A few more hours to while away

The Night Bus

I am riding with the early morning workers
Swaying as the night-bus limps along
I've been up all night, they've just been wrenched from sleep
A dozen bleary eyes are fixed on me

But I am busy staring out the window
At the world beyond these scratched-up panes of glass
I've not seen a sunrise like this in years
A smile is slowly spreading on my face
I'm the only one with a smile on their face

And the weekend doesn't mean that much, when you don't dread the week
Except you get to hang out with, all your mates that do
And the parties always end too soon, but start in the same way
What do you do for a living? Well, it's kind of hard to say

One road leads to almost certain boredom
Take the other path and you will surely starve
There's not much to choose from, but it's still a choice

A World Without You

Nobody thought it would happen
Things seemed like they’d stay the same forever
The end of the world even took the pessimists by surprise

At first some still tried to deny it
Then everyone tried to blame everyone else
Like they’d done before in a stalled motorway traffic jam
Slowly they made the connection
By then it was decades too late

Nobody knew how it happened
The weather was ever so strange that winter
But we were inside safely watching it on the TV

The story was strangely familiar
When reality finally made itself felt
Everyone said it just seemed like a scene from a film
We had fun staring at our reflection
How rude of the world to intrude

The tarmac is cracked - The weeds claim it back
The cockroaches come out to play
Our world starts to rust - The air tastes so sweet
The memory is fading away

Wrapped up in these
Beautiful stories
Now we are naked and ashamed
Eden was built for the few

Now the survivors must sift through the wreckage
Looking for parts of the past to reuse
This time around retro kitsch just seems sick and absurd

There’s no escape now from nostalgia
The ground is still studded with trinkets and toys
This plastic debris will outlive us by hundreds of years
So many cheap keepsake reminders
Of just how good things used to be
