Fusilier writes:  "I’m selling myself short here so whatever relationship I was taking about was never going to work. The whole song is me trying to compromise too much. I’m singing at the top of my range, I’m playing an instrument that I hate but by the end I just do what I would’ve done anyway and drop it. It was all worth it for that song though."

Doveman is 25-year old Thomas Bartlett and a select group of collaborators. Most often, the band includes banjo player Sam Amidon, a folk singer and old childhood friend; drummer Dougie Bowne, sideman to Iggy Pop, the Lounge Lizards, and Cassandra Wilson; guitarist and conjurer Shahzad Ismaily, who has previously appeared with that magical trifecta -- Marc Ribot, the Master Musicians of Joujouka, and Rage Against the Machine; and trumpeter Peter Ecklund, an expert in genres like swing and dixieland jazz. At various times there are various others. Doveman does not rehearse, but they sure can play.

In turbulent times we need audacious artists like Fusilier. His just released EP, Upstream (Brassland), features the title track about isolation plus a sinister take on Martha and the Vandellas’ “Dancing in the Street” that ﬁnds the classic twisted into a protest anthem. The Brooklyn-based vocalist and multi-instrumentalist has also released self-directed videos for both songs. [This episode features the full-version of “Upstream” in its entirety.]

Classical Classroom Ep 110: Starting From Scratch - Bryce Dessner, Aron Sanchez, & So Percussion

Alec Hanley Bemis, writer and manager of cultural projects, co-founded the Brassland record label in 2001 along with his friends Aaron and Bryce Dessner of the band The National. Over the years, the label has become home to a community of like minded creative musicians who defy category. Last month Alec published a piece in Creative Independent called 19 things I’d tell people contemplating starting a record label (after running one for 19 years). Here we discuss what happened in between.&nbsp; Although this conversation was recorded in the before times of 2019, listening back I am struck by a few particularly interesting ideas that emerge in the talk: the distinction between culture and subculture; that we are now in an era of “constant content”; the shift over time from the taste maker as an institution to the taste maker as an individual personality; and what he describes as “the economy of cool”.    www.brassland.org
