Ethiopian jazz emerged in the 1950s; its unique blend of Jazz,Latin and Caribbean rhythms mixed with the traditional sounds of Ethiopia has captured the minds of listeners throughout the world. It Was pioneered by Mulatu Astatke who is considered by many to be the father of Ethiopian Jazz. He is a composer,musician and bandleader who is now a household name in Ethiopia and known throughout the world. At the age of 16 he was sent to the UK to study by his parents,  first to Lindisfarne College and then to Bangor University. But his love for music got in the way and he soon found himself at Trinity college of music in London. He began playing vibraphone and piano in the clubs of Soho with expatriate African and Caribbean jazz musicians. He left London to continue his education overseas in the USA. and was the first African student at the jazz-oriented Berklee College in Boston. Shortly after he moved to New York to be closer to the jazz and Latin music scene which was booming in new york. In 1969 he returned to Addis Ababa with a vision to blend together the Latin and jazz sound he had grown to love in New York with the sounds of his home which became known as “Ethio-Jazz”. In Addis he returned to discover a booming nightlife filled with musicians and he soon got recording. At first there was resistance to this form of music; some viewed it as western and that it took away from the tradition of their music. But with time its popularity grew and soon bands like the Dahlak Band and The Walias were playing in clubs all over Addis Ababa. Sooner after Aststke was signed to Ethiopia's first independent record label and in 1973 he was chosen to perform with Duke Ellington touring across Ethiopia and Zambia. A few years later in 1978 Haile Selassie was overthrown by the Derg regime  which imposed curfews banning citizens from being out after midnight. But this didn't stop the music. Bands would play into the morning till the curfew was lifted at 6AM. In this time artists like Hailu Mergia grew in popularity performing to wealthy Ethiopians, politicians and diplomats in the Ghion Hotel in Addis as well as gigs for younger audiences in clubs throughout the city. Most people now when you mention Ethio Jazz will mention the 
Ethiopiques series. This series was created by a Paris based world music label know as Bude Musique in 1997, these CDs were compiled of some of the best music from 60s and 70s Ethiopia. The man behind this series is called Francis Falcetto who fell in love with the music after being gifted a Mahmoud Ahmed LP by a friend who had visited Addis. Since then he dedicated a huge part of his life to Ethiopian music, later touring with Mahmoud and began compiling the Ethiopiques series which is now on its 30th release. This mix is an introduction to the beautiful sounds of Ethio Jazz.

Professor Deborah E. Lipstadt, Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University, will speak about ‘Holocaust Denial: A Flat Earth Theory or a Clear and Present Danger?’

Holocaust denial, the attempt to deny that the Third Reich engaged in the annihilation of approximately six million Jews, has been depicted as a serious threat to historical truth. Others have dismissed it as the equivalent of the theory that the earth is flat, i.e. absurd, illogical, and unworthy of serious consideration. In this presentation Professor Lipstadt will explore these two contradictory perspectives on Holocaust denial. In addition, she will explore the difference between “hardcore” or traditional Holocaust denial and the more recent phenomenon of “soft core” denial.

All of a Sudden

Issam Hajali might be most known for being the singer and main composer of the Lebanese band Ferkat Al Ard. While they recorded 3 albums only their classic „Oghneya“ release saw a vinyl release and is probably the most in demand record in the Lebanese record collector scene (A copy changed hands in Beirut this year for 5000$). Before the band came together Issam recorded a debut album under his own name called "Mouasalat Ila Jacad El Ard" in 1977 in exile in Paris. It was originally released in a run of less than 100 copies.
