T.Wan - AFTERS Heady Mix

Punk house and techno from a modern Midwest icon.

Every DJ has their own genesis story: a pivotal sound, a formative scene, a defining philosophy. In Kiernan Laveaux's case, her philosophy, rooted in psychedelia and experimentation, sets her apart. Inspired by Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode and New Order, she came of age in Cleveland’s acid house and queer party scenes, developing an ethos that constantly pushes dance music’s limits. Her DJ style is scrambled (in the best way), with zany tricks like scratching, creative EQing and modulation.

This approach reflects the Midwest's DIY tradition, where artists thrive in isolation and cultivate a radical disobedience, as seen in contemporaries like Eris Drew and ADAB. As Laveaux recounted in a 2023 interview with GROOVE Magazin, "Titonton Duvante once told me that being a Midwest DJ is about playing music from anywhere and making it sound like a piece of your spirit."

Spanning two and a half hours, Laveaux's RA Podcast showcases this spirit. It’s a testament to her decade-long career, blending tracks from friends and cherished memories into a transcendent mix. It’s "music to shake your hips to and decalcify your pineal gland." (For the curious, the pineal gland helps regulate your circadian rhythm.) RA.963 will make you dance and think in equal measure—a beautiful, restless and resolutely wicked journey through a singular imagination.

'For a long time, I felt uncertain about what to play at Honcho for Hemlock Nights. It wasn’t until my friend Kayla (Seelene) asked, “So, you’re just going to play the Bobby afters classics, right?” that I began to break through the doubt. While this set includes a lot of new music for me, I took comfort in the tracks I often share with friends at home. My goal was to create a more intimate and personal space to introduce myself to a new audience.'

Ciel, real name Cindy Li, is a music producer, DJ, pianist, and radio presenter based in Toronto and originally from Xi'an China.

As one of the most prominent exports out of Toronto, she has graced the decks at world-class clubs like Berghain’s Panorama Bar, De School, Robert Johnson, Nowadays, and fabric.

Now becoming known as a prolific producer, Cindy has released music on labels such as Peach Discs, Naïve, Terrafirm, Ghostly International, Studio Barnhus, Mister Saturday Night, !K7 Records, Lucky Me, Planet Euphorique, Jacktone, XKalay, Unknown - Untitled, as well as Eris Drew's Ecstatic Editions whilst collaborating with artists like D Tiffany, Dan Only, Priori, Ali
Berger, & Kilig.

Being a founding member of the Toronto electronic music label Parallel Minds, Ciel is also a member of the globally recognized women and LGBTQIA+ DJ collective Discwoman and has produced a monthly radio show on Rinse FM in London, UK since 2018.

A pillar of the new American wave of queer underground house and techno, Honcho is a resident party at the infamous Hot Mass club in Pittsburgh and it also has become known for their annual Honcho Campout festival. Q. What inspiration did you draw upon when planning this mix, and what type of listening environment could you imagine it being easily enjoyed in? 

A. I actually looked through my rekordbox history from a recent Animalia night I played in Naarm and drew some inspiration from that. When listening back to the mix I can imagine it being played for a semi-casual game of Futsal or something like that. I feel like there are some light-footed tracks in there that would be useful to some nimble futsal players. 

Q. Are there any songs in the mix that are especially close to your heart, and what is it about these cuts that resonate with you so much?

A. Mata by Nidia & Valentina

It's taken off  a truly sublime Album that I draw lots of inspiration from. It's simultaneously organic and loose and club-playable, which is a tough one to get right. It's something I’m constantly trying to achieve but they seem to have done it effortlessly.

I actually tried to google to see if I’ve ever put this tune in another guest mix before. I probably have, so I’ll apologise for that now. Cliques has always had a big influence on me since I started producing music. They’ve since stopped producing themselves which is a shame but I always play their old tunes out if I can. RIP Cliques..

Q. One of the things I’ve been fascinated with in your DJ sets (the Sustain-Release set for example) is your mixing of polyrhythms to seamlessly bridge tempos throughout a set. How did you first get inspired to experiment with this style and what are some of otherwise conflicting genres/sounds that have blended nicely?

A. My DJing style is at times an extension of my music production. I think this might be a good example of that. The sustain release transition from 150 to 100 is using a tune that I produced years ago in a 3/4 time signature. I’ve produced a few tunes over the past few years that are able to do that. It just allows me at times to bounce around to different worlds and stops me from feeling stuck in a tempo-range. I haven’t done it so much recently but I’d like to get back into doing it. It can create a really strange feeling for the audience. At Sustain-Release, a lot of the audience were on hallucinogens so it felt appropriate to get trippy in that way. It's harder to pull off in a nightclub environment.

I’m no longer sure what the original inspiration for experimenting with this style was. Playing a lot of tunes that have a polyrhythm in them can often make you feel like you have the option to dance at two different tempos.

Inspired by personal experience and history, Butler sets concepts into motion with intellectually informed but emotionally mediated sounds. Butler is one half of Boyz2Them with Bounce alum and Philadelphia favorite Adab. With releases on labels like Opal Tapes, T4TLUVNRG, Fixed Rhythms, Left Hand Path, and Mister Saturday Night, Butler's production touches on classic house and machine-music-techno, with some slamming queer nonbinary anthems you may very well have heard on our dancefloor.

Bounce House is a die-hard DIY project in Philadelphia - a venue, a vibe, a fervent underground heartbeat thumping in a small room in a labyrinthine Philadelphia warehouse. Those who follow the beat find themselves in a foggy vortex, on a pulsing dancefloor, in a cauldron of melting hearts and minds, anchored in the spirit of the rave. These are the transmissions from the Bounce House dancefloor, sonic snapshots of what we see as the real-deal rave, in its many forms, flavors, visions, and aspirations. 

These recordings are performed by hometown heroes, accelerating up-and-comers, Philly faves, contemporary living legends, and Bounce House residents Furtive, DJ Anarres, and Nail Salon. These are the artists who have moved feet and hearts from night into dawn, and served as guiding soundtracks to all kinds of adventures within Bounce House.
