Central Line were a post-disco, pop and jazz-funk group, based in London, England. They recorded three albums for Mercury Records in the 1980s, and had two hit singles in the United States, as well as one Top 40 success in their native country.

The band was formed in March 1978, and were signed to Mercury Records early in 1979 by John Stainze. The original founding members were Steve Salvari, Camelle Hinds, Lipson Francis and Henry Defoe. Hinds, Francis and Defoe were previously in a band called TFB (Typical Funk Band), which had contained members that would go on to form Light of the World. TFB also contained the drummer Errol Kennedy, who later joined Imagination. Salvari joined TFB after the departure of Kenny Wellington in late 1976, as their second keyboard player and the band members then stood at Salvari, Hinds, Francis, Defoe and Kennedy. The band gigged for about a year then broke up. Francis and Defoe went to work with a bass player who was in Boney M., and Salvari and Hinds staying together to work on various projects.

In early 1978, four of the TFB members got back together, and expanded the previous format by recruiting Linton Beckles and Jake Le Mesurier. The band decided they needed a new identity, and Defoe came up with the name Central Line, because the band were now running down a central line of funk and soul.

They toured with Roy Ayers, Grover Washington, Fat Larry's Band and The Real Thing. Central Line released their first single, "Wot We Got Its Hot" to a good reception, but their second single "Sticks & Stones" did not fare so well. They finished the year appearing on BBC Television's, Linda Lewis' Roadshow.

Salvari left in early 1980. After working with Barry White, Robert Palmer and Sheena Easton, he continues in the music industry as a record producer.

Bassist Hinds later formed Hindsight with Defoe, and also played bass in The Style Council, as well as forming The Walkers with trumpet player Canute Wellington, and releasing "(Whatever Happened To) The Party Groove" / "Sky's The Limit" in 1983.

Francis and Beckles are now dedicated to the church, and Le Mesurier died in the 1990s from an accidental drug overdose.

Despite a club hit with "Walking into Sunshine" which sold well in the United States, and a UK Top 40 hit with "Nature Boy", consistent mainstream success eluded them, and they disbanded in August 1984.

Double Trouble & Amp Fiddler ‘Amp Trouble’ (greg wilson mash-up)

Issued on the Young Dog Alien 12” from 2006, which included ‘Gotta Keep Working It’, one of my best-known mash-ups (http://soundcloud.com/gregwilson/imagination-missy-elliot-gotta) , ‘Amp Trouble’ combined Double Trouble’s ‘Stoop Rap’, from the seminal 1983 Hip Hop movie, ‘Wild Style’, with ‘Intro’ the opening track from Amp Fiddler’s 2004 album, ‘Waltz Of A Ghetto Fly’. Both of these tracks were extremely short, just over a minute a piece in length, but I originally put them together purely as an interlude section for the ‘Do Not Attempt To Adjust Your Radio’ mix I did for the Six Million Steps website in early 2004, not long after my DJ return, so, by nature, it’s the shortest mash-up I’ve ever had pressed up. Despite it not being something I’d play out, due to its length, I really liked the vibe of it and, when I was looking for something to put on the flip of the Young Dog Alien 12”, I felt that, in addition to an Electro cut-up I’d done, which I called ‘Electric Eel’, it’d be a nice little bonus track to include.

Whilst I was preparing a Video Blog post this week, about the amphitheatre climax from ‘The Wild Style’, which includes a performance from Double Trouble, ‘Amp Trouble’ obviously came to mind and I thought I’d tie-in by making it available here.

The relevant part of the post reads: “I have a particular soft spot for Double Trouble, who you see earlier in the film practicing acappella, sat on steps outside a Bronx tenement block. Their rap at this point is super-chilled and laid back (http://youtu.be/nLDJZAgWrJA), but at the amphitheatre, using the same lyrics, they really rip it up, resplendent in white gangster suits and hats. However, this was as good as it got for LiL Rodney C and KK Rock Well, and as Hip Hop went global they were left behind. I always regard them as Rap’s ones that got away”. The full blog post is here:
