These Ghosts

Westside Anthems EP

This is a song I wrote for my hometown of Lahaina, Hawaii. Back in the day, Lahaina was a place of abundance with streams flowing through the town bringing water to crops like taro, breadfruit and coconuts. Over the years that water source was diverted to feed sugarcane and pineapple plantations and, later, resorts and golf courses, leaving Lahaina to become the hot and dry place I knew my entire life. On august 8th, 2023, a wildfire raged through west Maui and taking from us our Ohana along with most of Lahaina town. Homes, schools, churches, buildings that stood for centuries are all gone but, unlike the many precious lives that also lost, these things can be restored. The streams that once fed Lahaina, allowing it to be such a place of abundance that the King Kamehameha chose it for the capital of his newly formed island kingdom, the streams can also be restored. Much was lost over the centuries before the fires and now much of those things have an opportunity to be restored. The homes and businesses will be rebuilt, the trees replanted and then some. Through a generational effort, we will restore the environment to what it once was, bringing the clouds back to the Mauka, allowing for the streams of Lahaina, the once lost soul of Lahaina, to flow again. That’s what this song is about.
