After Dark Music [ADM] presents: Selections Vol. 03

ADM Selections is back, delivering 10 different tracks from artists you may or may not be familiar with from all across the globe.

Opening the LP, we welcome Clearlight to the label with the track "Cavern Sound,” with almost tribal-like vibes, a haunting atmosphere, and drums that take you on a journey. Khromi's remix of "Fever Mood" is smooth, jazzy, and infused with his own style. Mikrodot's "Monastery" sets the stage for deep, sub-driven vibes, with Tetrad and newcomer Boneless carrying the vibe into deeper territory. Repulsion's "VRR" flips between breakbeats and minimalist influences. Newcomers, Buex & No Compli balance floaty textures of atmosphere with jungle-influenced breakbeats in their track "Ghosts Of Spice." While Inertia changes the direction of the album with his track "Nobody," featuring a massive, thick reverberating subline with a distorted Reese. It segues nicely into the closing tracks by Split and NRB, finishing out the album on a vocal-driven 140 tip. This album explores the broad sound representative of After Dark Music.

Over the past eight years, Ikebe Shakedown has cemented a reputation as one of the boldest, most creative acts in the Brooklyn instrumental scene. Combining cinematic soul, Afro–funk, deep disco, and an irrepressible groove, Ikebe has forged a style all its own. Each song is anchored in the deep-pocketed pulse of its four-man rhythm section (Barnaby Alter, drums; Dave Bourla, percussion; Vince Chiarito, bass; Robin Schmidt, guitar) and driven by one of the tightest horn trios on the East Coast (Mike Buckley, tenor/baritone sax; Jason Colby, trumpet; Nadav Nirenberg, trombone), with tunes ranging from dance-foor burners to lush, captivating scores.

The band frst came on the scene with 2009’s debut EP, Hard Steppin’, from Colemine Records.  Praised by WNYC’s Soundcheck as “the perfect soundtrack for the unwritten Tarantino movie of your imagination,” the five–song release led to tours up and down both coasts and paved the way for Ikebe Shakedown’s first full-length LP on Ubiquity Records in 2011. Recorded at Killion Sound in L.A. with Orgone’s Sergio Rios and Dunham Studios in Brooklyn with noted producer Tom Brenneck, this self-titled album featured 14 blistering tracks that Okayplayer called, “an adventurous trip through time” and “one of the best releases of the year.” Having toured the record throughout the U.S. and Canada, Ikebe returned to the studio in 2014 for their follow up album for Ubiquity, Stone by Stone.  Recorded at Daptone Studios, the 10–song set let the band become more adventurous than ever before, weaving psychedelic textures and raw soul into powerful compositions, or as Wax Poetics called it, “a greasy and sometimes trippy funk world.”

Now, after hitting major jazz festivals, opening on extended runs for stars like Lee Fields, and touring with acts like Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires, and the Monophonics, the seven members of Ikebe Shakedown are poised for their next big release in 2016. The band’s style has continued to evolve, with material that transports listeners beyond their living rooms and builds on the success that has led to musical features in series such as Eastbound and Down, movies like Our Brand is Crisis, and commercials for brands including Mini Cooper, Van’s Off the Wall, and Surfline. The songs are at once richly familiar and incredibly fresh, paying homage to classic influences while pushing a brand new sound. Defying genre or classification, this album proves Ikebe Shakedown is helping define the next bold wave in instrumental music.

Tim Maia was the man.

 A soul superstar with outsize talents and appetites, he revolutionized popular music in his native Brazil in the 1970s. He also married five times, served multiple prison sentences, and at the height of his fame, joined a UFO-obsessed religious cult.

After a decade of legal wrangling, Luaka Bop is set to release ‘Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential Soul of Tim Maia’ a fifteen track survey of Maia’s 1970s recordings, completely remastered, commemorating what would have been the Brazilian musical legend’s 70th birthday on September 28. The release is the fourth in the label’s World Psychedelic Classics series, known for unearthing long neglected masterworks by Os Mutantes, Shuggie Otis, and one of the first compilations of African psychedelia and funk.

Tim Maia’s story is the stuff of legend, and indeed he is the subject of a best-selling biography, TV movie, and hit musical in Brazil. Growing up in Rio, he formed his first band at age 14 and taught local gang members to play guitar. In 1959, aged 17, he illegally emigrated to Tarrytown, NY where he studied communications, worked as a janitor, and formed a new band, The Ideals. Four years later he was jailed and deported for smoking marijuana in a stolen car. He returned to Brazil deeply inspired by American soul music and the civil rights movement and began writing songs in earnest.

Maia’s 1970 debut LP has been called “a massive cannonball into the pool” of Brazilian culture, the ripples of which are still visible today. The album linked Brazilian pop music and American soul in a way that was genuinely new, and it spent 24 weeks on the charts. Other landmark recordings would follow, but in 1976, Maia joined the Racional Energy cult, at which point he shed his vices, dressed in white robes, and performed and recorded only for cult members. Maia would later distance himself from Racional Energy, but the mythos surrounding him only grew. He died, 55 years old and obese, after an onstage heart attack in 1998.
