments of our shifted frequencies.

Vito Roccoforte and Gabriel Andruzzi – AKA Mother Of Mars are BACK, this time featuring the luxuriant vocal delights of Satomi Matsuzaki.

Vito and Gabe are best known as members of era-defining NY post punkers The Rapture and continue their tradition of angular yet danceable, hooky yet challenging musical output with brand new EP, Harmonium Detector.

Title track, Harmonium Detector, is based on the concept of breaking up with your cellphone - something Vito has attempted in the past, with limited success! It showcases Satomi’s lush vocals, transporting the listener to a world of rapturous electronic elation. Its intricate layers of rhythm create a unique and mesmerising listening experience that will have you bopping on the spot in no time at all.

We've enlisted the talents of two incredible remixers to put their spin on the original too. First up is Max Pask, who delivers a disco workout of a remix that adds a new dimension to the original. With his expert ear, he’s teased out parts from the MoM version to create a true disco behemoth - this mix is going to be burning up dance floors all over the world.

Next, Hologram Teen's Espresso ESP Remix takes it in a House-ier direction, with its bouncy, energetic sounds, squelchy bassline and vocodered vocals. Morgane (previously of seminal French Avant-Popsters, Stereolab) has created something truly experimental, yet thoroughly dance-able here, invoking shades of Laurie Anderson.

Finally, the Harmonium Decorum (Edit), provides an ephemeral, radio-friendly version of the original track that still retains its pulsating, fun energy

Zaratustra is a young French producer strongly inspired by indie dance, italo disco, EBM, new beat, acid and ethnic music. His style matured over the course of this year & we actually received this extraordinary "uprising" demo. This track symbolizes the perfect mix of rock, italo and EBM, for the older ones we will notice the incredible similarity in the voice with Ian Astbury singer of The Cult. A bit as if this fabulous group would have teleported to 2022 accompanied by a very modern production. It is once again STOLT who strikes the blow with one of his finest vocal performances. We called again on the brilliant Lauer for a rereading halfway between Suicide, Alan Vega & The cramps. This record is more than a statement, it's a miracle.

Brynjolfur's 'Sintético' promises a joyful revival of summer dancefloors. Inspired by the music of Southern Europe in the late 80s and early 90s, the EP draws on a range of genres from italo to dream house to the nascent forms of progressive and trance. The four-track EP, radiates a warm, sun-drenched vibe, is out May 12th.

Maybe many of you don't know that my region Emilia-Romagna, Italy, was hit by terrible floods that destroyed lives, houses, changed landscapes and produced billions of damages. What can I do as a musician to give my (little) help in this tragedy? Well, make music. Having featured on the Riviera Disco compilation series it’s time that Donald Dust returns to Bordello. This time the Scottish artist is back with a five track EP in the form of Nausea. Bending ideas and styles, the Edinburgh producer serves up a sample strewn, italo-infected grenade. Clean chords and percussion are sullied by hoarse vocals as arpeggiators grind and growl. Drum patterns stagger and stumble in the bleary eyed house-streaked “Sick Your Own Mix” of the original. The listener is never sure where Mr Dust is going to take them with influences and surprises coming in equal measure. “Noise in the Stairwell” is an electro stalker, bolts juttering and jangling in this work of vocoder-scented giallo funk. The styles continue to be melted into new sound forms on the flip with two versions of Jupiter Jack. The “Groove Mix” takes the staccato stabs of new beat and supercharges them with punishing percussion and a good helping of dancefloor devilment. Leading us in to the wee hours of the after, the “Jupiter Mix” leans on the darker tones and rusted up rhythms for a final body jack before the realisation that work starts in eight hours.

Ricardo Baez draws on many influences. Electro, house, synth-pop and italo are pillars of the Italian artist’s unique style. The Florence based musician arrives at the Bordello with On and On. Featuring Curses, the opener is a floor-filler. Known for his EBM-stained wave works, this vocal mix is a late night Summer romp. Crisp percussion and warm bass lines usher in addictive hooks and throaty vocals from Luca Venezia. The original version follows. Lyrics are stripped back allowing the upbeat synth play to take the limelight. Cascading notes announce the flip. “Sfida Notturna” is built on delicate drum patterns and arc of string before breaking to a heady dawn. “Dietro L’orizzonte” brings the curtain down. Toms and cinematic synthlines introduce rasping rhythms and vocoder samples. The piece is perfectly measured, fragile keys ascend next cymbal crashes and computer voice. Sumptuous sounds from the north of Italy.
