Disquiet Junto Project 0484: A Movable Heart

Disquiet Junto Project 0482: Exactly That Gap. The Assignment: Make a musical haiku following instructions from Marcus Fischer.

I started with planning a formal 5-7-5 haiku grid. Then I searched for appropriate samples. As (mostly) all my samples represent memories, it was intended as a haiku on particular meta moments of (my) life. Syllables should consist of up to two parallel sounds. Breathing was part of the concept. 

The first result where nice to have but I somehow missed universal significance. Reading some thoughts on haikus and that meaning is not a necessary ingredient reassured me somewhat. I rebuild it anyway and spent a lot of time with the the back and forth of the breathing positions. Now I'm happy with it's deeper meaning (which is optional to perceive) and I love the gap.

The Bells Of Tent City(disquiet0484)

I used a light effects chain to create a little more space for the chimes to live in, and coupled that with a recording from the open window of my studio.  The effects chain was designed to complement the sounds of my neighborhood.

Canal & Cassette Chimes (disquiet0484)

Recorded for Disquiet Junto 0484

I played the recording through a delay pedal and a reverb pedal, through my guitar amp, and recorded it from the other side of the room. I took that recording and put it through a granular synthesizer to create two additional layers, and fed those through more reverb.

Unmarshalled [disquiet0484]

Using A Movable Heart for this week's disquiet project, I decided to play it through the bluetooth Jam speaker you see before you while I was prepping my lunch in the kitchen.  The whole point of is so that these wind chimes could journey all over the world.  Windchimes are always in the background of our lives so I thought it appropriate play the track and record it while I was making lunch. Remnants of said lunch are in the picture.  The windchime track really freaked out Lorraine, so I'm glad I got this to work in basically one take.

The Assignment: Remix the pure sounds of Chris Kallmyer’s traveling wind chimes to your own musical purposes.

-Used the first 3 minutes of the original, unedited
-Converted that audio to midi and triggered a crystal chamber bowls sampler.
-Added 3 wind chimes I own (build by my father in the 80's out of aluminium tubes)
-Improvised an acoustic piano part
-Improvised a synth pad

Strange Weather - disquiet0485

Disquiet Junto Project 0485: Remix the pure sounds of Chris Kallmyer’s traveling wind chimes to your own musical purposes.

As I had already been working on wind chimes tracks (https://krakenkraft.bandcamp.com/album/sein-rausch), I simple replaced my own samples with Chris' in different granular production environments, mostly Nebulae in modular and Samplr on iPad, and I changed what felt wrong.

This is a recut/remix of around seven sessions, first versions were, as always, way too long, so this is the chart edit. I tried some percussion, but it didn't work for me, maybe because there is already a rhythmic component present. 

By whatsoever reason I wanted to use no other sound sources sources besides Chris Kallmyer’s "Two hearts are better than one" recording. His original is in the beginning and the end. Thanks to Chris for the opportunity!

what a great piece of audio! Love the spaciousness. I "remixed" it using some ChucK code that pans 16 copies across the stereo spectrum, each slightly slower than the one to its left:

this creates a slightly bizarre flanging-echoing-pitch shifting perceptual warp that I like. I created to code to work with a poem read by a friend of mine (hence the name). It works really well on short loops too.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
