This started with the title, which I thought sounded clever. Of course I have no idea what love is ‘meant to be’… but all these songs are more concerned with the questions than the answers…

‘I have often wondered if love’s not about monogamy’ was kind of the starting point for this song… it is actually something I have wondered about a lot.. isn’t love so much more? Our society's obsession is with only one kind of love - romantic love, and the idolisation of it, and the damaging and misleading deluded representation of even that kind of love seems to obscure any other potentially greater perspective. What if by only focusing on, and being obsessed with a entirely ‘false’ and imaginary version of love - I am denying myself an understanding of something infinitely richer and more rewarding, something that could serve the world so much much better … an understanding of ‘Love Like Love Is Meant To be’?

The Only Necessary Thing

Brave New Broken Hearts Club is the vehicle for north London born songwriter and producer Neil Phillimore.  Neil’s writing and producing skills for many years were put to use running a not-for-profit organisation, songwriting and recording for the wellbeing and mentoring of youth. The origins of his own creative project were simply the exercising of that same power of creativity for the sake of wellbeing in his own life, when confronted with the disappointment of having to stop the popular one-to-one sessions due to lack of funding.

 A sniffter of Billy Bragg’s London vocal styling; the tiniest pinch of Damon Albarn’s lower register; a dash of Richard Hawley croon; a glug of classic songwriting aesthetic and you’re in the ballpark - sometimes erring more towards the acoustic styling of a Nick Mulvey Type and sometimes more towards the indie pop/rock of guitar acts like Inhaler or Sam Fender. Brave New Broken Hearts Club songs are lyrically intelligent, emotionally rich; hopeful, warm and heartfelt.

After the release of Not What We Call Love in 2021 Brave New Broken Hearts Club set about a national house-gig tour taking in homes across the UK from Harlow to Sheffield via Wales. April 2022 saw the reprise of this intimate and personal approach to touring with a further ten date tour capped off finally with 2 beautifully intimate headlining shows  in the beautiful upstairs room of Islington’s finest public house- The Hemmingford Arms.

2022 brought with it four singles  A Little Piece Of Me , All I Have is Now, Higher and Beauty

February of 2023 saw his biggest gigs to date in two beautiful ancient old church buildings in South Wales and Wiltshire. The month ended with an intimate show back up in Sheffield where he and close friend  Peckham folk singer Pearl Fish sold out the renown acoustic venue Cafe#9.

Brave New Broken Hearts Club lyrics are thoughtful and smart, and extend the usual lexicon of the modern songwriter elegantly and unselfconsciously - they are quite unique. That uniqueness extends to his vocal style too, provoking music blog European Indie Music Network to comment ‘An obviously English voice, genuinely like no other artist you've ever heard.’ 

Despite largely drawing on lessons learned in dark times Brave New broken Hearts Club’s songs are stridently and unabashedly hopeful. Often simple production, leaves room for  the intelligent lyrics and for the now familiar authenticity and vulnerability of a Brave New Broken Hearts Club vocal.
