On Monday, 20 August 2018, my grandma, Elizabeth, passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. I don't remember much about her - what food she liked, what clothes she wore, what sports she enjoyed, what she thought of this weird old world - although I do remember one thing: Her Music. She didn't make this music, she merely transmitted it, using her voice; the songs of Andy Williams, Aretha Franklin, Shirley Bassey, Louis Armstrong. Yet, even so, it was undeniably all Her Music, irrespective of those who initially brought it to life. It was imprinted on her.

Music, it was one of the few parts of my grandma that held on, clung to life, up until the very end. Names, places, stories, faces, all faded overtime in her memory, whilst the music, it survived. Music survives. 

My grandma isn't the only person who I remember thanks to music. In fact, it's tied into the fabric of knowledge associated with countless people I know, and love, and care for - those I follow through life. It's like a ringtone customised to someone you know very well. You hear a song, and you swear they've just magically appeared. Their appearance could be translated into this imaginary conversation with/in your brain: hello, hello; just coming over to remind you of you-know-who (aka. me); now, as you were. It's a strange phenomenon. 

If you ask me, music is never "finished", nor is it "owned" by any person/people. It continues being made, remixed and re-heard, like a memory of a person, spoken about in countless ways by countless different people, each having something slightly distinct to note, something to add to the concept of a human-being. Maybe one day, as Don McLean famously said, the music will die. It'll cease being heard. Spoken about. Abandoned. Forgotten. But, until that day comes, let music live. Let it breathe! Let it wander, let it ponder! Let it be hummed, whistled by people like my grandma; be resampled, reworked through album's like this. Who knows, maybe it continues Up There, after our days are over (I guess, one day we'll all find out). I, for one, hope Don McLean was mistaken: there will be no day when the music dies. Music will exist forever; a song with no fade out; infinitely growing as time moves ahead, forever and ever. Music, it survives. Music will survive!
