“Change! Our hearts demand it. Change! Our eyes demand it”, sings Kino’s Viktor Tsoi in “Peramen”. This song may now be heard on the streets of not just Minsk and Grodno, but also Babruysk, Brest, Gomel, Mogilev, Pinsk, Vitebsk and what – at least to a foreign onlooker – looks like countless Belarussian cities and towns engulfed in protest. Following years of Alexander Lukashenko’s rule, another rigged election, omnipresent violence perpetrated by the state apparatus, censorship and draconian laws, the people have taken to the streets en masse. This is not the first time the Belarusians are out to protest, but the scale of these disturbances is unprecedented. Also unprecedented is the fact the rallies are led by women, who head the peaceful marches that have spread onto the streets of Belarus. Workers, miners, teachers, employees of the media and the Minsk underground as well as artists from the Belarusian State Philharmonic have all joined the protests. They stand against lies, demand the transparency of public life, and access to power. As they rally against repression and torture, they expose themselves to the same.

The artists featured on the Peramen! compilation also demand changes. While we cannot physically join the protesters on the streets of Belarus, we want to offer them at least this form of support. Our thoughts are with our friends – and with all the people who have been arrested, beaten, and humiliated. We join in the grief of families of all those murdered in the protests.

The compilation covers a broad selection of genres: from club music, through classical and experimental classical, to noise, ambient, and rock; from pieces that were composed to ones that were improvised or inspired by folk music. Its geographical scope is similarly broad, spanning Belarus, Czechia, Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine, USA, Russia, and Hungary.

The human brain processes emotion by categorizing all input according to two responses: sympathetic and parasympathetic (i.e. “fight or flight”). Imagine a graph with two axes: one axis representing a state of stimulation (from excited to calm), the other depicting stimuli as being negative or positive.

In his book The Man Who Lied to His Laptop, the late Clifford Nass refers to these two plots respectively as “arousal” and “valence.” Whether an emotion makes us feel angry, humiliated, serene, jubilant, frightened or something else, the brain’s job is to determine what level of valence or arousal is appropriate for a given situation. Although Nass’s book doesn’t go into the Goldilocks Zone as such, the author does explore how the brain constantly resets itself chemically in an attempt to keep us “just right.”

For this weirdly industrial-sounding piece, Suss Müsik attempted to capture the polarities and nuances between valence and arousal. The main pounding riff (the “arousal” side) was created with a pitch-shifter applied to acoustic guitar. The “valence” side is an analog synth wash combined with audio scans of two-dimensional artwork. The two sides meet somewhere in the middle, thanks to some liberal digital-delay phasing and a Ditto looping pedal.

The piece, entitled Nass, was recorded live to 8-track with no overdubs. The image was created by visual artist B.G. Madden.

система | system presents "Bubny Voices" audio Installation by Ukrainian Kyiv-based artists NFNR & unwavemenot.
~ "The Bubny Voices is an artistic documentation of the Nádraží Bubny area in Prague, which is about to be destroyed .
The compositions are created by Ukrainian composers unwavemenot & NFNR out of field recordings collected around the Bubny railway station by local inhabitants.
Originally the piece was supposed to be a site-specific performance at Nádraží Bubny. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak borders were closed, thus the invited artists NFNR & unwavemenot did not have access to the city. They decided to approach Bubny through auditory impressions of the local residents.
Bubny Voices reflects the experience of new places based on imagination rather than sensations. In such a way, the artists fulfill a need for discovery in times of limited freedom of movement. They suggest using imagination in order to document places that disappear. The work means to grasp collective aural memories of Bubny to be able to experience the area after its disappearance.

Роботи мали бути створені як site-specific інсталяція у споруді вокзалу. Через спалах COVID-19 та закриті кордони запрошені музикантки NFNR & unwavemenot не мали можливості працювати з місцем особисто. Вони вирішили вивчити Бубни через акустичні досвіди місцевих жителів.
Bubny Voices є переживанням досвіду міста на основі уяви, а не відчуттів. Так музикантки задовольняють потребу у нових враженнях і відкриттях у часи обмеженої свободи пересування. У подібний спосіб, вони пропонують використовувати уяву для документації місць, що зникають. Композиції вбирають колективі акустичні спогади про район, щоб мати можливість відчути цю місцевість після її зникнення.

- Olesia Onykiienko [NFNR] and Anna Khvyl [unwavemenot] are
Kyiv-based electronic musicians, composers, and members of Women’s Sound platform. Both experiment with field recordings and site-specific works.⠀
Olesia aka NFNR is a choir conductor, theater composer, and leftfield producer. Anna aka unwavemenot has a background in classical piano, and DJ-ing, composes music for films, has interest in urban anthropology. Both work with the idea of music for non-musicians integrating listening practices into everyday life.⠀
