Sound work for 2016 Art Pod solo exhibition 'Cultural Precinct'.

In this sound work I invite the audience to question how we define ‘culture’, and ask ourselves whether we are getting the whole story when we step foot inside a museum. 'Cultural Precinct' intends to draw parallels between the disruption of Aboriginal knowledge and culture in the last two and a bit centuries, and the means in which the people affected are able to reconnect and reclaim fragments to assist in the ongoing formation of their cultural identity. 
 Scientific enquiry played a major role in the destruction of culture in Australia, and now it is often also a fundamental part of cultural reconstruction for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. 

As someone who identifies with both my Anglo and Aboriginal heritage, my own cultural identity is simultaneously informed and complicated by European intervention and methods of reconstruction. 
 'Cultural Precinct' highlights connections between the way information has been gathered, stored and accessed and how this affects those seeking to reclaim and reconnect with a culture that has been disrupted or lost.

Sound work for 2015 solo exhibition 'PALM VALLEY'.

This work looks at different genealogies of knowledge, variously Indigenous and European. These systems are distinct, but also potentially complementary, and offer insights that both resist and affirm the other. As a person with both Anglo and Aboriginal heritage, I have to navigate between these systems, which can be complex. European scientific research has played a major role in the erosion and loss of cultural continuity for First Nations Peoples globally. At the same time, the artefacts of this methodology have become significant markers in the reclamation of cultural and family identity. The story of Palm Valley interested me because it provoked reflection on these issues, which I have attempted to translate into this work: the topography of the journey of these seeds and the story with it, interrogated through a discourse on research, knowledge and identity.

This work is inspired by the proposed changes to the Racial Discrimination Act 1975, and the legal proceedings around the Eatock vs Bolt 2011 lawsuit involving Herald Sun columnist Andrew Bolt.  

The audio is produced in collaboration with South Australian musician/film maker Brett Walter.
