Non Sequituri - No. 5 - Helecopter Song

5'14" is a composition for electronic media, created in Digital Performer 5, primarily with electric guitar sounds run through granular and spectral effects. It is formally and rhetorically inspired by Charles Ives' The Unanswered Question, and also includes a quotation from the first movement of Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire, "Mondestrunken."

Originally written for four channel audio, I've recently been able to convert it, albeit crudely, into a more user-friendly stereo format.

Gagaku, composed for the electric guitar in 2007, started as an improvisation, heavily influenced by the music of Kaki King, during which I began to experiment with alternate string tunings and unconventional techniques involving multiple capos. At some point, it occurred to me that I could bend the tones of open strings from "behind" the capo, creating a koto-like effect which would become a major feature of the piece. A placid, nocturnal fusion of classical art music, instrumental pop, blues, and japanese folk music, Gagaku is named for the literal translation "elegant music" and bears little resemblance to the court music tradition of the same name.

Gagaku was performed by Gabriel Gutierrez and recorded at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music student composition recital on November 06, 2007.

Gagaku

Originally one of four pieces composed for the soundtrack to the 2008 student documentary Heartland Lifeline: History of the Hi-Dry, "Heartland Theme" was eventually omitted from the final cut after a peer review session deemed it "too depressing" to fit the overall tone of the film. 

"Heartland Theme" was performed by Yeji Cha and recorded at the Indiana University Musical Arts Center.

Trepanation, completed in 2010, was composed for a percussion duo in which each player performs on a battery of four tom-toms. Interjectory gestures are set against a backdrop of drilling 16th notes, but the texture gives way as the interjections increase in frequency and rhythmic complexity.

Trepanation was originally performed by Trevor Haining and Max Tholenaar-Maples at my composition recital on May 1st, 2010, but the recording was lost. I re-created the performance using the Native Instruments Maschine.
