Twice a year, Stede’s father begrudgingly hands the black credit card to Bitsy. It always goes the same way. He holds out the card, and when she reaches for it he snatches it back. “Spend enough to make an impression, Bits. But not too much of an impression.” Bitsy smiles and says, “Of course, dear.” Then he hands over the card for real.

Stede hates that part, but it’s necessary to get to the part where he and Bitsy are driving up to the mall, listening to the Oldies station the whole way. The part where Stede passes up the promising smell of soft pretzels and cinnamon buns and opens the gleaming doors of Hornigold’s department store. He always holds the door for his mother. She always laughs and says, “What a gentleman!”

And inside — oh, the inside of Hornigold’s is something everyone should see at least once in their lives.
