Mastering engineers are the unsung heroes of the music making process. They spend countless hours alone in soundproofed rooms fine-tuning the music of other producers. In underground house and techno the right mastering can be almost as important as the track itself, so it’s surprising how often they go without mention on releases. In the track title you’ll see original artist, remixer, vocalist, but never mastering engineer, who is usually relegated to a mention on the vinyl credits if it’s lucky enough to be pressed to wax. 

For those who aren’t sure what mastering is, you could maybe say it is to audio what Photoshop can be to the image. 5 years ago when we started Gruuv we didn’t fully understand its importance, but since Marc Romboy introduced us to this guy we’re convinced, and on big systems the difference is obvious. He understands our sound and presents the best version of the music. So we thought why not let him loose on our early Gruuv catalogue and get them remastered to his great standard.

Crosstown Rebels present the centrepiece from the new solo album ‘Flourish’ by Damian Lazarus. On the album’s standout track ‘Into The Sun’, Lazarus is joined by vocalist Jem Cooke to create something beautiful amongst the chaos. Jem Cooke needs little introduction. Her features and song writing are a veritable who’s who - a discography that includes tracks with. Camelphat, Jamie Jones, Zero7, Hot Since 82, amongst many others.

Flourish is far from a box of functional DJ tools, in the same way as Damian’s debut album Smoke The Monster Out or the more worldly outings in his brace of albums with the Ancient Moons. It’s a personal, brave and varied body of work. It’s also the work of an artist who has grown over the ten years since his last solo album. Lazarus plays with nuances of texture, tempo and style to create a rich and dense album that takes us on an odyssey that is at times both dark and uplifting. Vocals of his own cast an intimate shadow over the album with those of his sole collaborator Jem Cooke offering a soothing balance amidst the madness.
