At he beginning origins of BB was about tapping into the internal language of digital technology and bypassing the 1s&0s and getting to the heart of it i.e. tapping into it's electrical phenomena internal language akin to our own physiological makeup. It involved connecting a microchip leg with a wire into a mixer and listening to the organic forms, and another microchip legs into a CRT screen to watch its earthly forms. Here is the internal language of a device (HP server) that is integral to the WWW amongst many dotted around the world. They remotely sound sentient.

In 2009 Ian McQuaid & Nitin Lachhani registered the domain name EMIrecordings.com for the art projects online presence. Records were cast in resin at numerous live events where audiences brought their own LP’s to be bootlegged. Miraculously, the resultant negative copies play in reverse i.e. the stylus travels from the inside of the record to the outside edge. 

Legal action in 2010 from E.M.I. Records Ltd claiming trademark infringement saw the demise of the domain name. Accused of cybersquatting and trying to pass off as EMI for gain, McQuaid & Lachhani sought legal advice. It transpired that EMI’s trademark is restricted to the field of Music therefore the project should be exempt as it stands as Art. It was concluded that a potential “test case” was encountered with an indeterminable outcome. Due to the inevitable costly long-drawn-out legal conflict, the domain was transferred to EMI.

The analogue installation makes sound through human interaction. The body harnesses radiation from the screens and passes it to a sound system to make sound! Different screens = Different sounds!

A bank of old tube T.V's and monitors (CRT's) emit electromagnetic fields (EMF’s) which are absorbed by the human body and channeled to a sound system for sonification. Ones proximity to a screen controls the amplitude and each CRT can be independently tuned to emit a desired sound.

Dense improvised population of screens within in a large space makes the entire environment highly interactive. A space is created where subtle movement, walking or running generates sound. Fertile ground for new sound discovery is created as the space becomes saturated with signals which bleed into each other. This is accelerated through audience collaboration where human chains can be formed to share and mix signals. Alternatively, choreography can be used to produce a non-improvised musical performance through an appropriate screen configuration.

 Process Details

1. The screens visualise electrical phenomena through direct copper wire connections to components of functioning electronic consumables such as Radios, synthesizers, signals generators, computers and smartphones. This process exposes the internal language of electronics, in the form of, animated organic patterns specific to the source item.

2. The resultant EMF’s are made audible by standing on a gold surface which is connected to a sound system. The body becomes an aerial and a conduit for the signal to pass to an amplifier and speakers. Note that extensive debate exists on the long-term physiological effects of such emissions (by-products) from domestic electronic equipment.
