For the second release on his new label The Soundgarden, Nick Warren has captured stateside producer Joey Fehrenbach and the evocative single “Wolves”. Joey Fehrenbach has been active in electronic music for almost two decades, first with his project Dream Traveller – responsible for many dance floor favorites championed by the likes of Sasha, John Digweed, and Scott Stubbs – and then, starting in 2006, under his given name. It was as Joey Fehrenbach that his albums Mellowdrama and Don’t Wake Me were released, topping downtempo and chill-out charts and gaining fans for his lush, tightly produced sound. Nick Warren was one of these fans, and he included Joey’s “Behold” and “Being Around You” on the Global Underground – Paris compilation.

Joey’s new single for The Soundgarden, titled “Wolves”, takes cues from his dance floor past and recent downtempo influences to reveal a mid-tempo four-on-the-floor indie dance track filled with exciting melodies and textures. A John Carpenter-esque bass synth sequence introduces the track as crisp percussive layers and a hypnotic lead line float into its sonic space. Dramatic chord changes and wistful pads add to the cut’s emotional factor, resulting in late night chills.

Nick Warren is joined by Tripswitch (Iboga Records, Section Records) for a driving remix of “Wolves”. The tempo is increased a tad but the expressive vibe remains firmly intact. The main synth line is complimented by warm sub-bass as the insistent rhythm guides the listener through the remix’s pensive build. Vocoded pads, spacey treatments, and the original’s melodic line bring the track to its gorgeous breakdown. A subtle, funky guitar riff is introduced before the mix goes into overdrive, with a masterful transition to a moving section that conveys a night out at Moonbase Alpha’s discotheque.

Coquelicot defines an experience and captures an emotion, rather than just being a record. The track got its name from a French vernacular name for the wild corn poppy but can also describe a shade of red. The composition takes you on a calm ride of building strings that explode to make one blissful climax before it leaves out on a high.

James Zabiela’s debut release on his long-awaited label is announced. ‘The Healing’ is out now with the strongest of remix packages. The legendary and much loved Hot Chip lead the way with Midland, Gang Colours and Club Root in addition. James also contributes his own ‘85’ re-edit.

The original is a beautiful and expansive piece of music with vocals from James.
The Gang Colours remix will be given away as an exclusive download, easily the dreamiest of remixes on this package Gang Colours delivers a cinematic take on the track. Hot Chip made their mix almost entirely live; with signature HC drive it still retains a strong nod to James’ original. Midland recorded his onto cassette tape for added warmth and crackles on the line; and for those not yet turned onto Club Root this atmospheric mix carries far further than his so called ‘bass’ routes…

The Music

This was a really fun project to work on right the way through. It started with some glitchy beats and a couple of big basslines I was messing around with, with a general idea of a deep but almost overpowering feeling. Kathrin came to my little studio in London and we talked a little about the idea, before she just let go and free-style sang over the loops, using my crappy little test mic I bought for 12 pounds in 2002.

The plan was to lay down some melodic ideas for the vocals, which I could then select, and send back to Kathrin to write lyrics with and re-record properly. But when I ran through everything after I released she'd just nailed it right then and there! All I had to do was layer up some of the multiple instances of her voice, and add my reverbs and widening with some subtle EQing and compression, and it was there - she captured the pure feeling of the music and enhanced it a million times, and I love the free-flowing feeling of it, with its imperfections and half words, and of course, he subconscious vocal of not feeling any more lead to the title and concise concept for the music.

We knew that we had to get a video made to match Kathrin's work, and I was really excited to find out that Henning M. Lederer, who I had been a big fan of for some time, could do the project. We discussed options together and decided to try a "numbed by the capitalist machine" theme, which he has developed into an amazing, detailed story with a twist. I love the result, I hope it works for you too! - The video will be released in a few days, I'll put the link HERE when it's ready!
