Curious Opening

This piece was written for the LA Percussion Quartet and was inspired by the music of Steve Reich and Philip Glass (specifically, Reich’s Three Movements for Orchestra and Glass’ Two Pages, which was dedicated to Reich). The piece is scored for two vibraphones and two 5-octave marimbas and was conceived using a mathematical process that never deviated from a specific scale. The scale itself is made up, and was formulated to contain every possible interval in terms of Western notation. The mathematical process was derived from two birthdays (month/day/year format) that were simplified into increasingly smaller numbers that then corresponded with pitches, number of notes in a given measure, times repeated, etc. The idea behind the piece is to also portray a paroxysm, defined as “a sudden attack or violent expression of a particular emotion or activity.” The piece begins constrained, with close intervals and dissonances, and branches into a much larger range with more instruments, pitches, and rhythms clashing and working together simultaneously.
