On the next Light my Fire release, ‘Try’, Borka & The Gang serve up three thunderous tech house tracks that marry grooving garage drums, funky bass-lines and areal synths. Little is known about the mysterious Borka and his gang as they prefer to let their productions speak for themselves, yet their maiden release hints at some serious studio knowledge. Title track ‘Try’ is a straight up party bomb, consisting of cheerful key stabs and a tough, tech-driven bass-line framed by jacking percussive elements. Next up, ‘Lose Track’ seems built for a more laid-back mood as the looped vocal hook and deep sub-bass are lifted by elevating synths. Lastly, ‘Ouh’ is classic 2-step with its grooving rhythm and slightly melancholic vibe.

January is the month for dreaming, or so the saying goes and there’s more than enough on 2020’s Dots and Pearls 6 to satisfy the wildest flights of fantasy, as Cocoon Recordings invites well known international artists to once again rub shoulders with some of the freshest new talents around.  

First up, Eduardo de la Calle & Romina Cohn’s “I’m Losing My Mind“ does a decent job helping us lose ours. Taking the classic DBX template as a start point, Cohn‘s random, spaced out musings elevate things to another level as they filter through all manner of machinery, bathing the hypnotic percussion in a lysergic glow. Fabe’s “Call of Origin“ pulls no punches either, the energetic, bass driven intro bouncing its way centre stage before expanding into lush open spaces with occasional melodic scatters and washes of warm pads that radiate good vibes.

Over the last couple of years, Adana Twins have rightly consolidated there position at the top table, so it’s a pleasure to have them on board with “Origo“. Like snake charmers relentlessly teasing and twisting the infectious hook line in all manner of directions, they demonstrate complete control of their art, pushing all the right buttons to bring things nicely to the boil. As with all Cocoon compilations the deeper you dive, the stranger the vibe and Juan Sanchez delivers a dose of trance-inducing, minimal techno. Abiding by the same dogma as the track before, “Narcissus“ offsets a constantly morphing hypnotic hook line with raw, stripped 909 beats in a classic mid 90‘s style.

Michael Klein’s “Continuation“ maintains the intensity as Cocoon’s Techno Tardis transports the listener even further back to a sweaty early nineties warehouse. It could be London, it could be Berlin... wherever it is, it sure sounds like home. Rico Puestel then snuffs out the candle, plunging us back into darkness. With “Perpetua Mobilia“ he unleashes a deep, prowling beast of a track that reminds us that just when you think you‘ve got a handle on Cocoon, it sheds its skin again, revealing yet another mask behind the mask.

As we motor on towards morning, Radu Dracul adds some bite to proceedings with “Spectrae“, a slow burning psychedelic trip with gently percolating acid lines that smooth out the rough textures of the preceding tracks before giving way to a cavernous breakbeat inflected breakdown. And then finally, Joe Metzenmacher and Borka & The Gang close out the collection, paying homage to the melodic side of Detroit with the quirky, idiosyncratic yet ultimately beautiful “Magic Talk“. It surrounds the dance floor in a warm embrace as keys, strings and bass combine effortlessly to produce a priceless moment of collective euphoria that sees us safely home.

Born in Berlin in 1985, Joe Metzenmacher's family fled to Walsrode, Heideton's homebase, before the wall came down. He went on a personal journey of discovery back to Berlin several years ago, spending many an evening (and morning) in the Panorama Bar, the inspiration for previous single, 'What's The Secret Word For Tonight', but has returned back to Walsrode to build the Heideton empire alongside cohort Borka & The Gang. Borka, born and raised in Russia, made his music-making debut in 2013 on Oliver Koletzki's Light My Fire with the EP Try. Subsequent to that he's released a series of productions that cover a vast array of bases, from the spiritual Rain on Disco Balls to the abstract, yet punchy, breaks-led Heidefunk on Heideton. The pair combined perfectly with 'Magic Talk', says Joe of the original, "Understand who you are, see who is around you, feel the moment and move in the here and now with your surroundings." Inarguable, whichever way you view it. 

Unsurprisingly, this remix package comes with a Detroit-imbued thread running through it. Tuff City Kids, the German pairing of Gerd Janson and Lauer, incorporate Detroit influences alongside add some European know-how without losing the central theme of the track, adding some serious punch to its under-carriage

German techno titan, Timo Maas joins forces with the Stripped Down label for a brand new single ‘Utopie’, backed with remixes from Digital 21 & Stefan Olsdal and Joe Metzenmacher & Borka & The Gang. Timo Maas has been a constant presence on the electronic music stage since the mid Nineties, rocketing to global super stardom off the back of his hugely popular ‘Dooms Night’ remix. Season’s on the white isle, a constant touring schedule and a raft of releases for some of the best labels followed, with music dropping on the likes of Perfecto, Bush, My Favorite Robot, Mobilee and of course his own Rockets and Ponies imprint. Now, the Hannover based artist joins forces with Claudio Ricci’s excellent Stripped Down Records for his latest musical offering which features vocals from Rottler. ‘Utopie’ is a stripped back and hypnotic affair that marries spoken word vocals over a sparse but enthralling soundtrack. Subtle sound design and understated drum programming make this a deep and discerning cut that is sure to bring new fans to both label and artist. The first of the remixes comes from Digital 21 & Stefan Olsdal , which sees the Spanish producer team up with the Placebo bassist for something rather special. Maas has in fact a long standing relationship with the band, having remixes previous Placebo singles and featured singer Brian Molko on his own productions. Here, Olsdal and Digital 21 deliver a mesmerising mix that fuses Batucada style rhythms with a powerfully cinematic string section, making this a a hugely dramatic opus. Finally, Joe Metzenmacher & Borka & The Gang turn in a dark edged and techy reworking that provides a perfect closer to this superb package. With more remixes of ‘Utopie’ to come later in the year, and Timo’s remix of Rodriquez Jr.’s ‘Blisss’ dropping on Mobilee soon, this is shaping up to be a super productive year for the musical maestro. From a residency at the ground-breaking Circoloco at DC10 in Ibiza, where he has been entrenched for over 15 years, to tours around Europe and the rest of the world, Timo Maas maintains a high level of performance.
The visionary German also dedicates his time to conjuring up fresh new original productions in his studio for his Rocket and Ponies label, along with remixes for a plethora of superstars, from Madonna to Depeche Mode, and Fatboy Slim to Muse.
Timo has retained a love and passion for making and playing music that is indelibly etched into his psyche, and it makes him the man he is today; driven, positive, infinitely creative, and full of magic.

Boris Graus aka Borka & The Gang, is an electronic music producer from Hanover, Germany. At the end of the 90's he started to produce electronic music in different genres. Today, Borka and his gang of different musicians focus mainly on house and breakbeat, although he likes to bring in influences from jazz, funk and world music. His style is characterized by driving beats and basslines with many deep elements and emotional melodies. Borka's first release "Try" was in 2013 on Oliver Koletzki's label "Light My Fire" who received strong support in the scene. Since then he has had numerous digital and vinyl releases on labels such as Cocoon, Apparel, Heideton, SOSO, trndmsk, The Disco Express, theBasement Discos, House Salad Music and many more. Borka collaborated and remixed artists like Timo Maas, Oliver Schories, Kathy Brown, Greentea Peng and many more.
