The signal chain for this track was as follows: Guitar; Brawley A-122 Threat in quasi-standard tuning (as I didn't tune it and just played what it was previoulsy tuned to), Mesa Dual Rec sim into 4x12 w/v30 sim, output to small 4" guitar speaker mic'd with a vintage SM-57. The Tom Scholz method of making tracks big with small amps. 4 Rhythm tracks (left, right, 10% left and harmony 10% right). Lead tracks on 4 separate tracks (2 split wide left/right and 2 centered). All tracks dry, no external EQ and only a small amount of delay on the wide lead tracks for ambience. Drums were just junk tracks from EZDrummer. No Bass.

Went soft back in '96 and attempted to write/record/produce a lighter track. Nobody would play with me on this one so everything you hear was performed by me...kind of my one man boy band homage.

The acoustic performance was actually kind of interesting since I used 3 separate mics and had to 'skooch' the tracks by ear to fix some minimal phase issues. All tracks were recorded direct to digital (Akai DR series) and tape. The tape tracks were then played back into digital and moved to sync up with the track. All-in-all there are 24 separate tracks (16 digital and 8 synced synth tracks). 

Never Get Over You

Track was recorded back in 1995. Bass, Keys, Vocals and BG Vocals performed by James McCullum, Drums performed by Tony Providence, Guitars and BG Vocals performed by Barry Papina. Everything was recorded digital via Akai DR4d recorders. Great song to play on and stands up pretty well for being almost 20 years old.

TBT Track. I recorded this track back in '89. Bel Biv Devoe can thank me for advancing the 'new jack swing' beat in a rock/pop context. Anyway...I recorded this track at RO Studios in Northern California and it was mixed by the Henry Brothers who did all of Eddie Money's tracking back in the day. All guitars were recorded in a live room using a Rockman XP-100 amp and JBL 4x12s. There was a SM-57 close up on the cab and a U87 in the room picking up the ambience. Kinda bummed that the guitars were so low in the mix cause the sound was killer (loved that amp!).

Obsessive Possession - Barry Papina

TBT: One of my favorite collaborations when I lived in Nashville was with Jared Young who is an incredible songwriter and singer. I contributed all of the music and background vocals to this track. All guitars were tracked through my AxSys 212 amp that I purchased in 1996. I think I was the first studio guitar player in town to own one. It was a great amp and allowed me to create so many textures without dragging a ton of gear to a session. Anyway...that was a lifetime ago.

All acoustics were recorded using an old Epiphone custom that still is the best sounding guitar that I have ever played...go figure...Epiphone.

Breaking Out Of Me

Here's another track I recorded in 1998 with Jared Young in Nashville at my studio. I programmed all of the drums, bass and played 95% of the guitars using my AxSys212 amp.

The feedback in the solo was cool since I shut off the SM-57 on the cab (by accident) and was only using an AT4033 room mic approx 8 feet from the amp and 5-6 feet in the air. Really cool feedback tones from that setup.

Had fun reliving my 80's studio jamming days by jamming over a backing track in the style of old Boz Scaggs stuff. I might have used more delay than Luke used to but it's an addiction...what can I say?!?

Decade In Limbo - Cry Me A River (video release)

I got really inspired by a Phil X vid and poked around with a Helix Plexi with a 10 band EQ in the front of it to give it some extra juice on the input...and damn, I think that was what Eddie was doing definitely (among other things obviously). I noodled a lot...sorry for all of the flubs and nubs, but this was fun as hell to play through. I used a throw together Strat with a really weak humbucker (almost like a single coil) and it really came alive. It's like you can hear how the transformer in the Plexi gets a huge thump in the tone from the front end boost. No delays...just a little verb. Used a 57 and a 121 ribbon mic blended (more 57 than 121) on a Marshall 4x12 with 25 watt greenbacks. Was really going for the Fair Warning type of plexi sound. BTW...I am a total VH hack and don't really know how to play Unchained...but this was a blast to play.

Old VH Marshall Plexi Tone

Used a 2002 Peavey Wolfgang Special (no mods) into a Helix Floor model and used a PV Panama amp sim. No post processing...just straight to the DAW. Total noodling to show off what this guitar can do...It's a beast!!
