The result of that is the album Postcards From A Place I've Never Been. For me personally, it's a reflection of my search for inner peace in sound. For you, the listener, it is meant to blend in with sounds from your surroundings. Whether that would be traffic or city noise, everyday conversations, sounds of nature, to form a soundtrack for everyday life that sounds different in every environment."

For the second episode of Lunch__Breaks I've had the pleasure to invite Bevan. I personally always really enjoy Bevan's music selection, this mix is no exception! The episode is focussed on his favourite house vocalists. 

"Bevan’s sets focus around the garage house sounds from the US and EU in the early 90’s, along with choice boogie and soul cuts that preceded it. Memorable hooks, deep basslines and euphoric chords are what makes him tick and are ever-present in his mixes.

He recently establishing his own club night entitled 'Tied Together' in Amsterdam at De Schietclub alongside a monthly radio show on Operator. The concept aims to encapsulate all the different musical influences artists and DJ's go through, from when they first start out listening to music up until new obsessions and finds in more recent months."

For the fourth episode of Lunch__Breaks I've made a selection of my favourite jazz music at the moment. I think it's cool that lots of tracks are being created by super talented artists in the here and now. For example Matthew Halsall, Surya Botofasina, or Jasmine Myra, to name a few that I've been listening to a lot lately. All being surrounded by fantastic band members. Their music is peaceful, daring and makes you feel alive. Later on in the set I've picked some special soul and funk records.

Lunch__Breaks w/ Aram Mukanay

Connection

For the sixth episode of Lunch__Breaks I've recorded a show as a tribute to the music that made my summer. It's dedicated to the music that I've discovered and listened to a lot. A wide variety of genres, but all with a bright summer feeling to it. 

About the first record, Hard Working by Betty & The Code Red, Emotional Rescue (who have reissued this record) wrote a nice background story: 

"Born in Benin in Nigeria in 1954, a youth spent away from home working as a house servant, old Edo folk songs kept memories of home close and hopeful for the future. Returning to Benin to complete schools, his singing progressed to making music. With girlfriend Betty Ajagun, they would use desks, buckets, pots and pans to entertain fellow student on campus, eventually appearing in a singing team on the ‘Music Panorama’ program on national TV. 

Leaving Nigeria in 1967, first to Italy and then on to the USA, to further his studies, he was joined by Betty and when a young family appeared shortly after, he dropped out of college, moving from Florida to Texas, working as an illegal immigrant.

Still singing, he had performed at College and University for tips, accompanied by other students on guitar and percussion. With no formal training, except a musical ear and his skills in computing and technology, Tunde decided to take his love of music and inspirations, from Fela Kuti and Bob Marley, to assemble his own band.

Betty & The Code Red, the idea of promote her singing career and Tunde’s own desire to highlight the “State Of Emergency”, denoting a world crisis of inequality, economic discrimination and conflict (“Wahala”).

Using the music as a non-violent tool to express his socio-political opinions on global injustice, in 1985, they recorded the songs “Hard Working” and “Pretty Baby”, which were self-released on 7” and was soon followed by a 5-song album, “Na Wahala”. The unique sound, an amalgam of influences, surroundings, experience, studio and equipment, lends the music a lo-fi, left field quality, mixed with a beguiling naivety and hope felt in the songs – the result of heavily using the then relatively new Yamaha RX7 (keys), SY77 (bass) and DX7 (drums) – to underpin the vocals.

That, however, was all to appear, as personal and financial strains led to no further recordings to see the light of day. These private press gems were lost, so obscure they have never been part of diggers circles, arriving today almost as rediscoveries for all."
