Jacqueline Rose joins PTO to talk about her new book, On Violence and on Violence against Women. We discussed how psychoanalysis can help us grasp the mental states that make male violence possible, where Jacqueline parts company with the radical feminist perspectives of Catharine MacKinnon and Andrea Dworkin, and how the experience of trans women illuminates more broadly the nature of male violence against women. Finally, we talked about the violent history of South Africa - from the the colonial and apartheid eras up to the present day.

Anthony Burr and Charles Curtis present this collection of curated compositions from Alvin Lucier and Morton Feldman. Two Lucier pieces, August Moon and Trio For Clarinet, Cello & Tuba are presented here for the first time. Liner notes are excerpted from a lecture on Morton Feldman given by Alvin Lucier. 

“For Feldman, dynamics serve an acoustical function. When he mitigates a piano attack he reduces that spike of noise that’s at the onset of every piano sound leaving only the sinusoidal pure after-sound. It’s as if he invented electronic music with the piano.” Alvin Lucier from liner notes. 

“Lucier manages to hear a layer of acoustical physics in Feldman’s music that perhaps no one else would hear. He’s hearing something in Feldman that is actually coming from his own musical world; in a way, hearing his own music in Feldman’s, and drawing inspiration from that.”

darren harper's latest work is a joyous collage for all seasons; a delicate record that soothes and refreshes the spirit.

kaleidoscopic chimes and playful bells tumble against each other. twinkling notes drift down in little flurries, then melt away as sunlit chords push aside the clouds.

low, thrumming bokeh echoes bring distant mountaintops intimately close, then curve down into hushed forest floors, winds whispering through leaves overhead. tiny layers of loops and quiet delays, jumbled melodies, sparse crackling branches, and somber swells invite contemplation of these fragile spaces.

each moment is cherished, each song reveals new life: ephemeral, yet enduring. the ice breaks, slowly gliding away as the river shakes off its long slumber.

never obscuring, always revealing; these intertwining paths abound with the hopeful promise that spring is coming.

In the Summer of 2019 Greig Baird and his family moved home and into a new area of a city they have lived for many years. 

The layers and layers of history in this new locale were palpable and inspired Baird to create this small collection of music, ‘Once Hallowed’. 

This new area was home to a Franciscan Friary established in the 13th century and later home to a church, Allhallows-on-the-Wall built in the 19th century. This church was later a corset factory, then later a parachute factory during war time. The last burials in this place were conducted in secrecy by the light of a midnight moon during the cholera epidemic of 1832. The wall outside Baird’s home dates to Roman times and was once the south-western city limit. 

The burial grounds now deconsecrated and long abandoned are also home to the catacombs of the city. Again abandoned long ago, bodies long removed, tales of stolen skulls and grave robbing, and the stone of which they are built are all that remains. The areas wildlife, dog walkers, children playing, students hanging around, drunks falling asleep on abandoned tombs and the city’s drug dealers plying trade all make the place what it is. Often beautiful as the light changes and Falcons fly above, the sounds of the day city form into the nocturnal; sometimes sad as the desperation of people’s modern situations becomes abundantly clear. 

The relics of the past experienced in our present creates something else. Something deeply inspiring, creating an atmosphere deeply felt and not entirely understood.

Athens-born and Berlin-based producer Hior Chronik has been with KITCHEN. LABEL since 2012 and has recorded two albums under the label, namely "Vanishing Mirror" (2012) as part of the duo Pill-Oh and "Taking The Veil" (2015). Hior Chronik, whose real name is George Papadopoulos, returns to the piano, an instrument that shaped many of his best-loved compositions. 

"Piano Works" is a suite of sixteen piano miniatures defined by stark simplicity and quiet majesty, with the velvet textures of Aaron Martin's cello; the perfect foil for Hior Chronik's piano and electronic subtleties. The seeds for this album were sown in 2016 after Hior moved to Berlin from his hometown in Athens. Finding himself in unfamiliar circumstances, the artist sought solace in composing short piano pieces at the day's end as a personal musical remembrance. Valuing the purity of every note, he never seems compelled to speak more than necessary. This is Hior Chronik at his most intimate and minimal.

An oceanic piano sustain opens the first track in the deep yearning "A Piece of a Living Heart," a prelude to the soul-tugging piano melodies that will follow throughout the album. Hior Chronik coaxes a climatic range of coloristic temperaments that make the scores come alive. The gloaming piano ballad of "Float on"; the emotionally hard-hitting "As I Was Moving Backwards"; the waltz of piano and pizzicato cello of "I Count More on the Things You Ignore" to the dark-hued atmosphere of "When It All Comes Back to You." Closing the album is "Krakow," a serene and hopeful elegy reminiscent of the promise of a new dawn. Hior Chronik's sketching of life collected in "Piano Works" helps us make sense of emotions and provide peace amidst these unprecedented times of uncertainty.

"Piano Works" will be released across all digital formats and as a limited run of 200 cassettes on July 3rd via KITCHEN. LABEL. Chihei Hatakeyama mastered this recording in Tokyo, Japan.
