Virgil Abloh x Braun “functional art” – March 2021 
 
“Internationalism” is a diverse and varied track. It refers to International Style, or internationalism, a major architectural style that was developed in the 1920s and 1930s, which was closely related to modernism and modern architecture. Braun’s Dieter Rams is a modernist hero and, to mark the brand’s 100th anniversary in 2021, Virgil Abloh has reimagined one of its iconic products, the 1965 Wandanlage HiFi wall unit.  The result is “functional art” where design bridges form and function with art.  
 
The track was conceived by Virgil Abloh™️ in collaboration with The Chopstars, the epochal Houston sound designers; the net result being chopped and screwed jazz classics. The track itself is an audio expression of the thesis in which parallels can be drawn in reference to The Chopstar process, which relates to the design process followed with Braun for the “functional art” piece. The hallmark of the work is rooting the industrial design and existence of the Canon to embody Black culture in a specific way that Houston brand of music specifically achieves - the Chopped not Slopped sonic texture picks up where design leaves off.

To mark Mic’s birthday, a live recording will be released on September 21st of a full concert by him.

Called ‘Live At The Lobby’, it was recorded twenty years ago in the now closed legendary Cork venue. The clock ticked midnight during the gig, marking Mic’s 32nd birthday - his last with us.

Such are the legends surrounding Mic’s gigs at The Lobby, The Irish Independent recently named them amongst the top ten gigs that Irish people lie about attending!

People need lie no more as they get a front row seat at Mic Live At The Lobby courtesy of an audience recording made by Emmett Murphy. The audio has been mastered and cleaned by Aidan Foley at Masterlabs but this is unashamedly a rough recording.

What makes it such a vital release is the opportunity it offers to experience a Mic gig. ‘Heyday’ is getting one million plays a year on Spotify alone and the vast majority of people who listen to Mic’s music never got to see him play.

There are no less than five previously unreleased Mic songs on this album which is a huge treat for the many listeners who adore his 'Skylarkin' album. They are Opera Song, Sassy, Wide Open Room, Doin' Better and When We Caught The Moon.

Glen Hansard is a special guest for the encores of the gig. The encores include songs by Bob Dylan and Michelle Shocked which Mic and Glen played together in their busking days.

Mic Christopher is one of the best and most popular singer-songwriters Ireland has ever produced. Prior to going solo Mic had been lead singer of The Mary Janes, In 2001, Mic released his debit solo EP, Heyday, and toured the US, Europe and Ireland. His live shows have become legendary, due not only to his fantastic songs but also his rapport with his audience. Mic’s only solo album, ’Skylarkin’, was released posthumously in November 2002 and went on to win the Meteor award from best Irish album of that year.
Mic was the dude of dudes and all who ever met him felt that way. Mic The King.

** PRESENTING THE FIRST OFFICIAL REISSUE PROJECT FROM MUSIC IS MY SANCTUARY ***

Born out of an era of occupied squats and DIY artist spaces, the Geneva-based “total art” collective had to cross an ocean to start finding an audience.

For us, the love affair with Black Citron’s music started when we first came in contact with two of their tracks appearing on a very obscure Montreal-based compilation titled ‘L’Album Blanc Vol. 2″.

Their music was experimental and groovy. Minimal and free. Organic and electronic. A sound which you’d have a hard time defining accurately without naming tons of different other genres and bands. One thing was for sure, it sounded cutting edge even by today’s standards.

As we started digging and investigating into the story of these two tracks we soon found out that they actually didn’t originate from our home city of Montreal, but were by a group from Switzerland who recorded them here in the late 80’s in the legendary Foufounes Electriques venue.

Black Citron were a collective of artists that had core members but also had others that would appear based on the project. Musicians, Designers, Photographers. The lead singer Evelyne Schumacher mentions the label “art total” as the best definition overall of the philosophy.

We fell in love with Black Citron, their music, story and artistic approach so much that we embarked on a project to create an anthology of all their work. An archival project we are happy to announce will get an official reissue on vinyl in full collaboration with the collective from Switzerland.

As a first taste of their music, here is “Revolution Rap” released in 1986 on a 7″ private press record under the Clinik alias. An incredible slice of experimental rap / post-punk / minimal drum machines. This track somehow gained an audience in Montreal and open up some doors for the band to travel to Canada and start the cross-Atlantic collaboration.

Although the recorded history Black Citron’s music only spans four years, they made some of most daring and revolutionary songs of that era. It has been a really incredible pleasure for us to dive deep in their catalog to gather their tracks which are spread out on vinyl and cassettes.

As a second preview, a taste of the upcoming reissue project, let’s jump forward to the last record Black Citron released officially, in 1990. Feast your ears on “Les Nouveaux Bisons.

We are in the final stages of gathering tracks, photos, prints in full collaboration with the band. We are beyond excited to bring all of this stunning music together on the definitive retrospective of Black Citron’s music.
