“Temanku dari Bali, seorang sutradara film dokumenter, membuat suatu film tentang suku Anak Dalam Jambi berjudul Dan Rimba Sudah Habis. Isunya adalah soal ruang hidup yang semakin sempit. Ketika sedang dalam proses pembuatan film, diketahui bahwa masyarakat di sana dikenal dengan tradisi nyanyian pantun bernama seloka. Mbak Sinta (Oktania Retnani, sang sutradara) meminta beberapa tokoh masyarakat untuk menyanyikannya. Dan salah satunya yang paling membuat trenyuh adalah nyanyian si Bapak ini... ”

Mentahan rekaman nyanyian lelaki tua itu lalu dijadikan bahan utama oleh Gigih untuk menggarap sebuah lagu bertajuk “Seloka”. Lagu ini menjadi musik pengiring Dan Rimba Sudah Habis yang bisa disimak di sini (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhcEOpaF8Oo). Sembari mendengarkan keluh kelah orang asli Suku Anak Dalam Jambi di film dokumenter itu, iringan piano yang nyenyai beralun, melatari nyanyian seloka yang kurang lebih bisa diterjemahkan sebagai penuturan akan “rumah kita tak ada lagi, dan pertanyaan-pertanyaan akan masa depan anak cucu kita...”

Seloka

Lalu-lalang kendaraan mulai jarang terdengar. Satu-persatu kawan mulai tidur dan bersiap dengan urusan masing-masing. Rokok juga tak banyak yang tersisa. Kopi hanya tinggal ampasnya. Ini artinya sudah lewat tengah malam. Aku harus melirihkan suara nyanyianku. Tetanggaku pernah melempariku dengan kerikil sembari memuji dengan nada tinggi, “Suaramu bagus mas, kurang keras!”.

Kini, yang tersisa cuma aku dalam sepertiga malam yang hening.

Konon, sepertiga malam adalah waktu paling mustajab untuk berdoa. Dulu kukira alasannya adalah jumlah hamba pesaing yang minim, tapi kukira bukan itu. Pada waktu ini ada keheningan, yang padanya seluruh emosi terasah menajamkan diri. Rasa sepi, marah, kecewa, rindu, gelisah, dan kadang syukur seolah menguat berkali lipat di sepertiga malam. Mungkin untuk mendapat doa yang mujarab kita memang perlu jadi emosional.

Namun saya jarang berdoa. Emosi yang luap akhirnya mewujud jadi lirik dan nada yang sekarang menjalar ke kuping anda. Semua lagu itu, saya ciptakan di sepertiga malam dengan cara bergumam. Selamat mendengarkan, Gumam Sepertiga Malam.

In conjunction with the celebration of Netlabel Day on 14th July 2017, the duo electronic Bottlesmoker from Bandung, Indonesia, has released their latest album, Parakosmos. The album itself is the first album-series to welcome the anniversary celebration of Yes No Wave Music.

The philosophy of Parakosmos lies on the journey of a person in a singular world of harmony surrounded by contrast. Parakosmos is a bundle of stories about togetherness in nature, which Bottlesmoker believe that harmony relies on two opposite things.

The main ideas throughout all the songs are about artistic rituals carry out by indigenous people in a rural area of Indonesia. The traditional ritual is a natural expression to preserve sense of balance in life.

The word Parakosmos is taken from two different meaning: Paracosm often describe as imaginary world. While the words Paradoks and Kosmos merged and create one whole new meaning which explain that everything in the universe created in pair, opposite, black and white, men and women, dark and light, and so on.

Anggung Suherman (Angkuy) and Ryan Adzani (Nobie) tried to explore unusual approach to work on this album. They did unique collaboration with American ethnomusicologist, Palmer Keen, who once carried out field recording in many locations in Indonesia. Keen managed to record and collect various exceptional sound-bite from traditional music instruments in Indonesia and documented each of them under the name of AuralArchipelago.

Parakosmos is an album which demonstrates the way Bottlesmoker give musical respond toward Aural Archipelago. They soaked up the powerful energy and values from the traditional ritual and release them into original experiences.

There are two different concepts performed by Bottlesmoker throughout the creative process in the making of this album. First, they adapt the way in which the traditional instruments played, such as the musical beat of ‘kendang’ to the rhythm repetition of ‘tarawangsa’. Second, to record singing voice of solo to choir, from Beluk performance in Tasikmalaya, to Panggaiyang in East Sumba which become the main vocalization in the album of Parakosmos.

There are 10 songs which has become one tale of a person from ‘bottom’ to ‘up’, inspired by the ritual and cultural values in ancient Indonesia. It has strong connection with harmony in nature.

‘Parakosmos’ is the fourth album from Bottlesmoker, as well as the most exceptional album with different concept and outstanding sounds.

Bottlesmoker produces self made instrument with a bending circuit process. Angkuy and Nobie love toy musical instruments such as Glockenspiel, Hand Bell, Melodica, and any toys that produces any sounds like Toy Phones, Radio, Nintendo DS. Angkuy and Nobie also capable to produce and combine different sounds from different instrument as a harmony. Beside that, Bottlesmoker too create a custom music instrument such as Noise Box, Theremin, 8 Step Sequencer, and those facts make Bottlesmoker produce such a characterized sounds that no other musicians have. 

In their musical creation process, Bottlesmoker has inspired a lot by musicians such as Lullatone, Dan Deacon, and Tidy Kid. Also Angkuy and Nobie too inspired by their environment and surroundings, with this, their music has become one personal, intimate sanctuary, that successfully transferred to their audience. Like a happy place where you do your daily activities, a home, a company to sleep to, to ride to, to read to, to make art to, etc.
