Another Final Fantasy tribute! This time, its from the breakaway series, Final Fantasy XIII. "Wish" is the title track for the second instalment, Final Fantasy XIII-2, and also the theme of the female lead of this game, Serah.

The first time I heard this track on the title screen of FFXIII-2, I was immediately gripped. Composed by the frankly godly Masashi Hamauzu-san, I think to me it might be the most emotional (in terms of sad) themes he has composed, if not one of them.

As a Masashi Hamauzu piece, the original features a prominent Hamauzu-san harmonic trademark - the 5-1-4 turnaround. As such, whenever I hear this track, I also hear a little bit of "Someday the Dream Will End" from FFX. Another example is "Mystical Princess" from Musashi Samurai Legend. Yet another (albeit more upbeat) example is the Unlimited Saga battle theme. I opted to go for a piano arrangement, with a few synth splashes here and there, so my version ends up being more mellow. 

I expanded on the original quite a bit in terms of composition, deviating away from the theme for the verse and ending. And when the theme kicks in for the chorus, I employed a lot of interweaving counter melodies featuring chromaticism, facilitated by passing chords in between the major structural chord points. I paid special attention to fleshing out the left hand part. The mix is perhaps a little bit quiet, but the trade-off is I really like the breathing space - so the dynamics of the piano can be better heard.

When I was doing this arrangement, I was actually mostly picturing Lightning, not Serah. Yes, this is very much Serah's song, but I feel that overall, Lightning is still the face of FFXIII, and in my admittedly limited experience with the games, she's the one I felt most connected to in terms of her struggles.
